What are the best animes and mangas out there?

Postby Sparrowhawk » Tue Jan 25, 2005 3:31 pm

This top part is new. I just read the faq about forums and read the term "trolling" when i read that then reread my own thread, i thought htere may be a possiblity that some may think i'm trying to stir up controversy over the best manga/anime. I cannot emphasize enough that that was the furthest thing from my mind. Please understand that i was asking for your own personal opinion for the mangas/animes that the individuals of this site felt were good so i would have an idea of where to start since there are so many and i'm a newbie. Verry sorry if i caused any confusion or controversy.

Hey, i posted this in the welcome area since i was new, but it doesnt seem to be getting any attention (sry to sound like a whiner, i do that a lot :) ) so here it is again. What are the best clean animes and mangas out there? I'm generally okay with what this website rates aound 13-15+(i think, i'm new so i dont know for sure). I really have trouble finding clean mangas :?: (i'm new to reading mangas and watching anime though i have been drawing the art style for a while). Any help would be appreciated, plus i would like to hear all of you defend your favorites. Cya! (do not talk about mangas that you feel are bad, i dont want to start an argument over this. i ask anyone replying to this not to slam others opinions, they have a right to their own ideas, read my update at the top for more clarification, thanks.)

Since I don't read mangas I'll give some suggestions on a few clean animes (random order):

Fighting Spirit
Someday's Dreamers
Princess Nine
Chance Pop Session
Grave of the Fireflies
Irresponsible Captain Taylor (occasional suggestive dialogue)
Kaleido Star
GTO (some suggestive dalogue; perhaps a few scences that may not sit well with some. Overall, not too bad but defiantly deserves a teen rating -- 16+.)

I know many more, it just depends on what type of genre you like. For me, I like them all so I provided various titles from different genres.

good clean animes (from g to PG-13 range, as you said):
Pokemon
Yugioh
Digimon
Cardcaptor Sakura
Angelic Layer
Magic Knight Rayearth
Slayers
CLAMP School
Magical Project S
Sailor Moon
FF Unlimited
Castle in the Sky
His and Her Circumstances
Azumanga Daioh

Manga:
Anything by CLAMP: (except X, Chobits, and Legal Drug. They are more R-rated range)
I think most of those titles on the list above also have mangas.

I believe the plural for both anime and manga are...anime and maga. ^_^;;; Sorry if I sound nitpicky

Anyways, anime that tops my list would be: Cowboy Bebop, Tactics, Matantei Loki Ragnarok, Kyou Kara Maou!, Escaflowne, .hack//SIGN, and Saiyuki

Topping my list of best manga would be: Tactics, Matantei Loki/Matantei Loki Ragnarok, DNAngel, Dragon Knights, Shaman King, and Fruits Basket

Oh, pet peeve of mine! I TOTALLY understand, Koko. ;)

Manga? Well, if you hopped on over to the manga forum, there are actually two or three threads about clean manga that you could get alot out of. Until then, I'll just list some names I think you should look into. These mangas may contain some more minor language (no "f" words or anything). In general, there shouldn't be any nudity, but it there is, it will be super minor, magical girl type stuff. I'll list the most outstanding objectionable content to the right of the title. Okay, with the technicalities aside:

Fruits Basket (language, mild homosexual innuendoes. Sort of, I guess)

Pretear (Nothing really. Maybe a tiny magical girl transformation every once and a while)

DNAngel (Language, and a few other mild things. Ask and I'll give you more details)

Imadoki (Language, a character is pregnant outside of marriage, few mild innuendos, and we see the lower edge of a girls underwear just once. And it's not really that big a deal.)

Tsubasa (Language and the Time-space witch [if that's her name] shows some cleveage)

XXXholic (The time space witch likes her alcohol. Alot. Also, she wears alot of cleveage barring outfits. Futhermore, there's a lot of magic, and you'll have to decide how you feel about that.)

That's just a couple off the top of my thread. You can get a more complete view of any content issues if you use the search button at the top of the page and search for the titles. There should be a thread for every manga or something. If there's not, start one or you can PM me. I'd be happy to help you out!
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

I'll always recomend:
Anime:
Rouruni Kenshin - Violant and ocasionaly bloody but not much else
Gundam Seed - Violant and with a bit of language and like one or two mild fanservice parts (that I have seen thus far)
Angelic Layer - Like no objectionable content, good clean fun
Stellvia - Good fun that has been clean so far

Manga:
Rouruni Kenshin - Same as above
A nightingale in a golden cage
That's me locked inside reality's maze
Come someone make my heavy heart light
Come undone, bring me back to life
It all starts with a lullaby

Hmm...clean anime and manga?
Well, I would suggest KareKano, CardCaptor Sakura, and Angelic Layer. Prince of Tennis is one of my personal favorites, and also Inuyasha is okay too, if you don't mind all the blood and violence. I like Hunter x Hunter, though it might be too bloody for people under 13. Also, Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne is really good, and Full Moon wo Sagashite. You can read DNAngel if you like, but it's not one of my personal favorites, no offense to DNAngel fans, of course. There's also Shaman King(my friend loves it), Kadocha, and I really love Fruits Basket.
Of Course, how could I forget Rurouni Kenshin and Naruto...^^'' If you're looking for good clean anime/manga, there are alot of them out there. ^^ hope this helps.

