(okay I don't know why it posted when I hadn't even finished the title...)

Hey everyone Downunder; SBS 10pm Thursday night!!!
SBS is finally showing an ongoing (hopefully) anime series of Ghost in a Shell, stand alone complex, followed this Thursday by Princess Blade there after.

We havn't had any anime on TV since NGE and that was back in '99, so enjoy free to air anime for a change!!!

Disclaimer; Ghost and Princess Blade are like MA and R respectivley I think, so be aware of that, I havn't seen either but I stocked that SBS is finally showing some aniem again.

Anyway, its a pity that they aren't showing something other than GitS... like FMP or such.
Just a side note: SBS was playing BGC:2040 a few years ago (this was a few yrs after NGE). I saw one or two episodes, but unfortunately it was on too late for a (then) school girl to watch

Ghost is dubbed, but Blade is probably subbed, knowing sbs.

Yeah but you guys have catoon network and adult swim. We have nothing! SBS is this tiny little liberal, world movies channel and they play stuff very rarely

Actually Ghost in the Shell series one is rated M15+ and Princess Blade is AV15+ which is equivalent to an MA15+ on dvd or at the cinema. Yeah!

Well, I watched it... GITS:SAC is pretty darn good!. The animation quality is great. I didn't see much of Princess Blade (I fell asleep actually, but not because it wasn't good but it was being taped anyhow.

Yeah GITS was pretty good (how good was the music, Yoko Kanno, and the opening credits and scene), I'm looking forward to this ever week now. But Princess Blade wasn't that good I thought... couple of nice choeregoraphed fights but there wasn't much of a plot... and the ending sucked, enjoyable never the less.

Ghost in the Shell was quite good, haven't seen Princess Blade yet. GitS is on again tonight. The music was cool, but very different to what I'm used too.

MOVIE - ANIMATION - PORCO ROSSO

The first of the Miyazaki films in the genre of Japanese Anime, Porco Rosso is set in Italy in the early 1930s where air pirates, bounty hunters and high flyers of all sorts rule the skies. The most cunning and skilled of these pilots is Porco Rosso, a man cursed with the head of a pig after watching the spirits of the pilots rise to the heavens after they were killed in the last air battle he fought in. He now makes a living taking jobs, such as rescuing those kidnapped by air pirates. Donald Curtis, Porco's rival in the air and in catching the affections of women, provides a constant challenge to the hero, culminating in a hilarious, action packed finale.

*EDIT* Looks like SBS is running a series on Miyazaki films for the next month or so! Even better!

Yeah, every Wednesday night for the next month theres going to be a Miyazaki film, in light of Howls Moving Castle release, (they did a similar kind of thing with Stanley Kirbit movies; Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket etc)

So now we have Wednesday and Thursday (late though) nights of anime.

And btw, the second episode of GitS was pretty cool I reckon. The animation for the fact that its a tv series is very good, and the music rocks... its been done by Yoko Kanno (of Bebop fame) after all.

The second episode was very cool. More entertaining then the first I reckon. Pretty weird though.

Zane - yes, the first word 'Oi' got my attention.

Well, looks like I missed it. About the only TV I watch is the weather report each evening. I got comics to read, video games to play and Lego to sort. Too much stuff on for TV..

Hey Ultra, I can't remember if I've ever really said hi or not.

Its not to late to watch the series, or the movies on wednesday either, so you can still jump the bandwagon and enjoy them too

(And if you can make it to NTE or Canberra early December, Talame told me that she told you, then do come along, it will be good fun.)

I'm actually going to be meeting up with Ultra this weekend! This'll be my first meeting with a CAAer. Can't wait for the NTE either That should be great fun!

Were you guys able to watch Porco Rosso? Hopefully, because it was really good and funny aswell. It didn't really have to whole trademark randomness of his later movies, spirited away and howls moving castle, like this one had an understandable plot. I really enjoyed it. How funny were the pirates, the whole movie was well done. It also was very clean and didn't have random sorcery and spirits floating around.
The Ghibli documentary was pretty lame though I thought, don't know if the directors really knew what they wanted to say, but put a whole bunch of stuff they found together, the forrest bit, the art exphibtion etc.

And tonight we have GitS episode 3.

Title changed, hopefully satisfactorally.

I thought the documentary was quite interesting. I didn't watch the movie, but I did tape it to watch later. Should be good. Also will watch Ghost in the Shell later too (Alias was on).

