Ishinomori-sensei, I feel so, so sorry for you right now. Your life masterwork has been...
Folks. I am just heartbroken, over an old, old classic that has been tragically twisted out of shape into something I don't recognize. I refer to the great "CYBORG 009" which is never EVER to be confused with this new series, "Cyborg 009-1". I just watched the first episode of this travesty.
I'm not even sure it can be argued that it bears any relationship at all to Ishinomori-sensei's work, except that it seems to also deal with cyborg secret agents.
The fanservice was hovering just below my tolerance level until the flagrantly unnecessary lesbian love scene. I think that's when my patience ran out. I kept watching for a little while longer, but I discovered I was too angry at that point to even follow the story, so I stopped it. Discovered that the next episode of Mezzo had also shown up on On Demand, so I flipped over to that instead.
I'm sure I might have liked this series (I can usually ignore stuff like the above) if it weren't supposedly an 'update' of the great classic that arguably began modern manga as we know it. There's some things you just shouldn't do. One of them is rewrite a masterwork. Weave in modern drawing methods, update the character designs... but don't rip the master's work up and write your own story into it. Don't borrow someone else's success to promote your own work.
Eh. Others might like this. I won't be watching any more of it. I just needed to vent.

Sorry to tell you this, but this is one of Shotaro Ishimori's life work.
009-1 is base from the Shotaro Ishimori's manga 009-1 that was done in the late 60's.
Don't think this is a new verison of Cyborg 009, because its not.
Just like the manga, it was a stand alone series.

T-That can't be true. That really was true in the 1960's?
Oh my poor poor Cyborg 009. *hugs the true version* Even if he did do it, I don't wish to accept it.

It was a six volume manga and ran from 1967 to 1970
If you want to check this, go to ANN and look up manga for 009-1 and it will show it.

Speaking of Cyborg 009 was it cancelled because of poor ratings or did CN only have x number of episodes to air when they had the rights to it?

It was cancelled because of poor ratings. Last ep that aired was #48.
They only had three or so more eps to go, before the end. But it did so bad that CN just took it off the air.
FYI: the series that CN aired was Cyborg 009 The Cyborg Soldier, which was a remake and aired in Japan in 2001.

Just so I can make sure, are we talking about the anime that aired on Cartoon Network late at night with Joshua Seth playing the title character?

From mitsuki lover question, yes.
Cyborg 009 The Cyborg Soldier was the only one to be put on dvd over here. But there is only first 8 ep have been put on dvd and that was in 2004.
The first seires, Cyborg 009 was done in 1968 and then they made a remake in 1979 and it was called Cyborg 009.
Then they did one more remake and they name it Cyborg 009 The Cyborg Soldier and was the one that they aired on CN.

I was talking about the dvd volumes for Cyborg 009, not 009-1.

Yeah. Cyborg 009 and 009-1 are different anime. The first is shonen, the other's seinen. Be warned.

Right you are. I mean, that certain lesbian scene even turned me off, and I sat through Ikki Tousen.

usually any anime thats baised of a manga is going to have less content than the manga does. I even bet if you were to find an original copy of 009-1 there will be more content in there than the first ep of the series.
reason being that the artist are able to put more in a manga than what they can show on a series...

I looked up Cyborg 009-1 at Anime Planet's Recommendation Database.According to what they had on it it takes place in a future where the Cold War is still going on and the main character is an Agent for the Western Bloc.
