Worrying about what others think

Postby The Last Bard » Sun Nov 19, 2006 7:11 pm

So if you guys even still remember me...haha It's been a while.

Ok, I now go to a public school and I'm a junior. But my problem is I have this horrible problem of worrying about what people think of me. Like for example, I'm not one of the lonely kids in school, but I always feel like something is going to happen and people aren't going to like me or something.
I don't know what to do about it. Please give advice!

Just be yourself. Yeah, people are gonna think things about you, but they can't dictate who you should be and all.

In high school, that seems to be a very popular concern. how I look at is that if we try to please everyone, we wouldn't really have time to enjoy our lifes.

I think many realize that after highschool how little it really meant. People get lifes and go there seperate ways. You wont see more than 90% ever again anyways.

Try not to worry about pleasing everyone, it can't be done. Just be happy ^_^

The biggest regret anyone can have in life is that they try too hard to be what others wanted to be and not what they really were like.So stop worrying about what everyone else is thinking and simply live your life the way you think you ought to.

I think that to a certain degree everyone shares that fear (at least I do). For example, I did a comedy routine yesterday and was nervous that I would somehow ruin it and everyone would find me horribly unfunny.

At times like this it is helpful for me to remember that relationships are complex. People aren't going to stop liking you if you make a mistake; everyone makes mistakes. Chances are they won't even remember whatever you did wrong once enough time goes by. Everyone else has their weaknesses as well, yet I doubt you hold those against them. You are much more than a single incident.

Overall, people tend to be positive about other people. At the same time, no matter who you are, there will always be a few negative people. That's alright; don't let their comments bother you. So ultimately what I'm saying is that you can relax about what others think.

Some people are going to dislike you. There's no way around it. Sometimes it's your fault they don't like you - maybe an offhand comment that gave them a poor first impression of you, or maybe you said something to them at some point and they just can't let it go. Some people won't like you through no fault of your own.

The real trick in life is spending a significant part of your time thinking about other people. Wondering if other people like you and what you should do to make them like you (or simply not dislike you) is selfish. With this kind of thought pattern, the best you can hope for is please others through phony measures required to “fit in.â€

Well I just freed myself of the mess of high school (I'm a freshman in college) and I'm going to be sorta blunt about this....

Once I was out of high school I looked back and wanted to hit my head for every time I worried about what other people thought of me. High school is very shallow and very 'clique'-ish. :bang:

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it, but real life is not at all like high school. In addition to that...I wouldn't be too worried about people not liking you anyway. Did you know that over 96% of high schoolers are always worrying about themselves? As such rarely does anyone really notice if you mess up big time, unless you make a big deal over it. (I don't know if 96% is the exact statistic anymore. That's what I was told my sophomore year at any rate.) ;)

To top off this stupendous rant I'm going to be a Bible banger. We, as people, should really worry about pleasing God the most. If other people don't like it, tough. And He loves you more than anyone else possibly could.

I think the only advice I can give is what I've done with myself. I've never tried to fit in not ever. Be yourself completely and be stern with that. If you aren't it's hard. I've actaullly been MAD at myself because I was trying 'not to fit in'. And it works, to this day.
Good luck!

I agree with all of the above. just remember, Gods oppinion is the only one that will matter in teh end. and beyond that, ya gotta live for yourself. just think, If EVERYONE in your school HATED you utterly, then less than a fraction of a percentage of the world dislikes you. feel better? If they don't like you for who you are, then find someone who does. just because "society" says your wrong, doesn't mean that you are.
