lucid dreaming...

Postby Tenshi no Ai » Tue Jan 30, 2007 10:47 am

Well, after thinking about some dreams I've had lately, I've come to realize that there's almost a variety of lucid dreaming.

When I first started out doing it, I thought it was SUCH an uncommon thing to be able to do, but was proved wrong as I talked to different friends. The first time I was able to, I had COMPLETE control over dreams. It was amusing because ever since I was little before I was able to, I would always randomly ask people in dreams "is this a dream?" Eventually I realized it was, and took it for granted by trying to do stupid things "just because it's ONLY a dream". Amusing how in one dream, I could actually feel my eyes open in real life verrry slowly, while my "dream eyes" were wide open, and I forced my eyes to shut again and stay in the dream, just cause I could. Of course, the pressure was too much to handle and I eventually woke up soon after. Long story with all the happenings that went on, but eventually I wasn't able to do it anymore, as if my "privilege" in the ability was taken away, due to my stupidity on doing all the stuff :/ I was able to do it a couple random times after, but that was about it.

Now, it's as if I "control" my dreams, but half the time it's not really me doing it, it's "me" (aka my unconscious dreaming mind). It's actually even more bizzare I find, because it's as if I'm dreaming regularily, in which I can't control, but instead I'm turning the dream into some sort of story, manipulating what happens and so on. Sometimes I'll just make it up and "imagine" it happen, where it really doesn't, or "ask" for people to appear in which there are "there" but like, invisable :/ It's really werid^^ My dream from last night though, was somewhere in between the 2 lucid "types" I mentioned. I had some sense of control, but it was mostly just a regular dream, but coming to the end of it, I didn't like it and was tired of the slight freakyness of the dream and thought "Ok, enough of this, I'm waking up..." and forced myself to wake up, which took a bit, because I think I was sleeping with my eyes partially open or something, cause an image in the dream slowly distorted into my curtains, and took a bit to focus and realize what they were, and that I was awake. Done that a couple times too, where I wanted out of a dream and forced myself to wake up.

*whew* Those were some overly large paragraphs there^^ Guess I had alot to type about... But anyways, for all the other lucid dreamers out there, how is it like you guys? Guess I'm curious as to how everyone else condiders themselves to be lucid, and their own experiences and all.

I've never had dreams like this before, but I have heard of them *waits for Ryan to post in this thread*. XD They sound pretty interesting, though! XD

If dreams are meant to help sort your memories and things of that sort, I couldn't think tha lucid dreaming (although fun) would be a good idea. But, there's a lot about dreaming we don't understand.

The one thing I really like, is how it (and dreams too, sometimes) can really bring out my imagination. I've gotten SO many ideas for new story ideas and stuff, to create and write one day from my dreams. And, I think it's interesting that if I'm successful at creating a story WHILE being completely aware with what I'm doing (and hopefully the characters and scenes etc would be there and not just invisable :/), that I could actually pull off actually being able to picture these stories, visually... I think that would be pretty neat^^ Like directing your own story... or something^^ But I just really enjoy how that sort of thing can really spark my imagination on new story ideas...

I've never had a lucid dream that I can remember. I mean, usually while I'm dreaming, I know that it's a dream, but I don't have any control over what I do. It's more like watching a movie.

As soon as I realize I'm dreaming, I wake up, because I don't like dreaming in general. If they're good dreams I'm bummed when I wake up, and if they're not good dreams, then they're obviously not a pleasant experience. Fortunately I dream fairly little, at least it seems so - I don't have much of a frame of reference to compare the frequency with which I dream to other people.

There was a period in my life during which my sleep was wrought with nightmares that usually started out innocently, but always worked their way up to being of the blood curdling variety of macabre. This was not a good time, and I feared sleep very much.
One night, I had a mild dream in which, rather than being unable to writhe or scream, I could move about and make decisions. The dream did work its way up to horrific, but I sensed the shift and was able to wake myself up. After that, I was always able to wake myself when a dream "shifted."

I'm completely the opposite: I EXTREMELY rarely don't dream... (those are those nights when I'm SO tired I don't even wake up once, which I usually do, and then roll over and go back to sleep) and 90% I remember them too (and quite well). So for me, it's just too werid when I hear about people that don't dream alot nor even remember them...

