I would assume the two largest are Anime-Expo and Otakon.

That would explain the hellishly long lines at AX.

I went to #8. I was getting pretty claustrophobic with all of the people there, but that's nothing on the other cons! Too bad I didn't actually get to stay the whole time, though perhaps it's for the better. Anime cons have their high points, but also many low points just begging to lead people into sin.

Just curious, I know they got the paid numbers. That's obvious. But how did they tally the total? Does that include the staff? Or people sneaking in?

"Believers do not pray with the view of informing God about things unknown to Him, or of exciting Him to do His duty, or of urging Him as though He were reluctant. I know that for anime expo there are numerous ways to get in without paying to attend. These include, but are not limited to:

Industry invite: If you work in the anime, manga, or gaming industry it is possible to get a special "Industry" pass. It's free.

Staff: All staffers, be they volunteers or otherwise, get free passes.

Vendors: Vendors pay for booth space. They are given special "Vendor" passes.

I would venture to guess that the "Paid" only includes guests who obtained their passes the old fashioned way. With everyone else simply being considered part of the total.

*Shrugs* It is just a guess though. It's hard to imagine Staff alone being just under 8,000.

If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things."

I was thinking that too and I was about to ask that question at AWA message board, but someone beat me to it.

The ones that say paid is really the total number of how many people and paid for passes to get in and the ones that bought passes by pre-register.

The other ones added the number of people paid to get in and then they added the staff, dealers, guests and the complimentary passes.

One of the Directors of AWA posted their total number people that came to the con in Dec and they said this,

8,949 people attended AWA this year. That is our official count, and may be quoted.

Our counting method is one count per paid person. Two and Three-day membership people count as 1 person, in other words.

We don't count staffers, dealers, convention guests, comp (free) passes, hotel staffers and vendors, or those of you who sneaked in without paying.

So, some conventions were counting everyone.

So, they count number of people that came, staffers, vandors, security, pizza delivery guy, the people that were standing outside in the parking lot that did nothing, the guy that was standing in the hall that was picking his nose and didn't know there was a con going on.

So, some cons used fuzzy math.

Wing hates fuzzy math! Its hard to get the hair out of pencil, when trying to do homework with fuzzy math.
