Seriously? Is that because the movie mentions girls having periods? Crazy. It's very mild, if you ask me. Only Yesterday is very good but I think many (not all) girls would enjoy it more than I did.

There's another great movie called Whisper of the Heart but that's not a Miyazaki movie.

I've seen Only Yesterday, and honestly, that bit wasn't obscene or gross in the least- it was very matter of fact in what it presented and how it was presented was very sympathetic- many girls would get it and understand.

(this whole movie really is more adult-oriented- the smallest kids wouldn't get the whole fuss since it's all about a woman rediscovering her past and childhood. But it would still get a PG rating, because it's very innocent and clean)

I don't think I have ever met someone who agrees with me on this topic before. +5 awesome points for you, SubtleDoc. I admit I didn't even notice the environmental message in the movie until I'd watched it several times]I take those five points, but I give you ten back . Yeah, maybe I was young or maybe I'm just not a movie watcher with a critical eye, but it didn't occur to me that Miyazaki could be saying something negative about contemporary society. It is an empirical fact that human beings attempt to control and at times exploit nature, so I just thought "Hey, it's a fact in this world too." I was just interested in Mononoke Hime's world in general (especially the animal deities if you want to know the truth).

Oh, and Joe Hisaishi's score for this film is absolutely gorgeous.

That might be my VERY favorite Studio Ghibli film, even above all the Miyazaki movies - there's something just heartwarming about it. And if you're talking other non-Miyazaki Ghibli films, "The Grave of the Fireflies" gets a lot of acclaim as being the very best. I also really, really enjoy "My Neighbor the Yamadas."

Ah yes, but Totoro had three things going for it that Only Yesterday didn't, unfortunately. It was already released in the U.S. before Disney got a hold of it; it was directed by Miyazaki; and it was championed by that unstoppable force of nature, Roger Ebert.

Yeah, Kiki's a real good movie - it's the favorite for a friend of mine. I like it better each time I watch it.

Agreed; I do really enjoy Whisper of the Heart. XD It's the only other Ghibli movie I bothered to own (aside from Castle in the Sky). Also yeah, I've heard that Grave of the Fireflies is really good, but I've also heard that it is the most depressing thing ever, so I've refrained from watching it just yet. XD

I've got the Region 2 DVD with English subtitles. I'm not aware of any Region 1 releases, even though Disney holds the U.S. license.

It was featured on TCM a few years ago, so it's had an American broadcast. Not much since then.

Yes, it's both great and depressing. I can tell you just how depressing - I bought it maybe about 7 years ago. I watched it once, thought it was brilliant, and haven't watched it again. I've watched all my other Studio Ghibli DVDs at least 3-4 times each in that time span.

Just to give the real reason for what Disney hasn't release that film. The mention of girls having periods wasn't the reason why the movie hasn't been release. Disney has look at the core of who mostly buys anime and the films and it is most a 5 to 1 ratio male over female. Disney fears that if they put money into it and this before even dubbing it, it wouldn't sell like other Ghibli and they don't want to take risk.

Also, they fear some female groups would be up and arms over the movie and they would have to deal with that.

Disney has never said or been quoted that they haven't release it because of the mentions girls having periods. They just don't see it being a film that would bring in any money.

It has only been anime fans that have came up with that view about the mentions of it for the reason why Disney never release it.

I am one of the minority of people who think that Howl's Moving Castle is one of Miyazaki's absolute masterpieces. There are several that come really close to the top for me in how much I enjoy them and what good quality they are, such as Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky, and My Neighbor Totoro. But Howl's Moving Castle is my favorite, and one of the very few movie adaptations I like every bit as much as the book (even though, or perhaps because, the versions are vastly different from each other).

Howl's Moving Castle has this wonderfully other feeling that I've noticed throughout all of anime, but developed to its full potential in this movie. Most animes, I've noticed, don't bother explaining things to you in the beginning (and Studio Ghibli hardly ever bothers to explain at all). They just throw you right into the world and let you figure it out as you go. Sophie aids in that process somewhat, since she's new to Howl's castle and explores it all, but I love how you don't need to get a history lesson about the way the world works and the reasons for the war. It makes the movie feel like it belongs in a real, three-dimensional world. And the plotline itself is just...lovely. Like a fairy tale brought to life.

Yes, because I watched it. It's only a SUB thought. I thought It was good, however I wouldn't advise it for the guys. It's kind of a girlie movie, and even then for the ones that love this kind of sappy stuff. Thus, I liked it.

I can't decide, My Neighbor Totoro is excellent, but I like Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke more. Ponyo was one of my least favorites, I'll admit. Not to say it was bad thought! Lupin was good too! I love all of them... so... much!! I will never be able to decide!

You'd definitely be in the minority, but I do think it's underrated. I remember thinking that I thought it was too similar to Spirited Away...but I still loved it!

Calcifer, though, is definitely one of my favorite characters of all time, especially as voiced by Billy Crystal!

Howl's would have been wretched if Calcifer wasn't Calcifer.

I haven't voted yet because I still haven't seen Castle in the Sky, Castle of Cagliostro, Porco Rosso, or Ponyo. Currently, My Neighbor Totoro is my favorite. Most of Miyazaki's other films have bugged me in one way or another.

I think you'll find Cagliostro to be quite (pleasantly) different from his other work...and probably less irritating =).

It does now. Kiki would be my favorite. It is perhaps his most charming with Totoro coming in a very close second.

I'm gonna have to go with Howls Moving Castle. Oh how I love Howl. My second would be Nausicaä, it's a lovely movie. Then again every movie he's done is positively amazing. Miyazaki is amazing.
