Tenchi, Tenchi, Tenchi...

I remember seeing this great show on Toonami (and yes, I know the dvds are unedited). I want to start buying, but I don't know where to start. Is there any Tenchi buff who can tell me the order of the series, OVAs, movies, spin-offs, bla bla bla...? Thankies.
Zipo.

@_@... sure you wanna do that?!
My Anime Insider has the ENTIRE timeline of it and there's ALOT (including a bunch of novels etc. that aren't even licensed yet). I don't exactly have the time to copy it out but man is there ever alot!
A couple little tidbits I can give you though: Shin Tenchi Muyo ("The All-New Tenchi Muyo") manga has JUST ended in Japan but also a new anime series is JUST begining, which is another Sasami series. And... not sure if the 3rd Tenchi OVA is still being made in Japan, but the first 3 eps are out on DVD by FUNi.

I think the manga is not canon
the anime came out in this roughly this order:
- OVA eps 1-13 OVA Series I and II. Also at this time, The Mihoshi special
- Tenchi Universe
- Tenchi Muyo In Love
- Magical Girl Pretty Sammy
- Tenchi: Daughter of Darkness
- Tenchi Muyo in Love II: Tenchi the Movie III (AKA Tenchi Forever-- which is how long the movie seemed to last
- New Tenchi Muyo (Tenchi in Tokyo)
- OVA Series 3
The only things that link to each other are Universe and Movies 1 and 3 (and Mihoshi Special). The others are retellings similar to what Pioneer/Geneon would do to El Hazzard

This was one thing that confused me like in AI, what exactly is the second OVA series, or was it just the second part of the 13 eps or whatever?

Not entirely, GXP is a direct sequel to the events of the OAVs. But other than that and what AH said, Zipo, the series have nothing to do with each other.

Oooooh! You see, I thought for the longest time GXP was a TV series.
Well, there's another thing cleared up!

GXP IS a TV series, Tenshi.
But it follows the continuity of the OAVs, not Universe.

Blast! I forgot GXP. You are correct there.

As I understand it, it was eps 1-7 as OVA series 1 and 8-13 as OVA series 2

Ok, NOW I get it!
Yeah I thought the 2 sets of OVAs were pretty much the "one" OVA that Geneon has out.

There were also two different Pretty Sammy spin-offs: Magical Project S which was an OAV and Magical Girl Pretty Sammy (as mentioned above) which was a TV series. A third Pretty Sammy project has just been announced to come out in 2006 and will include Washu as her principle and Mihoshi as her teacher.

Well, at least now they're slightly cheaper with Geneon's Signature Series.

The manga's actually hilarious to read. It's also a good starting point to familiarize yourself with the characters.I have the Tenchi Forever movie and the best selling point is that it revolves mainly around Ayeka and Ryoko.

Does anyone else think that Tenchi is one of the most convoluted franchises out there?

It's kinda like .hack. They both have novels, manga, anime, OVAs/movies, and video games. And well, they just keep adding on all the time! Although, .hack keeps a continous storyline in a different order and Tenchi, well, different each time!

Notice that neither are smash hits. Maybe people like franchises that they can get their minds around a little more easily?

I think they become franchises because they are so successful. These things do get milked for all their worth. Of course Pioneer in Japan became synonymous with Tenchi clone because of the great number of series they did that re-did the basic harem anime over and over.

@_@... No series should be this complicated.

Well, it gets easier when you realize they pretty much have nothing to do with each other.

I love Tenchi. It's one of my all-time faves. I had a crush on Sasami for a while
.
AH: I was wondering, how many volumes of the Pretty Sammy series are there anyway? Is that any good? It's one of the few Tenchi cartoons I haven't seen yet.
Oh, and I didn't like that Tokyo version. Ryo-oki as a mechanical cat is just wrong.

A random thought occured to me: the Tenchi series CAN be confusing with all its alternate retelligns etc. ...mostly the fact that I got SO confused when Tenchi's mom was named Achika in the first movie and Kiyone everywhere else (which makes it even MORE confusing with Miyoshi's partner named Kiyone... but is only featured in certain series' :/)

Hmm, I think 26 eps are listed on two volumes for the TV show. There was also an OVA series and the Mihoshi special.
It's pretty complicated

Personally, I thought it was one of the funniest titles to come out of the Tenchi franchise.

Want something even more confusing? How about this: Ayeka is probably his aunt (where's a barf bag smiley?) And what about Sasami, wouldn't she be like his cousin?

Ayeka is Tenchi's great aunt, I think. She was Yosho's sister, and Yosho is Tenchi's grandfather. I really don't remember the relation of Sasami to Tenchi.
It actually isn't really confusing. In the second episode of Muyo, when Tenchi and Ayeka are alone, she says "Here on Earth, you may find it odd to marry your brother." They did it to keep the royal bloodline pure. Also remember, they aren't humans, they're Juraians, and as such, they obviously don't have the same problem with birth defects as we do.

Sasami would have the same relation to Tenchi that Ayeka has because Ayeka and Sasami are sisters.

Actully, I think they would both be his great half-aunts. Sasami and Ayeka have a different mother than Yosho. although I'm not sure if it's a relavent distinction from Tenchi's point of view ^^
