Weird/Hilarious anime edits.

Postby Epidemic Xero » Fri Apr 27, 2007 2:18 pm

I was just thinking about some of the weird/baffling/hilarious edits that they've had to do to some anime when aired on US TV. ("Toonami edits", for example.)
I do feel that it's necessary sometimes, but sometimes it's just....What?! O_o So, I thought I'd make a thread where we could list such moments in the history of TV anime-edits.

YuYu Hakusho had some hilarious Toonami-edits. (It was such a bad idea to switch it to Toonami in the first place....I mean...don't all those edits cost them hundreds, maybe thousands of dollars? O_o And the show only got more dark and violent as it went on.... It just seems like such an unnecessary hassle.)
*In one of the first episodes, Kurama throws blood into Hiei's face. In the Toonami-version, Kurama just slaps him.
*Originally, Yuusuke discovers that one of his enemies is a transvestite when he, err...."checks" him in battle. In the Toonami version, he made up some bizarre explanation to avoid the gender-confusing subject. It was something like "Look carefully... She's....faking her injuries! She's not actually hurt!" "What?! NO WAY!!" Such awkward altered dialog in that scene.....^ ^;;

*In Naruto, I thought it was interesting how they changed the Tsukuyomi (am I spelling that right?) "crucifixes" to big rectangular boards, even though they're only big Ts, not actual crosses. But, I guess the similarity was just too obvious.

*In Blue Gender, there was some scene that apparently bordered on being Hentai. In this case, I'm glad the edit was made, but it was still odd-looking nonetheless. That kiss just went on....and on.....and on.....strangely recycling footage.....O_o;;;;

I think it's funny where weapons like guns are digitally removed, yet their hand still looks like it's holding a trigger... or at least pointing to the victim very threateningly :/

Haha, yes!

And how 'bout the happy space-blaster edits? I haven't seen much Gundam Seed, but I notice how they paint neon stripes and dots on the guns.... I guess it makes them less threatening? ^ ^

Aaah, here it is:

Apparently, this is commonly referred to as the "disco gun" edit. o_o

Sanji smokes lollypops, and the cast of Yu-Gi-Oh kills people by making a gun with their hands.

The first season of Digimon has this one pretty funny editing moment. Shortly after returning to the real world, the kids are trying to thumb a ride, resulting in several awkward edits. In the original, Matt unintentionally flags down a major blond in a major car, only to be too embarrassed to say anything when she stops. In the American version the cut the woman out and he just... sort of stands there. Shortly afterwards Sora and Mimi flag a total stranger who gives them a ride, a stranger who magically becomes Sora's long lost cousin for the English version (which looks obviously wrong because Sora sits in the back of the vehicle while MIMI sits up front with the driver)

Hitchhiking is bad bad bad and illegal... especially in fictional cartoons, I mean, what are they thinking?

As for the One Piece edit, I've seen it before, and I "..." once again... it's sad, very sad :/

And yes, of COURSE neon strips and buttons make guns non threatening. I mean, it makes you think the gun will start going "piyuu! piyuu!" instead of "BAM!"... yet containing the same results :/

Yeah, it did look funny. But there was alot of stuff that was edited from Blue Gender that would make you wonder why it was pick up by Adult Swim back then.

I was wondering how long it would take until someone posted that One Piece edit.

My favorite is actually when Zoro is slashed by Mihawk. It isn't that major of an edit, but they removed the blood and so it looks like Zoro didn't even get hit. Without the injury the entire scene seems a bit funny, from Zoro screaming in pain to everyone else's concern. Plus I couldn't help but think "Aaaaah! You ripped my shirt!"

Notable is the removal of massive nosebleeds in Naruto. That means that some people in early episodes just randomly launch themselves backward when confronted with the Sexy no Jutsu. But frankly, it makes about as much realistic sense as a nosebleed in the first place.

One that sticks out in my head is from Outlaw Star's CN run. I know they edited a lot of the nudity, which I'm quite grateful for, but they nixed the blood, too.

In one scene where Gene gets hurt, Jim runs over to help him and pulls his hand away and goes "What's this?!" In the original his hand is bloody...on Cartoon Network, Jim was staring in abject horror at his own hand.

Well of course I know that one! Also remember in another One Piece episode when Dr. Kureha was drinking alcohol in the Japanese version, but in the English version Dalton told Kureha "Don't drink so much bug juice! It's loaded with sugar!"

Actually, I just noticed now that his clothes changed colour too! Not sure if it's just the lighting of the screen, or if 4kids thought it would be funnier to have the pansy wear purple clothes. *shrugs*

4Kids did a lot of dubbing in Sonic X. In episode five, when Sonic and Knuckles are fighting, Amy smashes Eggman's robot, and he ends up yelling at her. In the dub, they changed it to Eggman yelling, "Get him, Knuckles!" but he was facing Amy's direction instead of watching the fight (???). TV screen on his little flying thing to watch the fight, perhaps?

Also, in the episode where they're at a haunted castle and Amy gets possessed, Sonic originally smacked Amy in the back of the head and the ghost came out her ear, but in the dub, she just fell into his arms and the ghost came out. (???) What, is the ghost afraid of Sonic??

I am greatful for one edit though, from a second season episode. Knuckles was chasing two robots and he followed them into a stripclub, I think. They left the whole scene out and even erased the lipstick marks from both robots when they returned to Eggman's ship.

But one thing that my brother is particularly upset about is when they removed "Live and Learn" from the background in the last Shadow episode in season two. They replaced it with some "overused" (I guess) piece from any dramatic scene they might've had before in this series.

Finally, Cheese (a CHAO, of all things) is given a dub in EVERY SINGLE EPISODE. He doesn't even speak Japanese, let alone English!! The cute chao noises that they make in Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 would've been just fine!! Now he sounds like a Pokemon!!!

I gotta get my hands on some original Japanese episodes...

Both of the first 2 seasons are around... 3rd well, it's an extremely hard process to sub so it's almost impossible to find :/

Heh, one edit I KNOW they took out from Sonic X is when Sonic blurted out, in english, "s***!" Now, Shadow swears in the game in Japanese, but to hear Sonic say it in english out of nowhere on the one ep was almost amusing... According to the translator notes, to the Japanese it's like saying "shoot" or whatever, and sounded better in english... or something along those lines.

Sometimes they don't actually edit the Japanese but try to write around it, with goofy results. There was an episode of Digimon where T.K. and Patamon read a note written in "Digi-code", which looks ASTONISHINGLY like Japanese.

I know there's a bunch of Inuyasha ones that I read about on the internet. Lemme see, there was one episode where Inuyasha is attacking in Naraku and in one frame his shirt is red, then for a split second is white.
Also one where Kouga's wristband thing changes arms.

Heh, foreign languages must be an animation taboo or something^^ Funny how in some anime, they place it in Japan where others they... completely change the town names and everything. Kinda like how (I believe) the regions and town names in Pokemon were actual places, but then changed to make it "easier" or whatever, and non-realistic. I didn't even realize for years that the region maps on the game, which I thought were from a made-up land, looked strangely like real places in Japan...

That would be moreso the actual Japanese animators though. Kindal ike this one pic I once saw on ANN (on Hey Answerman! I believe) where in one screen on Naruto, they forgot to draw his head!

My favorite was the painted on swimsuits in Tenchi Muyo! When I first saw the series, I had no idea it was such an adult show, and so I blithely claimed it as a favorite (well, the dubs WERE pretty funny to me at 14).

Then I saw an AMV and had my eyes pop out. O_O!
