Without any spoilers, any substantial difference from the original series? I rather liked the original Fruits Basket and I'm sceptical there's much to improve.

^ If I may interject: The difference is that this one is (over several seasons) actually going to finally follow the manga to its conclusion, which (in the source at least) is a far deeper and more emotionally amazing trip than you might expect. :jump:

(...Not at all biased here, of course; it's only my favorite manga of all time, LOL... ;) But for good reason, which I dearly hope this new adaptation will live up to! It's doing good so far, though. :thumb: )

TL;DR: Yes (soon, at least). :)
Saved by grace.

I ploughed through My Hero Academia. Dang, there are some parts of that that I love, some characters that I hate, and so much to work with for my fellow fanfiction writers. This is a fun ride and it's not finished yet!

Since that's not out yet, I'm wasting time with Assassination Classroom. I hate anything to do with that school system, but Korosensei is hilarious!

Right now, I'm watching Patlabor TV, Cowboy Bebop, and Majestic Prince. Just finished watching Cop Craft. The way they wove contemporary American politics and culture into a fantasy island where fairies/elves live side by side with humans was an interesting scenario. They alluded to issues like conservatism vs. liberalism, isolationism, social degeneracy, and racial separatism in a way which didn't beat the viewer over the head. Though I ought to warn people that it could get pretty bloody and often dealt with the more seedy side of crime: drugs, pornography, and prostitution.

Someone mentioned Generator Gawl up above. That is a nice little gem of an anime. Too bad most people have never heard of it. I like the dub version more than the sub.

That was me. Yeah, it had a really fascinating concept, it was just too bad it was so monster-of-the-week with no plot development for the whole first half.

I'm most of the way through Patlabor TV now; just a few episodes left to go.

Been keeping up with the Azur Lane anime, which I definitely don't recommend to anyone here.

I have mixed feelings about it. The boats are cute and I enjoy seeing them doing cool stuff. On the other hand, the quality is pretty low. The first episode was fine, but it gradually started declining, and episode 3 set the bar as low as it can go. One scene legit had storyboard images in it which made the scene really confusing to follow. It's apparently because that episode only had one animator working on it; whether they were in a budget crunch and could only afford to have one dude, or whether they wanted to let this guy flex a bit, nobody can say. The animation studio doing it is also apparently fairly new and may not have really understood the demands of a weekly schedule.

Either way, the episodes since episode 3 have been "Fine, mostly" in regards to quality but it's still disappointing to see, especially when it's apparent a lot of love has been put into the series as far as character moments.

At the very least, it's a fun watch for anyone who plays the game. Which I, uh, also don't recommend to anyone here.

Welcome. I lurk around fairly frequently these days, and there are a few others.

Your post reminded me there is actually an anime I watched recently: Porco Rosso. Really excellent, and definitely a movie adult viewers will get more out of than children. Glad I finally got around to watching it.

My first time ever hearing of it, but I just glanced at the wiki, and it sounds pretty fascinating.

So is it pretty good?

In the meantime, since I last posted I watched another anime movie, the Makoto Shinkai film Your Name. Another extremely well-done movie. I also thought, やっぱり、Shinkai Makoto is one of those people who keeps coming back to the same theme over and over again. I can kind of relate, though.

Well, I haven't watched much past episode one, as it is a current season release on Funi, but soon to be on Crunchy as well. The first show, simply Cells at Work, was an awesome depiction of the crazy complexity of the human immune system. So I imagine the Code Black will deliver the same level of content. So far it has.

I agree Your Name was pretty spectacular. Did you watch Weathering with You? (I scrolled back a bit but didn't see anything.) The movie's direction and message went a way I did not expect, but the surprise was pleasant.

I haven't watched Weathering with You yet. I had a friend recommend it to me, but she also mentioned that there was a cameo of one of the characters of Your Name in Weathering with You--and I've seen all of Makoto Shinkai's films prior to Your Name--so I thought I'd go in order.

Weathering with You is on my short list of anime movies I'd like to see when I get around to it, though.

Today I realized I made the second post to this forum, way back in 2004. The first post was made by a fellow who hasn't been seen since 2005. So I guess I'm the legacy poster. Woo-hoo. I do notice that, of all of the posters who continue to post here, many joined way back in 2004/2005. That is amazing. I suppose it just goes to show, some of us never have outgrown anime. I don't know if that's good or bad. I think it's good. Society may think otherwise.

My current obsession is Wonder Egg Priority. I am also keeping up with Attack on Titan, Horimiya, The Promised Neverland, Higurashi (the new series), and So I"m a Spider - So What? I also completed the Tonikawa first season but am up to speed with the manga -- likewise with Rent A Girlfriend, S1 done, manga read weekly.

Glad to see many of you are still around.

@ClosetOtaku: I kept meaning to stop by and say hello, though now that more than a month has gone by I'm not sure you'll see this. >.> But it is good to see you around.

Animation has always appealed to me more than live action. I'm not sure why, but maybe it's the visual simplicity, or digging deeper, maybe the way that when you're not tied to photorealism, you can express things visually in a more symbolic or metaphoric way (art and literature that express things symbolically, rather than striving for visual realism or psychological realism, also appeal to me a lot).

So, I guess for a lot of us who like animation (for whatever reason), it's appealing to be able to watch something that's animated, but not meant for kids. Or, there are some titles that even though they're meant to be watchable by children, adults will understand them more and get more out of them. A Japanese friend was recently mentioning an anime to me that was like that (I think it was Kamen Rider), and commenting that it was made that way so that parents watching with their kids could enjoy it. But Porco Rosso also comes to mind as being the same way--a child can probably enjoy it, but I think you have to be an adult to understand it.

Then there's also the Japanese cultural atmosphere and way of thinking; I was recently rereading a few volumes of Vampire Princess Miyu, and this came out to me way more strongly than when I first read them (because I have a better understanding of the culture now than I did then).

. . . I haven't actually watched any anime since I last posted in here, though, only reminisced to myself about how much I enjoyed the Vampire Princess Miyu anime (TV series) and the subtle creepiness of its last few episodes. And a friend has been telling me I must see Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, so I suppose I'll get around to that sometime. And Weathering with You. [/OT]

Every child and half of the adults I know are obsessed with Kimetsu. I mean, it's not a bad show, but I can't really identify what makes it soar so drastically above the ranks of other anime of its time.

Just finished A Certain Scientific Accelerator. Aaahhhh, I loved that show. Gave me so much to think about. It felt really rushed and kind of cramped, though, and doesn't really hold its own as a stand alone anime. But with the background of A Certain Magical Index I found it very enjoyable. SPOILER: Highlight text to read: I just love the way they gave Accelerator character growth while somehow keeping his villainous character in tact. I usually hate when moral lines are blurred, but I think Accelerator is the most beautiful depiction of an antihero I've encountered yet.

Also finally got a chance to watch Clannad after 8 years of promising to do so. I couldn't find it anywhere forever, then it showed up on Netflix. So many tears. The epitome of bittersweet. Loved it and hated it and loved it again.

Well, I just finished Kaguya-sama: Love is War, which I really enjoyed. I'd definitely rewatch it. It was hilarious (though not the sort of thing I'd show my younger brother), and it gave off a similar vibe to Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun. The characters were all surprisingly complex. Now I'm trying to finish Hunter x Hunter and contemplating starting Durarara. Though I have enough stuff on my plan to watch list I could get sidetracked. Who knows.
