Kirby? Rockman EXE?

Postby Azier the Swordsman » Sun Nov 02, 2003 6:53 pm

Kirby and Rockman (Megaman US) are among my favorite video game characters. (Sonic is my fave) I'm wondering if the anime based on these games (Kirby, right back at you; Rockman EXE) are any good. I'm intersted in possibly buying the import DVD's sometime in the distant future, (I don't care much for dubs) problem is, Japanese DVD's are expensive, and I don't want to buy them and dislike them. I've heard bad reviews about Kirby saying it is for 'toddlers'. Rockman EXE I have no clue about.

Well, I haven't seen the original Japanese versions but I have seen some of both dubs.

Kirby, does seem to be geared toward younger kids. The plot is pretty simplistic and Kirby in the anime is essentially a little kid himself as he was awoken prematurely from his hyperspace sleep or whatever it's called. It does have many of the characters from the video games(King DeDeDe, Metaknight, etc.) in it. I don't really know how much was changed from the original version.

Rockman.EXE also called Megaman:NT Warrior in the dub is based on the Game Boy video games. It stars a boy named Lan and his NET Navi, Megaman, as they compete in fights where NET Navi fights NET Navi and they battle several terrorist groups. It's a decent show from what I've seen, at least if you like Megaman and enjoy the Pokemon-esque type shows, however I've been disappointed in many of the fights so far although the dub may have toned some of those down. The dub also added some typical childish dialogue and altered many of the scenes from the original.

I really can't help you more then that.

I'll probably check out Rockman.EXE eventually, my only gripe is the DVD's have two episodes each, for over 40 U.S. dollars each.

Do you know about Sonic X? That's an anime based on your favorite.

More on topic: I didn't really like the Kirby anime at all. The allegations of being aimed at toddlers are quite true, from what little I saw before stopping. But what did I expect, a dark, gritty anime about a giant pink blob who sucks up things?

On the other hand, I'd somewhat recommend Rockman.exe. Not an adult anime, really, but if you're fine with Digimon and the like, you won't have a problem with it. What I've seen wasn't half bad, and there's always the bonus of getting to see Protoman be cool.

I love Sonic X. It's a decent show, I've imported the first few DVD's from Japan. I don't like the dub though.

I've watched a few episodes, but for some reason I just stopped caring after a while. Then again, I was seeing the dub. What didn't you like about it? Or was it the typical voice actors thing?

The music was completely changed, (which changes the mood of the show in my opinion). And several translation errors are sacttered throughout the show. The voice actors are okay, I do wish they would have been the same ones from the game. I will be writing a full review on Sonic X in a few weeks, I'll explain everything in greater detail.

Love both shows. Sad that Kirby got so horribly dubbed.
