Good review, though personally I'd say Nudity and Sexual Content should both be bumped to the 10 level.

Some fun facts: The movie had to be edited to receive an R rating in America, and received the strictest non-porn rating by every country that showed it. The film was originally conceived as a live-action feature, but became an anime when several backers abruptly pulled out in pre-production (animation is cheaper than live action in Japan). Director Satoshi Kon completely redid the script from the original.

I thought it was because their studio was damaged by an earthquake

I think 8-9 is okay. It's not a hentai movie nor does the character actually engage in any sort of real sexual activity.

Never heard that one. The story I heard was because the backing fell through they didn't have the money to do live action. Of course if they had done it with live action, it probably would have been long forgotten.

As for the rating, I thought it was on par with Ninja Scroll or Doomed Megapolis, though I guess everyone has a different POV. My own perspective was since hentai isn't reviewed here, a 10 is the max before it reaches hentai levels.

But it was a good review and I was just putting in my 2¢. Hope it didn't come off as criticism.

I went a head and bumped "sexual content" upto a 9, since I had intended to that anyways. But, in the end, while the review approver does have the right to change the quick index choices, we mostly leave it upto the personal discretion of the reviewer. Even if the index isn't exactly what we all think it should be, as long as the body is detailed enough, the review should still provide an accurate reflection of the film.

Thank you, however, AH for your input. It's valuable to know what other members think about reviews. If someone strongly felt a review misrepresented a film, I would want him/her to say as much-- so, thank you. You didn't sound "critical" to me. You simply disagree respectfully with the reviewer. :P

That's okay by me. Better safe than sorry.

It seems to be a more or less fair review, going by the comments. It was a very good movie though IMO.

I agree, it's one of the few anime on my list of classics. Though one I think for people who can understand the idea of serious anime and the validity of addressing mature themes. (So probably not for people who think anime is evil ;) )
