Hair colours of anime girls

I've noticed a trend in my favourate anime girls. Here's a list of some of my favourate girls in anime:

Ami from Sailor Moon
Hayase from Kimi ga Nozomu Eien
Yuuko from Amaenaideyo!
Chikane from Kannazuki no Miko
Otome from Tsuyo Kiss
Miyuki from Mahoromatic

...The list goes on.

What do all these girls have in common? They've all got blue hair. This isn't to say i only like girls with blue hair. It's just that blue hair catches my eye for some reason. I don't know why i like the blue haired girls the most, but i'm pretty sure that personality has a lot to do with it. I just noticed this pattern while thinking about my favourate anime characters. Yep, I'm weird. Anyone else noticed a trend in their favourate anime characters?

I like anime characters that don't get much appreciation. Here's a sample list.

Trowa Barton--Gundam Wing

Jean Havoc--Full Metal Alchemist (ok, so he has a fan base. Still, it would've been nice to develop his character more.)

Boma--Heat Guy J (yes, he had an episode that explained more about him, but he's still a mystery!)

Shin and Lin--Cowboy Bebop (they've only got like a half episode each??)

For what it's worth, each character mentioned is male and has dark hair.

Chidori from Full Metal Panic has blue hair...a LOT of blue hair.

Seriously, is there that much blue hair dye in the world?

Pink. Lacus Clyne defines cute in Gundam Seed.

Chidori's is more greenish then blue to my eye.

I would say brown hair myself.

Reki from Haibane Renmei, all of the main girl protagonists in Makoto Shinkai's films have brown hair, Shizuku Tsukishima from Whisper of the Heart.

Hm, that's definitely an interesting observation.

Pink. Definitely pink, with secondary preferences of lilac and red.

This extends to RL. Pink is the only 'weird' hair dye that I tend to think actually looks good.

By the way, I've always thought we're supposed to perceive Chidori's hair as black. It's an old comic book standard (used more in American and UK comics, I think,) to use a shiny blue to represent lustrous black hair (actual black comes off as more of a flat black, like my wife's hair. She has fairly typical Southeast Asian hair.)

"And for some reason, I have...blue hair."

Personally, I prefer natural coloring gel for my fictional characters of choice.

Read the Manga (shameless plug).

After a serious but hasty analysis of my favorite characters, I believe that I don't have a strong tendency toward any one color (possibly because I read more manga than watch anime). Different colors seem to fit different hair styles and characters. If asked directly, however, I would probably say I like the look of black hair best.

Blue hair seems to be a trend in my favorite characters as well, followed by red.

If we're talking general trends and not just trends related to hair color...then it definitely would be yellow eyes for me. >.>

- Debitt and Jasdero from D.Gray-man (and the rest of the Noah family as well. :B)
- Son Goku from Saiyuki
- Agito from Air Gear
- Tao Ren from Shaman King

o~o Yep.

I like girls with fiery personalities, like
Lina Inverse, Slayers.
Miss Sanada, UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie
Aisha Clanclan, Outlaw Star

And so on.

On another note, if you like girls with blue hair, you'll probably love Shampoo from Ranma 1/2

I like the blue hair too! But usually I base the girls I like on their personality's...

like Hinata.. or kari from digimon 02

Most of my favorite characters (guys as well as girls) have black hair, but I suppose that's probably mainly because most Asians have dark hair. And I guess I generally don't watch many animes that have a lot of characters with weird hair colors.

Interesting choices...I remember there was a blue-haired girl that was particularly cute on S-Cry-Ed that had a weird personality that I liked!

Ironically she was voiced by Laura Jill Miller, the V/A for Kari on Digimon.

Oh, speaking of, Kari was okay in season 02, but she always seemed a bit...willowy to me. She was ALWAYS leaning on a guy be it Davis, TK or Tai. That kinda annoyed me a bit.

Ugh, I've just noticed that I'm guilty for this one.

Looking back at my favorite characters, nearly all of them have blonde hair except for a few black haired. Mainly because, if you were to really look, there are a lot of blonde anime characters who have this fiesty and sometimes mean outward personality, but inside they can be very caring. That just kinda catches my eye.