Good stuff that's clean...
(Scans collection... )
The Mobile Suit Gundam Movie Trilogy was good
Sailor Moon (Season 1-- I also liked S and Stars, but that has some controversial stuff in it)
Nadia: Secret of Blue Water

For anime I would (like some others) suggest Fruits Basket -and also I think Last Exile might be okay... although I've only watched up to partway through the 8th episode, so I don't know how it goes from there.

Fruits Basket: yeah, there are parts where guys hint at things other than standard guy-girl relationships, which I don't like... but for the most part only in words. Also one or two guys are a bit girl crazy... but other than that it seems mostly ok. Voilence, but only cartoony stuff.

Last Exile: uh... dunno what to say about this. It's good and I like it, but I can't think of much else. ...There's some voilence, but so far not very bad... maybe one or two bad words, but I can't remember. *shrugs* anyway so far it seems pretty clean. Although the cleanest ones I've seen so far (although the only real anime I've seen so far would be Fruits Basket, hamtaro, Last Exile and Trigun, so this probably doesn't mean too much  ) is either hamtaro or Fruits Basket. But Fruits Basket is a lot better, since Hamtaro is aimed at a younger audience.

Mine are as follows but in no specific order.
1 Gundam Wing
2 Macross/Robotech
3 Final Fantasy Unlimited
4 Mobile Suit Gundam

Well, I don't really know if they're all the greatest, but their my favorites.

Anime:
Voices of a Distant Star
Rurouni Kenshin
Bleach
...

Manga:
Ruouni Kenshin by Watsuki Nobuhiro [16+ (Violence and a few off rude comments, a few middle fingers, like three out of six books. Almost no cursing)]

+Anima by Mukai Natsume [All ages (Unofficial)] Currently unlisenced in America.

Naruto by Kishimoto Masashi(13+)

One Peice by Oda Eichiro (13+)

Kajika* by Toriyama Akira (12+) Currently unlisenced in America.

Kimi Shika Iranai* by Yoshizumi Wataru [13+ (Maybe less)] Currently unlisenced in America.

Shaman King by Takei Hiroyoku (13+)

Hikaru No Go story by Hotta Yumi, art by Obata Takeshi (All Ages)

Bleach by Tite Kubo (13+)

Yuu Yuu Hakusho by Togashi Yoshihiro (13+)

Yu- Gi- Oh by Takahashi Kazuki (13+)

Zombie Powder* by Kubo Tite [15+ (Some rude comments and violence)] Currently unlisenced in America.

These aren't really in any specific order, but Rurouni Kenshin is first because it is the best.

*I have read all volumes.

EDIT: That was close. I got a database error when I tried to submit the first time...

For manga and anime I would start with Inuyasha, especially if a person loves a good fantasy, then I would include in anime:
Dual!Parallel Trouble Adventure,a good light sci fi series with just a tad bit of
sexual content in a couple of episodes.
ROD The Tv,a good combo of action and humor.
Read Or Die,the prequel to ROD The Tv
Gad Guard, another mech series but with a difference in that the kids ride
ON their mechs and not IN them
Ravemaster, some violence here and there but Elie and Haru are such
fun characters to follow, especially Elie. :)
Duel Masters,if you like Yu-Gi-Oh!you need to check out this light hearted spoof that rarely takes itself seriously.
GITS:SAC,if you love cyberpunk and police shows this is the show for you.
FMA
.hack//sign and .hack//legend
Gundam Seed
Manga:
Tenchi Moyu
Ah!My Goddess
Ranma 1/2 hilarious if you get pass the whole Ranma changes from male to female to male again every time he gets dumped with cold/warm water!
Crest of the Stars(which I know I should have put down on anime as well)

It depends on how innocent you want to go. Pokemon and Digimon are something my little sister who's three watches, with no objections from parents.

Another thing you need to consider is whether you watch Japanese versions or English dubs. the English dubs tend to be a little more cleaner. (yugioh is a good example.)

I like Fruits Basket and .hack//sign mangas, but i don't get to read many mangas, and most of the ones I get my hands on turn out to be kinda dirty. Cardcaptor Sakura (anime) is another one that I like.

I tried to steer clear of favorites of mine that some might find questionable. For example I love Silent Mobius but there are some who might have a problem with the fact that the women of the AMP have 'pyshic' abilites and also the fact that
the antagonists are referred to as 'demons'.Also there is a lot of graphic violence
and some suggestion of sex, although not shown.
Serial Experiments:Lain is another favorite that I didn't list, but this time because of the fact that it raises questions about God and the state of reality that some might find disturbing.

Actually I would be careful when saying that. There's a lot of dubs I've watched (from ADV in particular, though I'm sure there's other companies that do this) that actually have "spiced up" dialogue, where profanities have been added that weren't in the original Japanese. Imagine my horror when I turned on the Saiyuki dub and heard them using flagrant words that being with f. ._.;
