According to Anime News Network:
A presentation for Marvelous Entertainment's 2006-2007 financial report reveals that a sequel is in the works for its hit animated television series Gunslinger Girl about cybernetically enhanced girl assassins. The first 13 episodes were produced at a cost of 13 million yen (about US$110,000) each from 2003 to 2004.

hmm..

Follow-Up: Marvelous Entertainment has edited its financial report presentation that initially reported on a "Gunslinger Girl continuation in production." The section on its music and video department no longer includes the entry on Gunslinger Girl, and the remaining entries have been moved to partially obscure the removal.

Though the second qoute cited seems to suggest that any celebration would be a bit

Very! It has been reported on ANN and animeonline. So, I wouldn't get too happy just yet.

I know this is a bit of a grave-dig, but I figured it's better than making a whole new thread..
