I Hate Getting Old

Talk about anything in here.

Postby Cognitive Gear » Tue Dec 12, 2006 4:18 pm

I refuse to believe that I am old. Why? Because I have seen actual old people (around 80) who are in better shape than I am! their secret is "Youth is in the mind". Since then, I have decided that age is just a number. If my number has to get large; then so be it. However, I will be enjoying life as much as possible regardless of what that number is.
[font="Tahoma"][SIZE="2"]"It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things."

*laughs at all the youngsters who think they're "getting old"*

Just wait 'til you're THIRTY... Now, THIRTY is OOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLDDD.....

Seriously, I do remember feeling the same way at your age... Not so much feeling old, but being weirded out by the fact that I was technically an adult and expected to take on adult responsibilities, but I still felt quite callow. (<-- look it up) :)

Dude, I totally know how you feel! Especially the dA part! It's ridiculous! I feel my life has passed me by and I'm only 18. X3

And, dude, my brothers and I used to have a sega gensis. And I thought the graphics rocked.

I'm also sooo scared about getting out on my own... but I know I'll have to do it very soon for my own good...

Shiroi: That's true; gaming and watching cartoons helps me to feel young, too. ^^ Maybe I should do that more. I actually used to be more of a crabby old woman about younger ones than I am now. Though even now I sometimes start sentences with 'in my day' when talking with people in their early teens.

I'm still living at home, CR, but I know I'm going to miss it when I move out, too. -_-

Thanks for the encouragement, Peregrine! And thank you, too, Puguni. That quote is very, very encouraging, too. There is still hope for artists to take over the world. We just need to work together. ^^

Thanks too, Khaki. Lol - ok. No more MSDOS conversations. ~_^

Hahha, sorry, RD! Yeah you're right.... there are people who don't know the name N'Sync. I was never into them, but at least I know the name and that they were a boy band. Actually, I guess now I can empathise with the people who are aghast I haven't heard of.. (asks an older work --but still young, she insists-- colleague for examples) Three's Company, Magnum PI, Gem....

Ahh the NES. I had a SNES. I played Bubble Bobble, Duck Hunt, and Super Mario Bros 3 on it. Good times. Good times. Now I download an emulator for the computer. Craaaazy. XD.

Ahhh yes, Tenshi. I'm looking forward to the Wii (came out a few days ago here... it will be a while before/if I get it, but I'm not overexcited about it. Gaming systems come and go.

Heh, if I was an American that would be funnier. It's still funny though.

Good point, Ikimasu. Age is just a number. I guess I could quote "You're only as old as you feel" -- and I don't take feel in a physical sense in this case. ~_^ I agree. Enjoying life is good. I'm just moaning to mark the passage into adulthood, I guess.

Don't laugh, Eirewolf! Remember, you were once here too. ~_^. Hahahaha yes, thirty is old. I'm glad you remember being in this position. Yes, its the technically being an adult and all the responsibilities that freak me it. Its like they all suddenly jumped on me when I wasn't looking. Hahahaha I'm pretty sure that I know what callow means but.... (*looks it up anyway just to make sure*).

I'm more excited about going out on my own, Cobalt, although its still a little scary. Its probably because I expect to be living in New Zealand, though living in Japan for a year on the JET program after Uni is a real possibility. One of my friends used to have a Sega Genesis... and I once thought it rocked graphics-wise too!

I used to fight down the panic by thinking, "Millions of people before me have survived this transition and are doing fine. I'll be okay too."

Also, a scripture that God really used to comfort me during that time was Psalm 46:10: "Be still, and know that I am God."

And Jeremiah 29:11: "'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the LORD, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'"

IMHO, you only really count as being old if you remember blowing the cartridge on the Original Nintendo Entertainment System!

BTW, I still have my Sega Genesis! I may just break it out just for old times sake.

YOU! SHUT UP! NOW! Xp

It's also odd to think that I'm technically as old as the Megaman series. >.>

Yeah I absolutely identify. I'm working a full time and a part time job. I'd like to have more free time... but I like money. :sighs:
But at least you know what DOS is, too, Myoti! Good on you for making characters in your stories older!

Heheh, thanks. =p

Some of them just irritate the heck out of me, and I feel like swinging a cane at them and rambling on about how it was different back in my day. >_>;

I want a sword-cane. Those just seem so awesome... (*somehow relevant*)

Dude I still think MSDOS is the best operating system Microsoft has put out yet.

And about there being no anime chars young than 17 that save the would, don't worry. That will change as all of use anime loving old duffers get older and start wanting to watch animes with old people in them.

