There is explicit evidence that the early Church baptized infants as early as the second century, and implicit scriptural evidence from when entire households were baptized. Baptism is necessary for salvation, Jesus himself said it, so it is certainly permissible for a parent to have their child baptized. Also remember that baptism is a free gift of grace from God that does not presuppose any human merit, so age is really not an issue there.
