Personifying Possessions...

Do you guys think it is a little weird to give personal, identifying names to inanimate objects? Like how blues singer B.B. King names his guitar "Lucille", or how most World War II pilots named their own aircraft after people they knew back home.

Can it go as far as naming your own computer "Joe" or "Jane", or your favorite car "Bob"?

Not particularly. XD My family has dubbed my old G3 Mac "Hugely Blue", affectionately "Hugely". XD I just call it a big, blue spaceship though. That seems to work just as well. XD

:lol: I don't see anything strange about it. My laptop is named Heimdall, my cameras are Loki and Freyr, the iPod is Haruka...>.>;

I even talk to them sometimes. XD; Like "Dear Heimdall, stop crashing on me. >/". So no, nothing out of the ordinary to me.

I think you're actually told to name your iPod when you first hook it up to a computer. At least I think that's why mine is named Lilo O_o

And my powerbook is named Silvy. I've never named my violin though, or my car. Seems to mostly be electronics that keep picking up names from me.

I think I need to work on my tendency towards printer-rage O_o

Let's see . . . I have . . .

Apple 15" G4 PowerBook named Mitsuki-chan
Apple 4GB iPod nano named raiPod
Used Nintendo DS [phat] named Yuuko
BC Rich NJ-series Warlock electric guitar named Lucrezia
Taylor acoustic/electric guitar named Serenade
As-of-yet-unnamed Dean Metalman V electric bass
Deceased [totaled] 1996 Buick Regal GS named the Blue Bomber

And that's it so far. I need to think of a suitable name for my bass.

Ok:

Computer: Compy

Car: Ambelina

DS Lite: Ophelia

I don't think it's strange at all. I'd name more of my stuff, except that I'm bad with names and would probably forget them. ;;>.>

(I name my pens (not the inking ones - those die too quickly) - the colored one's are usually named the Japanese equivelant of their color, and the black ones are just conscripts in my "Army of Black Pens".)

(My DS Lite is named "Riina" after Tahiri Velia's Yuuzong Vong personality in Star Wars. I plan on modding her someday to give her a Vong-ish look.)

(My short-owned black 30gb iPod never officially got a name because I had him for all of a week (bought it, then ended up buying a refurbed 60gb), but while I had him I started calling him "Kuro-sama" and "Kuro-rin" and "Kuro-pon" and whichever of Kurogane's nicknames came to mind. I was planning on naming the white one that I have now Shiroi, but I decided to name him Fai D. Flowright instead because I called the other one Kurogane.)

Ah, into Norse mythology, are we? Yay! Me too! My Siberian Husky's name is Loki, and for good reason...

My truck's name is Big Red (even though I hate that brand of gum), and my brother's is named Black Betty. My brother also named my Wii after me. (It's named Bay, which is my nickname.) Oh, and my favorite blanket's name is Snowthing. He is light-blue with white snowflakes printed all over him. We both sleep in my bed every night, and I'm practically attached to him anytime I'm at home.

It's just as werid sounding when people name their pets people names, like "Deborah the dog" (a real one I heard too, just sounds funny^^) Think it sounds even weirder if someone were to say "Yeah, Richard was good to the last drop".

Oh wow, I'm glad I'm not alone. A girl I knew used to do this all the time and I eventually startedd to do it... my electric guitar is Steve, the acoustic is Cecelia (acoustic guitars are girls), my tape dispenser at work is Old Reliable and protects me from women, and my machine at work is called Evangeline. The smaller one next to it is called The Saviour Machine. These are just a few of the many things I've named... some of them get a luittle wilder...

Wow, and I totally thought I was the only one who did this. :)

Anyways, I happen to have my computer named "Gordon" (of the Half Life fame). While I never got to name my old defunct iPaq pda, my Dell Axim is affectionately titled "Elmina" (after an anime character). My basketball "Fred" and I have spent many good years in the courts, but he's now retiring due to his physical condition - he's flat as a pancake...

People name inanimate objects for the same reason ships are always 'she'.

As far as it goes I haven't named anything aroud the house but there are a few
choice things I'd love to call the computer from time to time that are rather unprintable in English.Ah..wish I hadn't left my Klingon Dictionary in my other room!
