Azumanga Daioh and Yotsuba&! are both quite funny, though the latter is only available in manga. Still, it's hilarious. XD

If this thread is used for discussion of comedy, it will be allowed to exist aside from the recommendations thread.
Myself, I'll be up front: I have not yet found a comedy anime I actually find funny (Gin Tama is occasionally, but not consistently enough for me). So those of you with a wider watching in the sub-genre, do you have any suggestions? Intelligent humor is always better, and as a general guideline I do not find overreactions funny.

I'm afraid I'm of no help to you there. I tend to find more humor in series that are not deliberately in the "Comedy genre." Usually. Ouran is a notable exception for me, but it's more a parody of its own genre (I can appreciate almost anything that pokes fun at itself in a good humored way).

I find the humor in many light animes tends to be right up my alley, until it gets too "locker room". However, I think this thread is talking about animes which are first and foremost comedies, as opposed to ones which are firstly Light Fantasy and Light Romance (for example, my all-time favorite manga, 'Urusei Yatsura').
Let's see.... number one on my list would have to be "Cromartie High School". Which explains why there is an obscure reference to it in my signature. After that, I would say (in no particular order) "Excel Saga", "Pani Poni Dash", "Azumanga Daioh", and "SuperGALS" (the last one is arguably Light Romance).
I'm withholding judgement on two until I see more of them. One is "Best Student Council", which I've seen four episodes of, and I'm not sure where they're going with it. The other is "Dai Mahou Touge", which is hilarious, but they've done only one OVA. They could screw it up, big time. I will recommend the one OVA, though, especially if you would love seeing the 'Magical Girl' Anime genre viciously skewered with a vengeance.

Oops. I don't think that last one, "Dai Mahou Touge", is available in the US yet. Hope it gets here quick. The title translates as "Great Magical Divide".

Well, I've found Tenchi Muyo to be quite amusing most of the time. Also, if you liked Excel Saga, you would probably like FLCL (pronounced Furi Curi or Fooly Cooly, depending on if you're using the Japanese or English pronounciation). Just don't ask what it's about, very few people can give a coherant answer to that.

Well, Im not really sure if I should even say this. But in my opinion and Im sorry y'all would have to be Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo. Its just the fact that they use random stuff that makes it all worth while. I just watch it for the comedy though. A good medicine for the depressed.
Although short FLCL is pretty funny. Hehe, fuzzy eyebrows. And they do actually give a definition of Fooly Cooly in the show but its sorta hard to understand. Its were the show goes into manga form and the father starts talking.
Ohh but there are others. Like say Comic Party! The funniest part of that show is Taeshi(Sp?). And believe me there are other funny anime. But I can't think of them at the moment.

I have to confess that, aide from FLCL, I've NEVER been amused by a deliberately "comedic" anime. I think Fish and Chips summed it up pretty well, I'm usually more entertained by other genres that just happen to have some humor snuck in.

Comedy Anime tends to be over-the-top, a trait best handled carefully and sparingly (and it usually isn't). Series with different priorities tend to have better balance when it comes to humor.

Can we also include comedy episodes of non-comedy series like Inuyasha?
As far as the subject itself goes,I've rather enjoyed what I have seen of
Azumanga Daioh! along with Ah!My Goddess,Bobobo-bobo-bobo,Excel Saga,
Love Hina,The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and even found Colorful hilarious
(although for that you need a certain sense of humor since it's all gags around
fanservice,not for those under 15).
Cromartie was just too weird for my tastes(and I LIKE Bobobo!).

This post will be a bit negative. Think of it as merely clarifying my tastes.

Really? What I've seen of the manga (not much) didn't strike me that way, but parody is generally close to the line between satire and cliche, anyway.
Aleolus wrote:Well, I've found Tenchi Muyo to be quite amusing most of the time.
It is probably just easiest to say that no one else should bring themselves any closer to carpal tunnel by typing a recommendation of anything similar.

Is that a subdivision of the series? An OAV of some sort?

