Getting an A in class is different than actually learning something for intrinsic value.

Have to strongly disagree there, MSP. No one cares if you 'learned' anything in the real world. You either succeed or fail. Do or do not there is no try.

Of course nobody cares. But it's not a matter about having others care. Hence why it's of intrinsic value. Value for the self. Doing things intrinsically is better than doing things extrinsically. It's self-actualization and awareness. And I find these things much more important than many other things.

Peter: Is the Count a vampire?

Brian: What's that?

Peter: He's got those big fangs. Have they ever shown him doing somebody in and then feeding on him?

Brian: You're, you're asking if they've ever done a Sesame Street in which the Count kills somebody and then sucks their blood for sustenance.

Peter: Yeah.

Brian: No, they've never done that.

The only subject I'm bad at is math, which because I'm nice and polite to my teachers unlike most teens who are enable to hold conversations for more than 10 seconds, they pass me anyway. I've had teachers just show me the answer book and tell me to just write something there and magically get a good grade. It's not underhanded, that's life skills that will serve you in business later on. Very Dale Carnegie. XD Then of course there's online solvers.

I don't know what grade you are in, or what kind of classes you take, but there comes a point when straight As aren't as meaningful in high school. If you take easy, cop-out subjects, then straight As mean nothing. If you take more than 5 difficult college level courses, along with a multitude of extracurricular activities and miscellaneous obligations, and still get straight As, then I bow humbly to you. You're doing better than I am.

I'm sorry if I sound agitated, but I value what I have learned in high school. It may have not been paradise, but I learned because I chose to make something of my experience and I never let anyone ruin it for me.

As for the assignment, if you truly were looking for exaggerated lies, then this should have been in the Goof Off. I'm not sure if this assignment was already completed, but I suggest you get a bunch of your friends and have them listen to you, or go to your youth group at church, who I'm sure would be more than supportive.

Wow alot of people got really upset about this...I think this was more just to get her feelings out about the subject then to actually decieve her teacher.

and you are doing the assignment right USSR?

Also I hafta agree straight A's mean almost nothing... I Have a mix of A's an B's but I also am taking Honours and/or college courses.

And I have A's in all my science and math classes which is most important for college!

Also.. I love school.. I love it soooooo MUCH!

I dunno why everyone says you dont learn anything in school.. I revel in the learning I do at my school...

here are some of the things I remember learning-

DNA mapping - This was SOO much fun!

DNA in general- I love DNA its soo cool!

Factoring- FUN and easy!

all the stuff they make you read in school- I love to read so I love assignements where we read!

Art- My art teacher teaches about manga and other contemporary art forms!

Theres a bunch of other stuff to.... I just love learning and high school in general... except for getting up early... and homework! but thats just life...

cant believe so many people have such a low opinion of school!

MSP, I value manipulation and cheating. :) Just wait... I'll be your governor one day when I get into politics.

Puguni, as a matter of fact I could have graduated a year early if I had wanted to. Don't mean to sound braggy, but your comments were a bit incredulous. Taken courses out of my community college, used to have a 50 credit load per semester (dunno how other schools operate, but mine is about 30 credits minimum), and just called up my local animal shelter to volunteer last Friday XD (Really, I did. But that's another story...) Honestly... I find school in general to be useless. Your education pretty much starts at college. I am half serious about the assignment though. I nearly died when I saw that E-mail. O.O

Vernhal - Yeah I'm gonna do it for the simple reason that doing it requires less effort than working around it. Not always the case. But here it is. And why do you think it is that straight A's are so easy to attain? Because education standards have gone down the crapper. Don't worry, I don't "hate" school. I've never been interested enough to hate much of anything.

...Back on topic.........
OoOoh. That Counte dude is from Sesame Street? XD Sorry, I had no clue what you were talking about. I never watched it all that much as a kid. I only liked the Snuffalupaguss... O.O

Yah your probably right... I got really lucky... the school I go to is.. I dunno how to put it... its "more advanced" then the other schools in the area... and can only guess more advanced then schools in general.

My friend from middle school started homeschooling when he couldnt go to my school because the quality of education is so much lower at the schools around me.

its also really cool beacuse thyere trying to be more modern esque and stuff so we have photoshop on all the computer and are are library has a
huge manga and visual novel section along with a bunch of other cool stuff I dun really care about but is still cool.

What I think a lot of you are forgetting is that you wouldn't BE in college unless you had been through elementary school, middle school, and high school first. Without an education, you couldn't GET to college. The basics come before the rest of life--just like my math teacher says on an almost-daily basis: "Math builds." As does everything else in life and what you learn.

Well okay. You could have simply disagreed with me. But laughing at my face? That's kind of rude.

