heres my story.

i got up and opened the refrigerator and started pulling out the contents i needed in order to make a sandwhich.
my mom asked me: what are you doing?
me: i'm making a sandwhich.

but the interesting part of it was that i didnt say SANDWHICH.... i said it more like SAMwhich.

and then i started realizing everything else i say weird. i dont pronounce things right!

does anyone else around here have the same problem or am i just an odd child?

I say 'salmon' as 'samon' (which it's apparently suppose to be), yet everyone else I know seems to say 'salmon.' Of course, it's typically more to do with where you live (yay for accents and mispronounciations!).

I've NEVER heard it as "sal-mon". That just sounds like... werid :/ And man, if someone were to say that in my town, I can see people pointing fingers and blurting out the word "foreigner!" (We're apparently the "Salmon Capital of the World", although not so much anymore :/)

I've heard someone say Potomac as "Pah-tah-mahk," but we say it, "Puh-toh-muk," with the emphasis on toh.

I say pumpkin "pumkin." Does that count? I also say omnipotent as "am-nee-poh-tent" instead of really fast, as one word.

That's weird.... I've never heard of woooooter. I say 'worta'.

For castle some say 'cassel' (which is weird), but I say more like 'carsul'.

Would = wood and salmon = sammon is right. Oh yeah, and 'sanwich'.

Another one is probably. I mostly say 'probly', but sometimes say the full 'probably'.

Water (wa-ter) generally becomes "war-ter" where I live. I say wa-ter. XD

I have a teacher that pronounces the word "scepter (sep-ter)" as "skep-ter". Yes. He pronounces the c as a hard c. He also says MAC-beth, rather than macBETH.

I had a tour guide in Washington DC once who pronounced "WAHSH-ing-ton" as "WOOSH-ing-ton". I've also heard people pronounce it "WAHRSH-ing-ton".

I used to have a teacher that pronounced the word "cookies" weird. XD It's not something I can explain through the internet, but it was funny. XD

And good grief, I don't know HOW to pronounce the word economics and its branches. XD Ee-CON-o-my, eh-con-AH-mics, ee-con-AH-mics, ee-CON-o-mist...it's so confusing, especially since everyone in my Econ. class says it differently. XD

It is not wrong. XD I say "you all" or "you guys" most of the time, and I live in the south. XD Then again, I always say I'm southern by location only...XD

My friend used to always have "pillow" sound like "pallow". His brother also shortened the way of saying "room" into it sounding like "rum". Like "bed rum" "living rum" and so forth. Sounds pretty soutern now that I think about it^^

Oh here's another thign that I was thinking about just last night: PIZZA! How do you guys pronounce it? I've like ALWAYS called it "peet-za" cause a straight "pizza" just sounds wrong, or that it's supposed to be a leaning tower or something^^

I've always said "peet-za", and so has everyone else I know. XD "Piza" would just sound...weird. o_o

"Cooperation" and "corporation" are actually two different words. Cooperation (ko-ahp-er-a-shun) means "working together to achieve a goal". A corporation (kor-por-a-shun) is like a big company (sort of). Sorry if that confused you more, but I hope I at least helped with the pronunciation. XD

Well, apparently I couldn't pronounce the "sh" sound until I was 8... even now, I sometimes have to think about it, otherwise it comes out as "s." But that's really a speech impediment, not a pronounciation...

For me the word "draw" comes out as "drawl" a lot. When I was little, "saw" would be "sawl" and "crayon" would be "crown"--which is why I ended up calling them "crayolas." The word that really gets me, though, is "yacht." I pronounce it "ya-cht." I mean, why's a "ch" in there if it's silent?

Heh. I can remember I once talked to an on-line friend who lives in Kentucky (though I'm not sure he was born there) on the phone. He's a big fan of classic literature and has a degree in philosophy. At one time though his prononciations caused a communication gap though; it went something like this.

Him: "Say, what do you think of Gurter? I really love his works."
Me: "Hmmm, I don't believe I know him."
Him: "He's quite a famous author. Are you sure you haven't heard of him?"
Me: "I'm pretty sure I did not. What's the name again?"
Him: "Gurter."
Me: "What did he write?"
Him: "His most famous piece is Faust.
Me: "Oh, you mean Goethe!"
Him: "Yes. Oh dear, did I put an R where it shouldn't be?"

XD I'm from Wyoming and go to school in Montana, so I hear a lot of rural/hick pronunciations:
Creek - 'creak' is proper, but many people insist on 'crick' the debate can get quite violent in the right company
Roof - I've heard this pronounced 'ruff'
Wash - heard people say 'warsh'

Some of my profs commit pretty funny mispronunciations:
Elongate - proper is 'ee-long-gate' ... my prof says 'ee-long-ga-gate' It took a few classes of people giggling every time he said elongagate for him to realize something was wrong.

Clerestory - proper is 'clear-story' ... my history prof who is an archeologist and not up on her architecture terms says this like it's spelled 'clera-story' The poor girl had a lot of pronunciation problems in general.

My family and I also have a long-running fight over how to pronounce 'Italian'. They all say 'ih-talian' but I say 'eye-talian'.

I usually say sandwich as 'san-wich.'

I spoke competitively for three years, so I am very conscious of my pronunciation. I pronounce words properly unless my hick accent kicks in.
