Was Leonardo Half-Arabic?

Postby mitsuki lover » Sat Dec 02, 2006 12:12 pm

I was reading this article in the Spokesman Review today that stated some
Italian scientists think that based on fingerprints that came off of mss and
other objects Leonardo is said to have touched that his mother might have been of Arabic origin.
According to the article supposedly patterns on fingerprints differ from
ethnic group to ethnic group. However it also cited scientists who were skeptical of the claim by noting that SOME in SOME ethnic groups have
CERTAIN patterns in their fingerprints.
Still since little is known about Leonardo's personal life from birth to the time he left Vinci(most of what he know is really from his Florentine
period)it is tempting to believe just about anything that comes along.

The question is: Does it honestly really matter?

I don't see it mattering much what ethnicity he really was.

Ditto. So, what about it?

All I remember about his parents is that he was taught by his father and never went to school.

No, no, no. Leonardo is from New York. Likes blue. Carries two swords. Is a turtle. Duh.

What my point here is that since we know so little about Leonardo's actual background that anything that we can find to help fill in the blanks would actually be of some sort of help.As one of the world's greatest genuises it is a pity we don't know that much about him.

It's just like when Columbus was found to not be Italian but Spanish, just interesting trivia people. Nothing wrong with trying to get the historic truth.

Also note that "da Vinci" is not a last name. Translated into English, it would be "Leonardo from Vinci".

Then I'll enjoy believing that he was from New Zealand all along. He was just fooling everyone. ;)

Ah, so that's what you meant. Yes, I find him fascinating. I used him as an example in one of the essays I wrote during the GRE, referencing how the powers that be prevented him from doing autopsies on corpses because they mistook it for worshiping the dead.
