Cedarville University

[Raiden no Kishi]

I'm considering Cedarville U. as a potential college to attend and I would like to know if anyone here has attended or is attending this university. I'd like to have an insider's view about the school, instead of the candy-coated videos and the like that you get when you visit. If anyone can help, I would very much appreciate it.

I've been up on the campus before just for a youth conference (we stayed in the dorms and used all their facilities), and my person opinion is that it's too bland... it's in the middle of a corn field and the whole feeling just wasn't my cup of tea. I do know several people that went there, though, and they really like it. But all my feelings aside, they did have a nice campus.

They have weird dress code rules for class though.

I heard it was really REALLY conservative, which I am not,so I wasn't really interested in going there. Other than that, I've heard its a pretty good school.

I have visited the campus recently and I did spend two weeks there for a Summit Ministries conference [the first at Cedarville], but we were on a tight schedule and couldn't spend enough time.

They won't allow dancing on or off campus [seriously] and they'll make me trim my hair. T_T They will, however, allow ballet, so I might have to take that up if I were to go. I hope it doesn't come to that.

Yup. Near Dayton in the southwestern section of the state.

But yes, Coby is right. It's near Dayton [I want to say about 20 minutes from Dayton]. In fact, after Summit, a couple of guys and I went to the Air Force museum there. Good stuff.

As far as the rules go it would depend entirely on your personality on wheter or not it was the type of school that you would be happy in attending.Some people simply thrive in situations where there are stricter rules and regulations.It helps them to concentrate on their studies.On the other hand there are people who can actually party hearty and still get passable grades.

The odd rules are not uncommon in more conservative Christian schools – even large liberal arts universities. Most have some rules that any of us who were raised in public high schools and perhaps attended class on a secular university campus would find unnecessarily strict.

My view on the rules my shed some light and perspective:

The rules, such as the mentioned prohibition from dancing either on campus or off, do not necessarily assert that dancing or drinking or whatever is wrong, that is, a [i]sin[/i[ to participate in (even though that may be why they were outlawed at the university to begin with – this is my take, not necessarily the take of the university).

I look at it this way – I’m sure some professors there would agree, some would disagree – the university is trying to promote an atmosphere, a lifestyle for the students while they are studying there. This atmosphere’s purpose is to draw the students out of the world they knew and help them focus on their studies and on God.

I would consider the rules to be a (four) year fast, if I were you. If you find there is something you just can’t give up, you are better off with out it, to be honest, anyways. There is but One that we can not do with out. If you feel that the rules simply prevent you from living in the joy that is your inheritance, then you will need to find another school.

I think Bob Jones has some of the strictest rules of any school around.

I actually know a couple of guys who graduated from Cedarville. One studied law enforcement, I believe, and the other is now an officer in the military (though I forgot what he studied). Everything I've heard about Cedarville seems to be generally good, save the outrageous tuition. However, a high tuition is common with private, accredited Christian schools.