For example:
* Tsunade from Naruto
* Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist
* Cagalli from Gundam SEED
* Urahara from Bleach
* Astharoshe from Trinity Blood

You notice how all of these characters are somewhat fiesty, with the exception of Urahara, but he can be mean so he's still on the list. So yeah, I obviously lean towards the blondies.

And before anyone asks, no. I despise Naruto for his lack of working brains.

There is also a certain association between personality types and hair color. In anime, hair color is more about character identification than anything else.

The blue haired character is often the demure, dependable character or the “childhood friendâ€

I should point out my previous post was for characters in general. No real preferences based on gender.

In terms of characters overall, I strongly tend toward the calmer type. It's no guarantee, but if a character shows signs of being in control and thoughtful they are well on their way to me liking them.

I'll have to check Ranma 1/2 out.

I wonder what the hair colours each represent?

I tend to like girls that have nice personalities. (Sasami in Tenchi Muyo, Hinata in Naruto, and Alice in Please Save My Earth) I also like girls who are very good at standing up for themselves (Motoko in GITS, R. Dorothy Wainwright in Big O). And then there are those who are a little of both (like Kagome in Inu-Yasha).

I don't think hair color represents anything, unless it's addressed in the story (Youko in Twelve Kingdoms for example had red hair, to point out the fact she didn't belong in Japan). On the whole, I think the reason behind various hair colors is just to make one character different from the another.

I must say i disagree. Take pink for example. Energetic characters usually have this hair colour and you tend to associate cute characters with pink because it's a girly colour. It's often used with lolis and the like. I can't think of a single male anime character with pink hair. For an example of a pink haired girl Viola from Kiddy Grade.

I've seen male characters with pink, blue, green, and even purple hair.

Actually, I've seen ONE male character with pink hair--but he's on an anime that I don't dare mention, for fear of total pownage by the admins.

I know which anime you're referring to, Khaki.

Also, Katsushiro (sp?) from Samurai 7 has blue-green hair. And Ukyo has lavender hair. Both characters are male.

My aforementioned example Kiddy Grade represents every hair colour, many of them male. In Kiddy Grade there's a male character with blue, green, white, light blue, black and red. I know too Khaki. Shuichi from Gravitation, which i believe is on the do not discuss list not the do not mention list.

Kura Ookami wrote:I must say i disagree.

I think you are both right.

Hair color is primarily for character recognition. After all, there’s pretty much only one natural hair color in Japan. We would consider all the hair colors in Sailor Moon to be natural except for Ami (the most conservative of the Scouts dyes her hair? And the teachers at school don’t even say anything?) but to the general Japanese audience, Usagi may as well have pink or green hair.

Originally, that meant telling characters within the same anime apart. Telling animated characters apart can be tricky at times so giving them different hair colors or a costume that rarely if ever changes helps the audience keep things straight.

Popular anime, however, helped standardize which character archetypes had which color of hair. It became easier to establish characters of a certain type if you gave them the same hair color as a popular character of a different anime. It’s really just an extension of character recognition.

There are plenty of counter-examples, of course – especially in earlier anime before any such conventions began to materialize, but, especially with tertiary characters who don’t get a lot of character development, the correct hair color helps the audience understand the character faster.

Unlike a number of other Asian countries, Japan and China actually have a fair amount of variation in hair color, ranging from medium brown to black. In both cases, the reason is probably their long historic contact with Asian Caucasians. These have been around longer in China (coming out of Central Asia) but Japan had a fair amount of Russian blood injected into the Hokkaido population in the 17th thru 19th centuries, before Hokkaido was fully integrated into the Empire. It is actually possible (although very rare) for a family who thinks they are 'pure' Japanese blood to pop up with a blue-eyed or green-eyed child.

I have a Chinese friend from the western part of traditional China (the middle of the modern country) who has sandy brown-blond hair and hazel eyes. She has fully Han features, but distinctly Caucasian coloration. She says a lot of others in her ancestral village look that way, and they say they got it from "Barbarians" a long time ago.

Actually a lot of young people from numerous Asian countries die their hair brown to blonde colors. It's trendy, so to speak.

Well I happen to have a personal prejudice in favor of red heads like Flay from
Gundam Seed,Sakura from Tokko and Asuka from Evangelion.
Though some of my favorites like Yuki from Silent Mobius and Nami from
One Piece actually have orange colored hair.
