Angelic Layer was very good as anime; I read the manga first so I did notice anything they skipped in the anime. However, I think I prefer the anime mostly because of how cute it is. Pretear was also a really great anime; one of my favs, and I prefer it over the manga.

Azumanga Daioh is good a manga but an even better anime.
"Let Hercules himself do what he may, the cat will mew, and dog will have his day." Hamlet, Act V. sc. 1.

"The man that hath no music in himself, nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds, is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils,....Let no such man be trusted." Merchant of Venice, Act V. sc. 1.

"The love that follows us sometimes is our trouble, which still we thank as love." Macbeth, Act IV. sc. 3.

I don't know about .hack LoTB. I disliked the ending in the anime, a lot. Though the rest of it was very good. Better than what most .hack fans give it credit for. Unfortunately I haven't read the manga yet. (I know, I know. One of the biggest .hack on this site hasn't even read LoTB. I can't buy it yet, so get off my back about it!!)

Animes that I thought were better than the manga, huh? Well I would have to go with Trigun, for the above reasons. Mainly because the action is to hard to follow in the manga. Though I still like the manga, I just think the anime is better.

Azumanga Daioh. Being animated allows for a better since of timing and the jokes tend to work better animated.

I disagree with what everyone said about Azumanga Daioh, honestly. I watched the anime and didn't like it at all, but I thought the manga was good. The reason why is that a four panel gag-a-day format seems to work well, but it doesn't translate to the animated world well. Dilbert had the same problem, it's an awesome comic strip, but the TV show was mediocre. It's hard to translate a gag-a-day format into a 22 minute show.

Anyway, to answer the question, I'll say the Saber Marionette J anime. The anime was great, with awesome characterization and stuff. The manga had really poor art, in my opinion, and was filled to the brim with fanservice and oversized uh, body parts...the TV show had no nudity and while Bloodberry was fairly well endowed, it was not to the ridiculous level of the manga. Plus the story seemed a lot poorer overall.

Ai Yori Aoshi is the same way, the manga has way too much fanservice, and it just seemed to lack something.
