I went on the media blasters website lately, and i came across an anime called GaoGaiGar. i then looked some more into. from what i can tell it's a super-robot anime from the 90s. It looks a lot like a cross between Voltron and oldschool Transformers, both which i have a nostalgiac soft spot for. So like, i'm thinking about grabbing me a copy of vol. 1. is it any good? how's it for content?

I know Josh Christopher really likes it.

Yes, I've seen the entire thing and the OVA. It's a really great series, but the first half of the anime really... isn't. It's still required to watch to get all of the character backgrounds, but it really doesn't pick up until around the mid-twenties, episode-wise. The OVA is all kindsa radtastic, though.

It's definitely very old-school, and it's delightfully angst-free. Content-wise, didn't encounter anything worse than a few skimpy outfits, but those never bothered me. The OVA is a whole 'nother story, though.

K, thanks. Well, i haven't really bought a good anime lately, so maybe some time i'll go grab me a volume one. Sounds like something i'd like. Btw, how is the OVA different content-wise?

I'm about to start watching this series (well, either this or King Gainer-- haven't decided yet). Thanks for the heads-up about the beginning of the series, Joshua Christopher-- it makes it a lot easier to get through the slow parts when I know they're coming.

Don't get me wrong, it's still a fun show. The first half is just somewhat formulaic.

The OVA is a bit different content-wise. Although, only the first few volumes of the TV series are out now, and there are about 49-episodes. The 8-ep OVA has some nudity and a lot stronger violence, and a bit of bizarre sexual stuff.

I found King Gainer kinda meh. I'd recommend GaoGaiGar to you, it's really quite good. I actually downloaded the entire series a while before it was ever licensed (and I mean, really, who ever saw this one getting licensed?), so it helped get through the more boring parts, rather than waiting volume to volume. Really, there are some fairly interesting episodes in the first half, but as I mentioned, a lot of them are fairly formulaic. Still, watch it, as they do a good job of providing a lot of texture and building all of the characters.

The second half of the series is entirely worth the first half, and it has one of the most perfect endings for a TV series. Also, I've never been one to get all angry over subtitles and dubs, but I'll make an exception]Watch it subtitled. The dub is okay, but the Japanese version is absolutely rockin' and crazy.

Oh, and the theme song will be stuck in your head for all eternity.

It's not really that bad, but the OVA isn't even licensed or anything yet, and probably won't be for a while. You really have to watch the OVA after the series, though, it's fantastic.

Hmm, i'll consider. but for now, like you say, it's not even licensed. Hmmm, i'm thinking about stopping by my local hastings and seeing if they have volume one. thanks for the heads up!

I saw the first two episodes of this last night. So far it looks pretty good to me. It reminds me of this other yuusha series I saw called Might Gaine, which I also liked.
I kinda like how GaoGaiGar doesn't work perfectly. Like, every other mecha that transforms never has any problems doing so, right? So when the final fusion messed up those few times, I was like, "Huh...that's refreshing."

Yeah, they tend to have a lot of kinks to work out. There are actually a few other instances of stuff like this.
Even though the beginning parts of the series are largely formulaic, monster-of-the-week stuff, I will definitely compliment the creators on doing a very good job of building a lot of texture along the way. They did a great job pacing all of the new character introductions and new weapons, so if you stick with it until the second half, you're really going to love it.

Also, Goldion Hammer!

To use the old cliche, you haven't seen anything yet. There's giant robots that play giant robot guitars, a police car that transforms into a ninja robot, a giant space ark that turns into a robot, and this.
