Modesty Survey

Talk about anything in here.

Postby mitsuki lover » Mon Jan 22, 2007 11:21 am

Modesty should be based on commonsense approach to dressing. You can really overdo it either way if you don't use the sense that God gave you.
Wheter or not something is a stumbling block shouldn't be an issue, the issue is wheter or not you're dressing in a commonsensical manner.

Eirewolf, after having taken a good portion of the test I can conclude that they did NOT include those questions to have a few extreme opinions...

most of the questions are that way.

The Bible says on two separate occasions not to be a stumbling block, once in Romans 14 and again in 1 Corinthians 10.

There is a point where if a girl wears something and a guy still lusts for her, it isn't her fault. Still, a girl should do all within her power to make sure she isn't encouraging those types of thoughts.

So being a stumbling block is an issue.

In a primarily traditional muslim country, for the christian women to wear, say, most American clothing would probably be immodest. In many south American and African tribes, there's really nothing wrong with the women there (as well as the men) going nearly naked. It's not like they're trying to use their bare skin to entice someone... So, it is very culturally specific...

Of course, in the US, I think staying, say, a notch or two above the acceptable limit in the secular world is a good bet.

It really depends how you are raised, where you are raised, and how you are conditioned in what is taboo or not in society.

Two things it seems like a lot a people have missed:

First - the questions were not written by one or more writers of the survey they were submitted by many girls from all over. If these questions have shown up it seems that some girls are thinking about it. If it's not a big issue for you say so - the survey isn't 'suggesting' anything, it's just giving a chance for you to give answers.

Second - The survey would be overly simplistic if it were simply the bubble clicking - that's why there's a comments box. Please make use it. I think it would be a little hypocritical to take the whole test and complain about it's limited usefulness and how you would have rather had a chance to explain something, and yet not make use of the comments. Don't just super-click through the whole thing like one of those 'Which Colour Am I?' surveys. :)

Oh, I commented on many of them, but the survey took like three hours to complete.

Well, some guys ARE into that...

Sorry, the issue of modesty in clothing is one I don't quite get... I do know I have a difficult time around summer... I spent a year in a mission group in northern california... Bikinis don't really exist at YWAM Chico. It is CULTURE SHOCK to come back to civilization.

I probably wouldn't do well in one of those south american villages, though I'm sure if that's where I was supposed to go, I'd get over it.

Mascara...as a stumbling block? I'm sorry, but the only thing that mascara has ever done is bring out one of the greatest inventions of God, and that's the female eye. You will be hard-pressed to find anything more awe-inspiring than a girl's eyes even as they just glance at you. To me, it's less of a sexual thing and more of a poetic thing.

My two cents.

EDIT: Takes a bazillion year for me to load each question. Boo.

Mascara is the opposite of a stumbling block for me. I usually have no interest in girls who wear (much) makeup. If I can see that you look quite a bit different at the time you get out of the shower/wake up, it says to me you're not comfortable with your appearance and/or want to impress others physically, both things that are a big turnoff to me.

I don't like lots of makeup on girls, but just a little to highlight naturally, or just keep it natural. It isn't bad unless it's used to cover up everything you are.

I knew a pastor one time who said, "Even an old barn needs a new coat of paint sometimes." I don't remember if he was ever married.

"Is watching a girl put on lip-gloss a stumbling block?"

"High-heeled shoes cause girls to walk in a suggestive way."

"Anklets draw too much attention to the legs."

These questions are bizzare.

Hmmm...alot of it is a lil' too extreme, in my humble opinion. I mean, I dress the most modest, even outta the gals at church, not kiddin' ^^;, and it made it sound like I'm not modest O__o

But I do agree that gals have a responsibility to dress appropriately. It shows respect to God, and to guys and gals (Uhh, even gals can find someone immodest distractin', just 'cause 'tis hard not to look o.O 'Specially if gals are trapped in that comparin'-themself-to-every-gal kinda game) But also, it shows that you value YOURSELF. You don't have to sell out to be beautiful and loved and all that jazz. It shows that you have a heart, soul, and mind...not just a body. That you are a gal with her head on her shoulders.

'Course, guys have a reponsibility as well. They CAN choose not to stare. And they can ask God for help, so that they don't linger on certain thoughts. Soooo, yeah :)

While not explicitly a "modesty" thing, I believe you have hit on a point here that deserves recognition. I hadn't ever considered that one, but it makes a certain deal of sense.
