FMA alternatives

The real heart of CAA; discuss specific series, issues, and things related to anime here.

The first time I watched FMA I had a little trouble with the circles too cuz they looked to close to pentgrams so that might be it...plus the fact of creating stuff!!!
Also everyone lay off his Dad cause he's a parent its his job to care what his son watches cuz that means he loves him-"Train up the child in the way he should go...Prov. 22:6"
Sorry to sound rude but plz be nice!

well for the half-joking part, my bad. i took a little seriously and overreacted. as for the other half that's true. the manga's IMO better than the anime by far.

No IMO needed: it is better (at least from what I've heard). XD

Also, I don't seem to recall quite as many 'mature' themes that Animus listed in the manga. There were alot, but I suppose it was handled differently (and thankfully the whole deal between 'Sloth' and 'Wrath' isn't in the manga). I haven't seen too much of the anime, but the manga also seems to have quite a bit of slightly more 'light-hearted' moments, which sort of balances some of those darker themes.

This has been stated several times, and I don't think I agree. I can't remember anything from RK that I thought was all that graphic (though I could have forgotten about something). Whereas FMA regularly has Scar exploding people alive. Am I missing something here?

Scar blowing people's insides out seems tame compared to much of the RK manga, where you have people regularly being decapitated, cut into pieces, split in half, having objects rammed into in their luimbs, one guy biting his nails out from the roots, etc.

FMA does have some moments of it's own, but the Scar exampled doesn't seem nearly as bad (since, as said, it usually has them being blown up from within). I'd say stuff like the guard getting the top of his face whacked off and all the damage the Hormunculi take to be worse (though the latter typically regenerate anyways).

They did that in the anime too. But when it was getting close to the end of the series, it was heavy on the dark themes.

Ooh, I do! XD
It's that whole scene in...well, one of the Kyoto arc volumes (I wanna say vol. 11...maybe 12 or 13) where Usui starts pulling out Houji's fingernails, but Houji decides to rip them all out with his teeth instead, to show his loyalty to "Shishio-sama". Yeah. It was pretty nasteh. O_o
Still, with Anji's head-squishing techniques and the frequent soldier getting sliced in half...I'd have to say Kenshin's the more graphically violent of the two, from what I've heard of FMA. XD

Indeed.

Rather superfluous with "FMA" available, in my opinion, but that's beside the point.

Sorry; force of habit.

I'll again pose the question to ruruoninaruto; what is it about Fullmetal Alchemist that you liked?

Memmer, lay off the subject about his dad. He's looking for alternatives to FMA, not for people to question his father's authority.

i still don't understand why you're allowed to watch or read rurouni kenshin and naruto but not watch FMA? i say that if your dad's not letting you watch it, just wait a year or two and then you'll probably be old enough to watch the anime. for now, just stick with some other anime. you have plenty of excellent choices to choose from.

Yeah I think we should all respect what his dad says and not bother bringing it up anymore and find something that both would enjoy in its stead.

here are some of my recommendations for animes that could be an alternative for FMA:
getbackers (see review)
samurai 7 (already recommended. see review)
yu yu hakusho (see review. if your dad doesn't like the stuff in FMA then it'd be best to watch the edited version of this anime)

Oh, that. Now I recall it. It must not have registered with me that strongly the first time I read it.

Although, I wouldn't say people getting sliced in half is very "frequent." You can probably count all of the instances of that happening on about one hand.

there was also a beheading in rurouni kenshin early on into the series (volume 2) so yeah. that was pretty surprising.

For some reason, barely any of this made much of an impact on me. I guess I felt it wasn't presented in a manner that was disgusting (like the last, for example) because the gore wasn't emphasized. The only thing I remember wincing at is when Saito's sword goes into the long-armed mining guy's arm in the last arc.

Well actually, It TV-14, which is bit of a difference since it is highly recommended to older teens. And probably his father may think its witchcraft. Not to mention Ed is agnostic. Probably, your dad may think its full of witchcraft and stuff like that.
