Being Scottish vs.Being Scots

Postby mitsuki lover » Tue Nov 21, 2006 12:20 pm

Ok so this proves I have way too much time to think about things, but the actual truth is there is really a difference between being Scottish and being
Scots.Or another way of putting it not everyone of Scottish descent is of
Scots descent.
Confused?
Ok,here's why:
Like England Scotland became a sort of melting pot during the centuries.
One of the most important groups that settled there was the Scots, the tribe that gave the country it's name.
That's all and good, but here's where it gets interesting and why I mean not everyone who is of Scottish descent is of Scots descent;you see among the other groups that settled in what would later become Scotland were the
Norse.
Now over time the Norse assimilated into Scottish culture and some of the
Clans can even trace their history and heritage to the Norse. So that there are for example both Scots MacDonalds and Norse MacDonalds.
So well descendants of both can claim to be Scottish only the ones descended from the Scots MacDonalds can really claim to be of Scots descent.
And to further confuse everyone, since the Scots were originally an Irish
tribe it can rightly be said that all those of Scottish descent who are also of
Scots descent are Irish!

On the other hand, you're truly Scottish if your descent is from the Picts, while if you're of scotch descent, you come from whiskey!
The cake used to be a lie like you, but then it took a portal to the deception core.

Quick notice, Scotland was invaded by everyone close enough. All I know about my ancesters is they were from a hill. With a corner, apparently. Last point, humanity started in Africa. Just saying before you all try to get me into guinness.

Actually the Picts were assimilated into the Scots by way of conquest and intermarriage so in that way just about anyone who is of Scots descent is of Pictish descent as well.
And it was one of those things that I just got to thinking about when my mind had nothing much to think about. My mind is weird that way.
btw:If you read up on DNA there is a difference between the Scots and the Norse.
The Norse belong to haplogroup I1a while the Scots belong to haplogroup R1b.
i.e. based on the Y-DNA of the two groups.

Humanity started in Africa, eh? Are you sure? It started in the Garden of Eden. We don't know where that was, except that it was somewhere near the Tigris and Euphrates River. So that would place it in modern day Iraq, which is Asia.

Actually the Mid-East is a natural land bridge between Asia and Africa, which btw has nothing to do with the thrust of the thread.