So are any of you old enough to know what bata is? How about, U-matic or real-to-real?

Surefire sign that proves if you're old or not--

If you remember when your computer's operating system was on a 5 1/2 inch floppy disk...then you're old!

My first PC was top of the range. 254MB harddisk, Windows 3.11, DoS 6.2 and 4 megs of RAM. I remember my high school friends asking me, "Dude, how can you use all that RAM and harddisk space? I cannot come to grips with this man! I am not worthy!!!"

I'll be 31 in a couple of weeks. I do feel old. Stupid body starts to break down and all... bursitis is such a pain. Literally.

I didn't really have my OWN computer until I got married. We had computers in the house at home, but they were either my brother's or the family's. Our first was a Commodore 64, I think. I could be wrong, there may have been another as well. Then we had a Tandy... 2000 (? - If I remember right). That was my brother's old college computer that he gave to us when he got a new one. No hard drive, only an external 5.25" floppy drive, and you had to use this boot disk when you turned it on in order to use it. And there was a specific order to turn things on in, too. Those were the same ones we had in middle school - but the only thing we used them for was learning how to type. (And at that it was for only one third of one year.) I never had any computer classes in high school. I'm not even sure if my high school had any computers. I guess they must've, because even the kindergarten had had a Commodore or something like it back in the early 80s. I never saw any in the high school though, that I can remember.

One of my older brothers got that computer Ultra Magnus mentioned - with the 254MB hard drive (though I thought it was 256MB). He could only put a couple of programs on there and the space would be all used up. When Windows 95 came out, I was totally in the dark, and didn't even see it until about 98, when I started working as an office manager. I am pretty sure we had Windows 3.1 at home until then.

Amazing how quickly things change, and how hard it can be to keep up. I think I've done ok though - I am FAR from computer illiterate. I just learned by tinkering. I know too many people my age who know nothing or next to nothing about computers and it is kind of sad, since our society revolves around technology.

Ah, the mindless ramblings of an OLD person....
In Christ,
Dyzzi

I've always looked older than I am. I had a full beard at 12. So it would be awkward when I'd be at restraunts with my mother and younger siblings and they'd give me the check. My father and I were mistaken for twins, once.

And for all the talk about 8 tracks and audio cassettes and the accelerating obsolescence of CDs.. has anyone noticed that VHS tapes have almost completely disappeared?

I felt really old the other day... some of us were making fun of one of my friends (his girlfriend has him totally whipped) and I realized... we are talking about marriage as though it were a very real possibility, and indeed an inevitability... not just the vague nebulous concept of "marriage" in general, but a very specific marriage between two of our friends... and it wasn't at all awkward or strange, to speak of their marriage. It hit me:

When did we become adults?

I decided to make the statement that I refuse to become an adult, simple and plain... there is no rule book stating that one has too anyways, and I don't always want to follow rulebooks just because they're there. I simply decided on an alternate route. From baby (ages 0-4) to kid ((ages 5-12) to teenager (ages 13-18) to something else, that something is not main track... and because no one else seems to be doing it, I don't need to give it a name. But by doing this I can avoid the primary thing we all fear about the term adult, and that isn't so much the responcibility as the culture. It just seems... I don't know... dead. Plain shirts, blending in, acting certain ways, fitting in for the sake of bussinesses that are only going to knock us off when they don't need us anyways...

Its like a dead end cutlure, whose primary goal is simple and the same for everyone: Act like a dull responcible XYZ person who is better represented by a number (Ones SSN) than a personality, but they'll use the letters in your name to fake being human on occasion. One is to make money (As much as possible and horde it all)... as that is the only goal, it doesn't matter if there isn't anything you really want to spend it on, just earn it! (someone said that whomever leaves life with the most toys wins... it wasn't Zarn) Then get married to produce 2.5 children and prepare for retirement. You'll likely die from a big mac attack before you can reach it, but you must do so anyways because... well that is what all all good adults do. Then upon completion of this, leave your kids a good deal of money and change them into good little adults and surrender to a nursing home... no we don't have elders in our society, the old are to keep their mouths shut and add nothing to societal commentary... not that it matters anyways, they'll simply be labeled as "crazy" or "having alzheimers" by the younger elite to avoid taking time to listen... Thus they don't even try to gain wisdom.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with my new definition of my age group... but if I even change one thing, It will definitely be an improvement! :P Viva de revolution!!! (Whatch out for the men in black suits and sunglasses... they come and take you away if you no sell your heart and soul to the man!)