And I did not say it was a definite measure of what one's future would be. Here's an example: Let's say you want to grow up into the field of biochemistry. So would you simply start majoring in that field? Not knowing anything about it? Of course not. You would take a High school chemistry and/or biology class (Required by most schools by the way) so you could know what it's like.

Take me for example. Before my senior year, I knew only a little on psychology, yet I wanted to grow up and be a clinical psychologist. Now that I am in a psychology class, I am second-guessing. Do I still want to be a clinical psychologist? Not anymore.

I never said your decision would be definite in High school, but it's certainly a driving factor into deciding what you want to do after High school.

They may be easy for you to attain in the place in which you live, because maybe your local education system stinks. Maybe a community college course in your area counts for one honors/pre-AP course in mine, because apparently, you've had a bad experience with the education in your county. I mean, really, it's still a community college.

Every state has its own educational system. Maybe the grading scale is easier in your area. Some places have 90-100 as an A. If I lived there, I'd get straight As all the time! But as it is, an A here is only 94-100.

Unless you've lived in every state in America and know how every single education system is run in them, don't think that you know it all. Just because your system seems to royally suck doesn't mean that others do.

Considering that some ppl on this planet don't even get the chance to be educated, I'm thankful that my high school experience was good enough in helping me to get the basic skills right so that I can handle the advanced and more critical thinking stuff in college. Btw, I'm referring more to the Asian education system.

In the spirit of offtopicness (woohoo!), I'd like to add that high school guided me a little towards my final major by pushing me towards the science area. But of course, the final decision is made at college.

Dude, MSP... the guy was using smilies... don't take it so personally!

And uh... Puguni? I'm pretty sure that's same for most all U.S. states. A 90 is an A- a 94 is an A, a perfect 100 is an A+. Come oooon... just don't wanna admit that someone who regards school as no more than an amusing time to one-up other students and chat, *IS* actually doing better than many students who squeeze their brains out in stress over taking it so seriously.

Also, I fully agree it should not be taken for granted. As it is, that's just what school is being taken as. It's been P.C.-ed to the lowest common denominator. Kids don't learn anything anymore except how to be tolerant of everyone and everything and to go worship a tree on earth day. My school is surprisingly good... part homeschool, part on-campus, private school thingy... teachers are awesome and informal. Which is good for me, because I refuse to call anyone 'Mr.' 'Mrs.' as if your their my demi-godlike superior.

Anywho... PM me if ya wanna debate more.

*Shuts her debate pulse off*

Nope, our grading scale was as follows:

100-94: A
93-88: B
87-81: C
80-75: D
74 and below: F

Though I have heard of what you're talking about, where an A is from 100-90, and a B is from 89-80. But just so you know it isn't the same everywhere.
I refuse to call anyone 'Mr.' 'Mrs.' as if your their my demi-godlike superior.

I'd say it's less that and more of a matter of respect for those older than yourself, which the Bible does promote. I never call anyone older than myself by their first name unless they give me permission to do so. Well, within reason, I'm not going to call someone that's 28 "Mr. So-and-so." XD

Nope, mine's

100-93--A
92-85--B
84-78--C
77-70--D
69 and below--F

Guys, calm down. I'm sure that she knows that Mr./Mrs. are respect words. All she's saying is that an environment where the teachers allow themselves to become more personal with their students is a good environment for her. I know one of my teachers wanted allows himself to be called by his first name sometimes b/c he's been around the school awhile as a coach and alot of the students know him by that. In class, though, he asks us to call him Mr. Heath cause the school administration asked him to...

in responce to what people are saying about grades. you people know that many college prof.'s use a bell curve right? once your in college, the idea of always having a set grading ruberic is strait out the window. and about the differances in grading scales, WERE TALKING ABOUT A 4% DIFFERANCE!! If you can't get an A because of only a 4% change in the scale, then.... I'll just stop here.

and about "respecting your elders". God made the commandments for man, not the other way around. while I will show a professor a proper respect, I have no problem calling them by their first name if they are fine with it. by all means, the BEST teachers I've ever had kept things on a first name basis. you know why? because they can EARN my respect without "pulling rank". its just like the military, while it is expected for a subordinate to obey the orders of a superior officer, a TRUE officer (and leader) should be able to command that respect without the assumed authority. see, I'm picky about my teachers. If they are only there to pick up a paycheck from the school district, then I'm only there to obtain a degree from them also. and so, there is no learning environment. seriously, for those of you in high school, an education may be a privilage, but that doesn't mean that you can settle for a second rate teacher when you could get a first rate one for a little more work. When your in college YOU ARE PAYING THEM TO TEACH YOU!! which means that you are paying for a service from them. they should work just as hard as you do if they want to keep their job.

