Mysterious Samurai Saves Police

Sword-Wielding Do-Gooder
Updated: 15:11, Thursday January 11, 2007

Police are trying to trace a mysterious samurai sword-wielding vigilante who came to the rescue of two officers when they were being attacked by an armed gang.

The officers had been set upon after they tried to disrupt a burglary at a flat in Laygate, South Shields.

A group of men had knocked on the door pretending to be policemen before forcing their way in to ransack the place.

The passing plain-clothes officers were alerted when a woman inside started screaming, and went to help.

However, they were outnumbered, and the criminals were armed with a hammer, knives and a metal chain.

One of them lunged at a policeman with his knife - but just as he did so, a mysterious do-gooder appeared from nowhere and attacked him with a samurai sword.

One of the burglars ran off, but was stopped by the stranger, who hit him on the arm with the sword.

He was arrested, along with another man from the flat, but in true superhero fashion the samurai man disappeared before police could speak to him.

A third man was arrested later. Two men are still being hunted.

Police are particularly keen to trace the man with the sword who came to the aid of their officers, and appealed for anyone with information to call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Cool cool! But as i said somewhere else in relation to this very article, vigilantism is frowned upon by authorities the person would probably get arrested or something, or at least get a stern warning.

Still, the idea of a real-life superhero is scary, until real life supervillains start popping up, that is. :D

Neat. Only a matter of time before Katanas are among standard police-issued equipment. Heck yeah.

But then it doesn't say whether it was a true samurai or just a wannabe with the sword.

Then again, maybe he's just a Kurosawa/Mifune fan.

I've read stories about people robbing stores with swords; I wouldn't be real surprised if they started saving them with one.

There was a murder committed here in Columbus with a "samurai sword" some years ago.

Vigilantes....Vigil indeed. America was founded by common men seeking justice, and occasionally it is a right and noble thing to put it back into their hands....

I completely agree with MSP on the ninja bit, but I still think it's pretty interesting nonetheless.

They would arrest him for showing them how useless their police force are.

Though I am skeptical of the article, I am more skeptical about the role and necessity of a police force. Too often police in our society are out there brutalizing people for trivial crimes (or for no reason at all!) while they let (or even participate in) more serious crimes.

I am sick and tired of this double standard that the police are the bearers of justice while normal people (whom they erroneously call "civilians") should just sit back and let them "do their job" while real evil people do their evil acts. If our society were truly a civil society, police wouldn't exist.

There is also the possiblity that the "hero" actually used the criminals as accomplices, but I'll rant about that later.