Laputa: Castle in the Sky is on 10:00pm (SBS) next Wednesday

Nice to see they are playing more down under! I thought SBS would have gotten on that sooner...
What is Princess Blade btw?

Its a martial arts type Japanese movie. With extravagant sword fights, stunts and minimal plot.

I watched Porco Rosso today and thought it was good, but not great. I didn't really enjoy the animation style of this one or the weird punching scene towards the end, but the story was very good, loved the era it was set in, the little girls being kidnapped by the pirates, that tomboy engineering girl and many other things.

It was quite a funny movie and many of the characters were very likeable but Porco Rosso just lacked that something (a decent dogfight or something a bit more epic towards the end - I was expecting an anime version of Biggles maybe).
Overall it was a good anime movie, but Spirited Away is still better.

A Hayao Miyazaki film – in the genre of Japanese anime. A thousand years have passed since the violent collapse of industrial civilisation. Small pockets of humanity survive on the fringes of a vast polluted forest, inhabited by giant mutated insects, of which the Ohmu, are the greatest threat. The Valley of the Wind is a small community of humans protected by sea breezes from the toxic spores. Their young princess, Nausicaä, tries to understand, rather than destroy the Toxic Jungle. The peaceful life of the valley is threatened when the Torumekian princess, Kushana, arrives with her army. She plans to destroy the jungle and at the same time she is waging war against the kingdom of Pejite, another small pocket of human survivors.

A Hayao Miyazaki film – in the genre of Japanese anime. Kiki, a young witch, has turned thirteen and according to the ancient tradition she must leave home to find her own place in the world. She flies her broom to a coastal town where she finds a room above a local bakery, run by Mrs Osono, and sets up a delivery service. Despite a few misadventures, Kiki is doing well until one day she discovers that her powers have disappeared, she cannot fly her broomstick and she can no longer communicate with her cat Jiji. Ursula, a painter Kiki has met on one of her delivery runs, explains about artistic blocks and how something similar may have possibly affected Kiki.

MOVIE - ANIMATION - SPIRITED AWAY
(SEN TO CHIHIRO NO KAMIKAKUSHI)
Directed by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki, this film won numerous awards including the Best Animated Feature Academy Award, the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival and the Best Film at the San Francisco Film Festival. Chihiro and her family are on their way to their new house in the suburbs, on their way, they stumble upon a tunnel and Chihiro's father decides it is a shortcut. They walk through and discover a place that looks like a deserted theme park and an open-air restaurant filled with food but with no workers or customers present. Chihiro's parents gorge themselves on the food while Chihiro wanders away and finds herself in the world of ghosts, animals and other strange creatures. She runs back to find her parents, only to find that they have been turned into pigs. She is found by a mysterious boy named Haku, who promises to help her. He gets her a job working in a in a bathhouse for Japan's thousands of gods and spirits, however, her parents are being held in the bathhouse's stockyard. Chihiro must find a way to break the spell before they end up as dinner.

Really, I liked the Doco considering it talked about Japan and Anime, but I thought it was 'rudderless'. And Porco Rosso was great fun in my opinion. Very funny with the school girls and the wussy Air-pirates, (Robert from "Everyone loves Raymond" did the main pirates voice very well, actually considering it was a dub it was done very well). I thought the punching scene was really funny, kinda grotesque in a way, but nonetheless funny.

Of all the Miyazaki movies I've seen I think this one has the least 'random' ness attacted to it, like fantasy stuff. And don't all of Miyazakis girls all look the same... besides Chihiro in Spirted Away.

Oh and GitS episode 3, was one of those filler ones i think. the animation was poor and the polt was slow. But the music continues to rock.

The 2nd episode was the best so far. I'm looking forward to Laputa: Castle in the Sky. I've heard its really great!

Yes, Laputa is loosely based on one of the places in Gulliver's Travels.

I first saw it in 1984 as a kid and my whole family and I loved it. I saw it again a few years ago and again not too long ago. I loved it each time. It really is worth watching. Hope you enjoy it.

Its on really late though... Im going to have to tape this one, because my holidays are over and I will have to get up at like 6ish the next day

And I agree with you Christian, ep. 2 has been by far the coolest thus far.

I missed the doco and Porco Rosso, because I was setting up my new home theatre system and couldn't get SBS to tune in! I got it working in time to watch/tape GITS:SAC 3 though

And they are going to show Spirited Away! that's great!
