Piano

Postby Bobtheduck » Mon Sep 01, 2003 1:29 pm

I am a person in a minority within a minority within a minority...

An anime fan that's a Christian that likes Lain... But not just Lain. Lain is very different from what many people think of anime, but it's got enough weirdness to it to appease many.

It seems most american anime fans I have met are into things like Tenchi or Evangelion or Trigun or... DBZ. Even Cowboy bebop is very mainstream. People form expectations saying "Anime is this" or "Anime is such-and-such and that"

I look around through huge lists of anime to find some interesting stuff. I've seen things that some people would swear would never be in an anime. I've seen an anime that had no violence, no sex, no supernatural things, nothing sci-fi, no weird family problems (ala Marmalade Boy), no hyper little girls, no cute animal mascots, no insane humor, no harems (ala tenchi, Love Hina, Urusei Yatsura) none of the stereotypical plots... You know what it was about? A young femal pianist and growing up. That happens to be on my favorites list right now, but it's definately not what many people think of when they think anime. The title is pretty simple: Piano.

My interests don't fall into one genre... And this anime definately doesn't share a genre with any I'd seen before... It's really just pure drama... Actually, that's not true, The glass mask (Gurasu Kamen) is also drama, and I saw this baseball one that's drama too, but it's genre is "sports" so it doesn't count.

Anyone else seen some anime that don't follow the norm? Actually, has anyone seen this one?

Don't worry about Lain. We've got quite a few a few fans around here including myself... sorta. There's a thread about it buried in the Archives.

I have never seen Piano and I don't think that I've heard it before either. I've seen Boggiepop Phantom. That isn't exactly what I would call "normal" anime.

Piano is nothing like boogiepop or lain...

Piano has no supernatural, sci-fi, slapstick, or soap opera elements. That is practically unheard of in anime I've seen.

Anime isn't a Genre, it encompases many Genres. It's a sub-medium... though that probably won't show up in conversation much... hehe

I like Lain too ^^ And Garasu no Kamen is one of the manga I have been following since I was in elementary school. Can't say I heard of Piano the anime, but I've read more than my share of drama shoujo manga. A "piano" plot would probably remind me of "Eine Kleine", a story centered around a female pianist following in her mother's/father's (forgot) tracks. It starts out with her intentionally playing bad for some reason I forgot.... but yeah---can you find any review on "Piano"?

That title, Piano, makes it almost impossible to find any info on it search engines... If you look up "Piano" on google, you'll prolly get a whole crap load of sites about pianos, pianists, songs on pianos, the movie "The piano", photos of models on pianos, etc... Ok, so I did look for "Piano anime" and found this http://www.angelfire.com/jazz/jazzie_kun/piano_-a-.html

I give no guarantees on the rest of that site, as I haven't gone anywhere else on there yet.

yeah, Piano is great, but I wouldn't buy that... I'd just wait till it comes out legitamately, or just... Well, you all know the alternative... And if you don't you can PM me.

Also, according to an earlier link I posted, Piano is a fictional Autobiography much like "Grave of the Fireflies" in other words it's a fictional story based entirely on the author's life.

After watching the opening sequence again, I have that Final Fantasy X song stuck in my head... The Piano one in the opening

Piano sound good. I like Lain no wait...love Lain!! Let's all love Lain!!!....Oh Sorry got carried away there. But there is alot of anime that does not fit into what is well.....Really the diverse range of things in anime is anime! I think that's what makes anime anime!! I kinda get mad when anime is just thought of as one thing or is sterotyped as somthing it's not! I problem I have is almost everyone I know thinks anime is one of these things: Porn, Evil, Super Evil, Diabolical, Satatic, The Devil himself trying to warp minds by sending cartoons from Japan to Kill, Steal, and Destroy.....yes I have heard the last one alot from some ministers and evangelists. Thats what I deal with all the time. But anyway if you want to see another anime that doesn't fit in that Anime thing or somthing like that check out Master Keaton it's the most original anime I've seen.

This site is a really good place for info about it: http://piano.rightstuf.com/

I seriously heard about this anime today! I was on an anime site, looking for things to buy, and came across PIANO. it looks sooooo good. I am a pianist as well as a composer so just the fact that this anime exists has moved me. The music for this is really really good... i have only heard 4 different tunes and i am blown away.

This will definately become a fav of mine. I can just tell.

I've heard of Piano and it's been on my list of titles to check out for a while. I can related to Bobtheduck in the fact that I tend to like to dig around for good anime rather than just what's been shown on Cartoon Network. I really like the older, classic-style titles.

I've been waiting for Piano to come out for awhile now. My daughter plays the piano and I thought that this might be a title that she would also like.

The official US release date is 6/28, so you shouldn't have to wait long. It's being released by Right Stuf, if y'all are interested.

From what I understand, this title has actually been licensed. Who's have ever thunk it, huh?
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

Ooh, I really want to see Piano. I will start it once enough of it is out. I love the animation style, since it's the same as Ai Yori Aoshi. ^^

I'll put in my usual plug for Twin Spica. Even though it's about dreams of space, it's refreshingly down-to-earth. It can get a bit gushy but it's free from the things that usually make people groan about anime.

So far I've watched the first 4 episodes it seems to be a decent anime. Though if you don't like drama stuff, I would avoid it. It's more of a slice of life kind of story that doesn't really accomplish much. Aside from the music, Piano hasn't really had anything too memorable... If you want to read a few reviews check out:
http://animetempy.com/reviews/PQRS/piano.htm
or
http://www.animenfo.com/animetitle,1081,qjwubn,piano.html

Up to now, I would say it's about average. May be a bit slowed paced for some.

Wow, sounds interesting.
After all the fantasy and violence and "regular" anime genres, a real life romance story should be a great change. Everyone seems to think anime must have either violence, magic, outrageous love triangles, or rectangles for that matter, or cute stuff-animal-like creatures and girls with magical powers and other worlds. It has now become a common routine for new artists to creat manga and anime like that, and sometimes that makes me sad. I would really appreciate the value of a good real life, soft-paced anime. Besides, the music is wonderful! ^__^ can't wait!
Also, i can sympasize with her, i myself love music and piano, i was so excited to play it at first, but now it has just become a daily routine.

No problem here then. Drama and especially romance are my favorite genres probably. This anime almost looks like it could be a bit of a cross between Someday's Dreamers and Ai Yori Aoshi, and I LOVED both. I wish it wasn't taking so long to be released though. We have to wait until 6/28 for just the first volume. I'm thankfully in some ways that there are only 3 in all, so I can see it all the sooner (I don't really like to see pieces of a series so far apart).