I've had lucid dreams before. I doubt it'll ever happen again, but I was able to go for the sweetest roller coaster ride ever!

I never have sleep paralysis anymore. I stopped having nightmares or getting scared of anything ever after becoming a Resident Evil/Silent Hill fan.

I'm wierd like that.

I'm the same. But Photosoph has very vivid dreams, and sometimes has lucid dreams as well.

Of the few dreams I can remember (2 or 3), most happened when I was younger or were nightmares. Still, it would be nice to be aware of what was happening in my dreams and to manipulate it.

See that's what I'd love to be able to do. I'd love to do that so that I could get a good idea of how to tell stories and animate movement better. ^^

Actually, I read that everyone dreams anywhere from 3-6 dreams per night, but some people have trouble remembering even a single one when they wake up. Everyone dreams because when sleeping for extended periods of time, one enters REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, during which dreams occur.

As for me, I almost always remember at least one of my dreams, but instead of separate, individual dreams, mine seem to just fuse together into one ginormous, epic, story-like dream. Like Tenshi no Ai, I also get tons of writing ideas from them! My subconscious gives me the best ideas. It's awesome! In fact, a series I've been working on for 3 years now began with a dream I had, which I based the original plot on.

Lucid dreams are great. I don't have them too terribly often, but when I do realize that I'm dreaming and am therefore in control of what happens therein, it's usually in a nightmare. I get out of the scary dream by closing my eyes and screaming as loud as I can (in the dream). This never fails to wake me up. It certainly comes in handy.

The simplest way that I can understand therapy is that we're born a certain way, we're taught to be something different, and we spend our whole lives trying to unravel it and ultimately align ourselves with who we really are. Life, experiences, traumas -- whatever -- they all add up to make you some altered version of what you are. So there's this battle that goes on between what you are and what you become, and it's been very important for me to unravel what I was taught to be or what I became. and to draw a direct parallel to music -- the closer I get back to being who I really am, the stronger the music gets..." --Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins frontman)

Sometimes when I fall asleep in school or on my stomach, I tend to fall into a Sleep Paralysis. They're amazing and fun. I'm fully conscious yet my body is shut down, and I'm autonomicly breathing yet I can fully hear (Happened once during another student's presentation in class. I could hear him talk and I can understand what he was saying) and sometimes if my eyes are slightly open, I can see through them.

Sometimes if I can get myself up with full-force. Other times I just go back into my altered state of consciousness.

Oh so that's what you mean by sleep paralysis... I once heard a story from my psy prof saying that his daughter would wake up, but couldn't move! Sounded kinda freaky, but that's sort of how I thought of "sleep paralysis" from then on.

But in your definition of it, I totally do it and it's odd :/ At school I could hear everything but I'm like, out^^ And usually I "dream" but not exactly a dream, since I wouldn't be in REM sleep yet. *shrugs* So not sure what those would even be concidered (but they were usually relevant to what my teacher was talking about). Surprisingly, if he said "turn to page ___" or "OK, (aka que to write a note down)" I would wake up in the snap of a finger and write down the notes. THAT I thought was odd too, but then again sometimes, I'm able to force-wake myself up to look at the clock. At camp, I remember my friend and I had only an hour to nap, so every 10 mins or so, I'd somehow open my eyes to check on the clock, go back to sleep, remember to check, and wake up. Very odd stuff^^ Dunno if I could do that again though... Oh, and lastly, I was soooooo tired when I went to see Dead Man's Chest in theatres due to lack of sleep that night, so I kept drifting off and missed ALOT of the movie, but I heard the entire thing (although my brain never really interpreted what they were saying, but I still heard noise). Definately werid renting the movie and being all like "ooooh! So THAT'S what happened!"

Yeah, lucid dreams are just one odd thing in the world of sleep and dreaming :/

Heh, I've had one, but only one i can really remember. I was playing in the band at a football game, and one of my friends was there, and i realized it to be a dream, so me and my friend went out and messed with all the football players in the middle of the game. it was pretty coolio