4% Can mean a lot. I failed my pre-calc exam by 2%. If I had gotten 2% more I could have passed.

Anyway, just because a teacher does not let you call them by their first name does not necessarily mean they are not willing to develop a more closer bond between teacher and student. My friend Pat is tight with my Junior english teacher: Mr. McMullen (And he is also the best english teacher I ever had). He does not want to be called "Paul" by his students, because that makes it seem like he's a close friend with his students.

Now if he asked them to call him Paul, then that's different. But since I too respect this man (And all my teachers) I will address him by what he should be addressed.

Most teachers I've had in my four years in high school were the best teachers I've ever had. They want to teach, they want you to learn, and they will help you. The will make jokes with you or share a dvd or something. But I will always address them by Mister or Miss(es), since they are my elder.

see now, that's ok. I didn't say that they HAD to go by first names. I've just had better experiances with those that do. See, those teachers are the ones that are worth fighting to have. It's the ones who do almost nothing to teach and expect grandios results. I remember I had a topics of algebra teacher who demanded absolute respect but said things like.. "its not MY job to re-teach things that your previous teachers have failed to teach you. you'll just have to go back and retake those subjects." she said this the first day of class without anyone asking anything that would prompt it. the next day, I dropped her class and picked up the same class with another teacher. I got an A in it and most of the people who stayed in the other class failed. HAVING A GREAT TEACHER IS SOOOO IMPORTANT. a good student doesn't just show up to class and expect an A without working a little. so neither should a good teacher.

I agree that respect should never be demanded; however, you have to admit there are people in this world that would never give anyone respect no matter how cool they were.

I was in the Navy for six years. Engineering is a very close-knit department, full of people who really are good friends. I also cranked up in the wardroom, and knew a lot of the officers really well.

But no matter how cool I was with officers, or even the CO, it would not be my place as an E-4 to walk into the Captain's Cabin and go, "Hey skip, what's up?" There are certain levels of familiarity that cannot, SHOULD not be given in situations of authority. Are teachers and students one of those situations? Well, no, not really. But still, first name basis and being able to goof off with a superior is a privilege, NOT a right, and I think that's part of the problem. People think it's their God-given right to be able to be close friends with superiors, and I'm sorry to say that's not true.

Even God, the greatest Superior there is, demands we respect Him. We can call Him Father, and we are close to Him, but He is still our God and Master, and we bow to Him, and we are His servants. See what I mean?

I'm the opposite of you, Hakaii, I would actually be very reluctant to be in a class with a teacher who asked us to call him by his first name and acted like our buddies. That would imply to me he doesn't take his job seriously. He's a professional, he should act like one, he should be addressed properly, and he should be approachable and friendly...but he is still a superior.
"its not MY job to re-teach things that your previous teachers have failed to teach you. you'll just have to go back and retake those subjects."

You know what? She's right. It ISN'T her job. If she's a calculus teacher, she shouldn't have to teach people basic algebra. They should already know it. If they don't, they shouldn't be in a calculus class. It's as simple as that. Now, I admit that for her to say it in a nasty tone and without any prompting, was probably a bit harsh. But she is completely right, that it is not her job to teach things the student should already know.

Now, is every student going to remember every single thing from previous classes? No, of course not, and a teacher should always be willing to give short refresher lessons, i.e. "Okay, you may not have messed with logarithms for a while, so in case you forgot..." But they should not be forced to reteach logarithms completely. That's what tutors are for. Trying to go over subjects that should already be known merely slow the rest of the class down, and slow down the lesson plan for the year.

I do agree that re-taching an older class isn't her job. but she was saying that giving a quick 1 minute explanation as to the vocabulary she was using. and that is what she was saying she wouldn't do. She would not even give a reminder as to anything that she wasn't required to teach. a student that day asked what the differance between natural numbers and whole numbers was and she made a snide remark that questioned his intelligence. now, this teachers case is a bit of a rareity. but it does happen, and all I'm saying is that both the student and the teacher should walk into the class with respect for one another and as soon as that respect is taken away, then the learning process deteriorates (ouch! I just know I probably misspelled that one, meh, no time to open up Microsoft Word)

Hakaii, please don't let things like "lack of time" be an excuse for typos or bad grammar. If you want, download the Firefox 2.0 Browser. It includes a built-in spell checker.

Anyway, I figured something else out today. History class. I thought about how important it is, and I came to the conclusion that it is quite important. You know the saying "Learn about the past to protect the future"? This pretty much applies.

American Government class is also important. I think that an unbiased approach towards learning about how the American Government system works is indeed important.

My second semester started yesterday, and now that I am in an Economics class. And I can see that this class is immensely beneficial and practical. Learning about the economy, stock exchange, and investments is something I cannot see "unworthwile to learn".