Bobobo doesn't work for me. Randomness is funny because it is out of context but Bobobo has no context whatsoever. I'd also really rather Beauty not comment on every single thing that happens. That might be a funny gag for... half an episode. I stubbornly read the manga every time I receive a new Shonen Jump (because I
paid for it) and never really enjoy it that much.
animedude90 wrote:Although short FLCL is pretty funny. Hehe, fuzzy eyebrows. And they do actually give a definition of Fooly Cooly in the show but its sorta hard to understand. Its were the show goes into manga form and the father starts talking.
Can someone who has both seen the anime and read the manga tell me if they are roughly the same? I have done the latter, and it didn't even strike me as
trying to be funny.

That seems a fair assessment to me. I actually enjoy the comedy genre in most mediums, but anime is not one for the reason you listed. What you say about non-comedy series is very true: the thing that has made me laugh hardest from an anime is actually from Gungrave, a decidedly non-comedy series.

I'd say there's a definite borderline between satire and parody, personally. The former tends to be more cunning, clever, underhanded, and so on, the later being a little more casual, light-hearted, and obvious. Really, just depends on your mood. Probably not to your taste, though. And I've never read the Manga, so I can't speak for it.

The majority of people I know who enjoy the Anime hate the Manga. I'm not a fan of either, really.

My reaction to the FLCL manga was "
what were they
thinking?"
This is one of those cases of a manga being done from the anime rather than the other way around. The thing is, the Mangaka does not seem to have had a clue what the viewers were finding so great about the anime.
FLCL is a bildungsroman at it's heart, what some people call a 'growing-up story'. The mangaka understood this and tried to bring that story out. The problem is, the main character is going through his development under extraordinarily strange conditions, which are the source of the comedy. The mangaka did not understand that, and failed to make those conditions the focus of the manga as they had been in the anime.
The result was a complete failure to capture the magic.
In two episodes of the anime, it turns into a manga on-screen. You have to see it to know what this means. Probably some of the funniest stuff in the series, if you can manage to follow it (FLCL is very bipolar. It swings from wonderfully poignant, angsty studies of emotion to intensely manic. The manga sections are manic.) Personally, I think whoever was doing the 'manga pages' for those sections should have been selected to do the actual manga. It looked like he really got what the series was supposed to be.
My best advice for FLCL the manga is: it makes very good kindling for your upcoming July 4th cookouts.
Nuff said.

its something like that its a short 12 episode miniseries that focuses on the High school comedy part of Full Metal Panic so no arm slaves. But there are some priceless moments so its worth watching if your interested in the series. Got to say the Rugby episode beats all.

I have to agree too. Even Yotsuba&! which is perhaps the most comedic manga/anime I own of all time. It still has depth and other themes to it as well. I actually can almost never take total comedy in anything just due to my tastes. So I'm going to join Fish and Chips in being neutral.

The thing with the FLCL manga is the same problem with the Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi manga, they're trying to do in 2 issues what takes 6 or more
episodes to develop. Also the MSAA manga tends to be a bit more risque in places than the anime.
Also what really makes the FLCL anime is the music of The Pillows.

Ah, that's informative. I should actually see the anime in full before judging it, but I'm generally somewhat negatively inclined. This is mostly because the analysis of it I have seen strikes me as fabrication (of the irritating variety at that). But like I said, I reserve judgment.

Tenchi Muyo (any incarnation)
Azumanga Daioh
Naruto
Cowboy Bebop

Of course it all depends on your sense of humor as well what anime you may find hilarious. Some like Kimagure Orange Road and Love Hina have a more romantic flair to the comedy, whilst others like Dual and Tenchi have certain situations that lend them to the comedic. Then others such as Inuyasha may have
comedy scenes or episodes that are added to lift the overall seriousness of the
series and lighten the tension from time to time.
There are some jokes and gags that some people might be able to get and others not.
Also some people might find some series objectionable whilst others might end up rolling on the floor after watching.
