I'm joining the Air Force

Talk about anything in here.

I'm joining the Air Force

Postby Eric » Tue Jan 09, 2007 1:08 pm

I talked to a recruiter yesterday and he said I am perfectly qualified to join except I have to lose 15 pounds, so I'm working out and eating less now to get down to 200. I'll be joining on January 26th. I took the practice ASVAB and got 76; I'll be taking the actual one tomorrow.

Just thought I'd let everyone know that I'll be gone for maybe 7-8 weeks once I leave depending on when I get Internet at my new place once I get out of basic training.

Wow, that's a big decision. Thank you for choosing to serve your country. Let us know where you're going to be stationed.

I'll be praying for you.

That's pretty cool, man. I wanted to join the Air Force when I was a kid, kind of, but then I had to get glasses when I was 10 and that sort of went down the drain. :P :lol:

God bless you in this and thank you for your desire to serve our country.

GOD BLESS YOU!!!!!!!

yea, I'm going in when I get my degree and also lose some weight. I'm also going to wait to see my baby born in April and I NEED to be there for that. Personally, I wish I was already in now. Jealous of ya! LOL

BTW. did the Requiter have you sign a contract yet? Just so you know, your requiter may be able to add in things on your contract if you ask them too. make sure that your contract SPELLS OUT IN DETAIL what you want to do with your career. sometimes complications occur after Basic and it helps to have a paper that shows what you are entitled to. Not saying anything bad about the military (I'd never do that) but the government often gives the military the short end of the stick in my oppinion, and... well... <mod edit> stuff happens. of course, theres also always a loophole to a contract so don't cling to it like its gold either. long story short, be careful what you sign up for in the military! If your smart, you can have a very fulfilling career. but If you jump in headfirst, you could be one of the guys that the government takes for granted. I hope you do great! I'm sure you will!!

<mod note: Using symbols to represent a curse word where everyone knows what word you "didn't say" is considered equivilant to cursing here. If you're going to censor yourself, do it properly-- choose an entirely acceptable word to use in place of the curse word.>

What field of work do you plan to work for?
My father joined the Navy just as WW II ended. He wanted to be a cook, but ended up a aircraft machinist when they showed him pictures of tools.
He did a term in the Navy, left and went back home and then didn't like being a civilian so he joined the Air Force just after it separted from the Army. Acourse he went back to working on aircraft.
He retired from that after 20 years and went to work for the phone company as a cable splicer and did that for 20 years.

Welcome to the family, mien frieund. My dad was an army ranger, his dad was a marine, my step-dad was an E6 dry-dock worker, and my brother...is a Marine, lord save us all.

I'll probably be joining up next year as well, so good luck to you and me both.

When my second cousin joined the Marines she had to loose some weight as well so she ended up eating at what they called The Big Girls' Table,which is where all
the females that had to loose weight ate during meals.

I'll probably go for some sort of intelligence or computer-related career. The preliminary grading of my ASVAB was 90 (it was graded right after I took it), so once it gets graded by the computer it'll probably be a bit higher. Which means that I can basically do whatever I want except for the really mechanically-oriented careers (since I know I didn't do so well in that section; most of my answers were educated guesses), which I wouldn't be interested in anyways.

He also said that I would probably be able to start basic training during April, May, or June, but depending on job availability and other things, I could even start in late February or March.

I plan on signing on for as many years as I can to start with since this is really my best career option for the near future.

(funny thing....my ASVAB score is more than twice what my recruiter's was :lol: )

I found out my line scores last week. The overall score is still 90.

General=90
Administrative=90
Mechanical=94
Electrical=98 (it would've been 100 but the test ended one second before I could fill in the last answer)

I got back from the MEPS yesterday. I weighed in at 195 pounds, which is 7 pounds under the max weight for my height (6 feet). Everything else went really smoothly, especially because I was a one of the front loaders, which means that I was one of the people to have top priority over everyone else to get processed faster. And once I get one of the jobs I listed, I will enlist for 6 years so I can start off as an E-3.

So now I just have to wait until I get shipped out for basic training.

That was one of the ones I was initially interested in, but my uncorrected eyesight is worse than 20/400, so I can't do that one (same thing with Airborne Battle Management). Here is the list of jobs [that I qualify for] I put down in order of priority:

1. Electronic Signals Intelligence Exploitation
2. Intelligence Applications
3. Signal Intelligence Analysis
4. Imagery Interpreter
5. Electronic System Security Assessment
6. Electronic Computer & Switching Systems
7. Communications-Computer Systems Operations
8. Signals Intelligence Production
9. Aircraft Armament Systems

Air Guard or Army Guard Kyoto? I'm in the Army National Guard and Army ROTC, Simultaneous Membership rocks I get paid E-6 otherwise I would be E-3.

Grats Eric even though I naturally prefer Army but hey at least you didn't go Navy.;) Nobody freak out it's just friendly branch jabs.

Unfortunately, it didn't work out, so I'll have to keep waiting some more. I have a regular ship date of April 10th, but I'm going to try to leave sooner than that.

I'm enlisting for active duty.

Thank you very much sir for choosing to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces.

I'm so thankful for fellow Americans such as yourself who choose to serve and protect our nation. My grandfather fought in WW2 in the Pacific against the Japanese and became a Prisoner of War. He's now on his deathbed even as we speak; the doctor's don't give him too much longer. :(

Thank you again, sir. May God be with you.
