What shows would you watch based on character design?

Postby ABlipinTime » Sun Apr 24, 2011 11:34 am

Basically, which of the following shows would you watch just based on the design on the character (and give the reason why - Is it appealing? Is it good anatomy that you appreciate?) from this list/chart:

(thanks to Wallachia, post 42 in "How Important are Character Designs to You?" http://www.christiananime.net/showthread.php?t=58617&page=2)

Feel free to add your own chart of shows, but please please PLEASE don't just give a show title (since those of us who quickly google a show just to see what it looks like will get tons of skewed results and some shows are filtered from watching such that we are unable to see a genuine example).

I don't care how old the chart is (since the age of the anime is not the concern of this poll), but, if you post a hyperlink, make sure it's to a website that doesn't contain "mature content" - we'd like even our younger members to participate in this poll.

NOTE: THE NUMBERING on in the poll is by row. i.e. 1-6 is the top row, 7-8 is the second row, and so forth. If you vote on added charts that don't have show-titles, it'd be nice of you to use this same system. (Even though some rows maybe smaller than other ones).

I hope I'm not asking too much. I'm just trying to stay orderly.

Thanks!

here

Green circles are for shows I've already watched, red X's for shows I wouldn't watch, with everything left as what I wouldn't mind.

Thus, illustrating that character design doesn't matter to me.

Actually, the thumbnail I posted would have shown the bigger version of the image if you left-clicked on it.

Here's a link to the large one and the thumbnail that links to the original. Maybe edit this into your post.
If you do, I'll remove the thumbnail in this post later on to save space in the topic.

As a side note, the one with the blue man is from Interstella5555, and it's just an hour-long music video so you can't go wrong watching it.

6, 11 and 35. Attempting to stop anything else I know about any of the anime pictured affect my judgement, though that's probably impossible to completely avoid. (I love -- spoilering a show title, for anyone who wants to avoid them --
Heartcatch's character designs and Moonlight's my favourite of the Heartcatch Cures, so, um, yeah.)
Character designs are not normally a big factor in making me want to watch something, which is I imagine why only three of the images really piqued my interest.

Wow. There's so many shows here and I feel compelled to talk about many of them, but that's be too much work. I've seen all or part of about 14 or 15 of these. I can't say whether I'd "watch" or "not watch" some of these based on their designs, because it'd just be a matter of preferring some to others. If I had the time/gumption/bandwidth to watch all of these shows, I'd probably watch all of them (or at least start them to see if I liked them; sometimes I don't). But if I could only watch three quarters, I'd leave out some, and if I could only watch half, I'd leave out more. The most I can say is I'd start with the pretty ones, and leave out the ugly ones if necessary, but not only is that a sliding subjective measure, it also varies depending on what mood I'm in. I cannot reduce that fluctuating fuzziness to a set of binary choices.

Even though I was quite vocal about character design, in the end I'm fairly forgiving, so it's easier for me to just point the few which character design actually would turn me off from seeing at least as knee-jerk reaction:

5. Too ugly
7. Too realistic (or is that just a rotoscopied photo?)
11. Unfortunately, I've never liked Monkey Punch's designs. I really had to push myself to watch Castle of Cagliostro.
18. Too weird. However I've heard it's an awesome movie and I'll watch it some time.
20. I have a problem with weird noses. I put up with Escaflowne, but this might be too much.
43. 60s style doesn't sit too well with me. However, I can easily overlook it if I know it's going to be a good series.
48. Design betrays (or so it seems to me) that's a series oriented to young kids.

Honestly, I'd watch all those shows and have seen about half. I'm so used to being surrounded by and dealing with all sorts of art (all my friends are artists. I've been to a bajillion art museums) that nothing bothers me. Nothing.

Apart from the shows that I've either seen or decided already are not for me on other grounds than character style, the shows whose style turns me off (or I've already decided not to watch due to the style) are 12, 14, 18, 20, 24, 35, 38, 43, 47, and 48. The rest I would need more information before deciding whether to watch.

I tackled the other lists in ABlipInTime's first post, but the result is 1.5 pages long, so I'll just put the number of shows in each category.

Shows I won't watch due to character design (17, including several kids' shows)
Shows whose character designs I don't mind but won't watch or abandoned for other reasons (16)
Shows whose character designs I dislike but will watch or did watch anyway (2)
Shows that lost me at the title (8)
Shows I've already watched or am watching (6)
Shows whose character designs I don't mind but would need to do more research before deciding to watch (all the rest)

I've actually watched most of these animes/movies, the exceptions mainly being 44 (because I'm not really into most sports anime), 47, and 48. As long as the plot is good enough, I'll give it a go.

There are a lot of these I don't recognize. As I said in the other thread, character design/art style is kinda far down on my priority list when it comes to selecting the shows I watch.

From the poll I chose 3, 9, 15, 17, 23, 27, 37, and 45. These are just the ones that stood out to me as "ooh, that looks nice!" I would probably watch any of the others if I heard other things about them that appealed to me, and be able to handle it.

From Winter 09/10, the only one that I would choose is number 5, but it's so small I can't really tell.

From Fall 2010, the only one is 16, though there are some others I wouldn't mind seeing even though they seem fairly average to me.

From Spring 2011, only 15 and maybe 11.

Considering these choices of mine, I can see that I tend towards the realistic or the sharp, clean styles. I also noticed while looking through those pictures that I have an aversion to the kind of eyes that you'll see in Omamori Himari, MM! (?), or Moshidora. I've also noticed it in pictures of Haruhi Suzumiya. For some reason, I just don't like the way those eyes look.

But overall, I would totally watch a show even if I wasn't too fond of the art style, so long as it had other things going for it.

Ditto. I keep a pretty open mind when it comes to character designs. It's difficult for me to articulate what I wouldn't be willing to put up with in terms of that.
