(I wasn't sure where to post this... move the thread if you wish)

The first pic is from the recently announced Mario Kart Wii. The second picture is from castle in the sky. The very second I laid my eyes on the screenshot, I thought "That's slagg's ravine from Castle in the Sky!!"

Maybe it's just a coincidence, but I think that nintendo might be snatching some ideas.

Just compare the pictures. The numerous smokestacks (cleverly changed to pipes in Mario Kart), there's the houses built on the sides of the canyon... and though not seen in the castle in the sky picture I posted... the supported railroad running through the middle of the canyon.

OHMIGOSH!

I SEE IT! I SEE THE COMPARISON!

*does the Anime makes a guest appearance in a video game dance*

Now I definitely have to buy Mario Kart Wii.

Great detective work. I had originally thought it was just some generic wild west town at first.

That is... pretty crazy, with the whole railroad chase scene in the movie too. Of course, the town is from earth and not from Laputa, but still...

I did and yes I saw the smokestacks and the building. But I think its coincidence, then anything.

Well, you have to consider that Nintendo is a Japanese company. And over there Ghibli is like our Disney in terms of popularity. So I could see this happening not only in this game but others too if you did some digging.

Yeah, I know that. But if they used too much of their ideas and didn't pay a fee to use that in the game. Ghibli could sue them for it.

Yeah, as much as it does bear some resemblances, I have to say that I'm inclined to agree with Roy on this one. I'm sure Nintendo's got a back to lawyers who would be on copyright infringement like white on rice, or like blood sucking leeches on. . . something with blood.

It does look similar, but not so similar that I'd call it intellectual theft.

Nah, it's not a Castle in the Sky reference. Not only does Castle in the Sky not have a monopoly on towns with railroads and smokestacks, but most of the buildings have a "W" on them, which probably stands for "Wario". As I recall, other Mario Kart games had similarly themed worlds for Wario's races.
