Over-rated

Postby Joshua Christopher » Sun Jan 23, 2005 10:19 pm

Alright my milk-shake friends...

This is the counter-part to my other topic.

What's the most overrated anime you've seen (in your opinion)?

For me, InuYasha...O_O

Wolf's Rain, Read or Die OVA, Princess Mononoke, and Akira was a bit over-rated in my opinion. Oh, also Animatrix was too. The were all "okay" at best, but I really never saw what all the hype was about. *shrugs*

I think Akira is the most over-rated anime I've ever seen.... I just don't get what is so great about it.

Not to be rude, but I've "given it time" and I personally just do not think the series is as good as everyone says. People pushing me to watch it only lessens my opinion of it.

Eh, I guess we all have our own opinions....I really enjoyed FMA though (although I had to finally adjust after about episode 10).

I think the most overrated anime are Akira, DBZ, and Bleach.

Well, I would have to agre that Full Metal Alchemist is over rated. although I did still find it enjoyable to watch. of course, it's my friend's favorite anime and he tends to blow things out of proportion.... so that may have something to do with my opinion.......

Prolly DBZ and Yu-Gi-Oh, if that even counts as anime. I think it leans more towards junk. ^___^

Akira, Princess Monoke, Perfect Blue, Neon Genesis Evangelion. None of them are nearly as good as people say they are.

*adds FLCL and Evangelion to list* Both good, just not as good as everyone cracks them up to be. My old boyfriend was going on and on and on about FLCL and when I saw it I was really disappointed. =/

Dragonball Z and GT, Evangelion, Akira...

Final Fantasy Unlimited. I started watching it because of the FF name, and I was even impressed by the first epiosde. Sadly, as the first disc went on, I became less and less interested in the show, and even though I own all the DVDs, I haven't gotten past episode 5.

Gundam SEED. Everyone says this show is awesome...I tried watching it a couple of times, and I couldn't get past how absolutely awful it was. The animation was flat and uninspired, and the characters were boring. This is just my opinion, though, I know many others disagree. ^^

Fruits Basket. The manga completely and totally rocks, don't get me wrong, in fact it's probably one of my favorite manga series ever. But the anime just isn't that great...I was extremely disappointed by it.

I was thinking of creating this thread myself

My list:
Akira (I think it got all the hype because it was different than Disney)
Vampire Hunter D (Followed in AKira's wake in the US)
Gundam Wing (easily the worst series of Gundam)
Voices of a Distant Star (much of the hype was misleading)
Blood (A lot of focus on CG. None on story)
Slayers (It's just mediocre)
Bubblegum Crisis 2040 (What did you fiends do to Nene? Stick with the OVA)
Love Hina (stick with the manga!)
Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight (Um, to count as anime, it needs to be ANIMATED!)
FLCL (Gainax least inspired series)
Princess Nine (No it's NOT original. Just the same old sports cliches using girls instead of guys)
Ranma 1/2 (Ranma changes gender at the worst possible times, gets into martial arts fights, argues with Akane. Repeat 161 times)

Let us all keep in mind that one person's trash is another's treasure. Please do not be too violently against any anime, keeping in mind that others might very much enjoy it.

I would probably agree with you on the first movie, but I believe that the sequel was actually quite good. That might be a personal preference in some areas, but in terms of animation and story it was vastly improved.

The only anime I would immediately place on my list is Martian Successor Nadesico. According to the box it was voted the Best Anime at some point, which I feel is quite high over the mark. After roughly ten episodes, I simply felt it had no factor to motivate me to watch it, and plenty that annoyed me.

Right. Should have made that clear I was talking about the original Vampire Hunter D (haven't seen the sequel).

I forgot about that one. The first couple of episodes were really great, but at about the third tape, I lost interest.

P.S. AnimeHeretic, looking over your list, I'd say that you live up to your name quite well. :P

The reason I GOT this name was because I disliked many anime that others enjoyed ;)

But the topic was over rated, not hated. Some on my list weren't bad, but just not good enough to deserve all the acclaim they got.

I'm not sure hoe Final Fantasy Unlimited can be over-rated for me since the few reviews of it I read panned it. To be over-rated, I'd say it would have to have a ton of big fans singing it's praises. I know I sing the praises of a couple of series already mentioned.

Escaflowne, Evangelion, and RahXephon top my list. Gasaraki was supposed to be some kind of masterpiece, too, and it wasn't.

Naruto. maybe it takes a while to get started but I found the first volume or so to be rather mediocre.

...why is there so much hate for Gundam Wing? because it's more character driven and interesting than all the other Gundam shows I've tried to watch? o_O

with Akira you have to consider the time. it was cool for the time, it's just okay now.

personally I was pretty impressed by Princess Mononoke and thought Spirited Away was hyped up way too much. Ghost in the Shell also wasn't that great. DBZ is also pretty overrated. but I disagree with Cowboy Bebop being overrated. that was a pretty good show. Perfect Blue was alright, but I'd have to see it again to really judge. it's been a long time. also, a friend of mine hyped FLCL up and then I saw it and was thinking "...and the big deal is?"

You're right, I haven't seen very many good reviews for it either. Sometimes I tend to get carried away on stuff...sorry.

I was just reminded by Shiroi of another show I think is overrated. Excel Saga. I had high hopes for it, being that so many people had said it was hilarious, and even the case itself promised a whole heap of laughs. I was eager to watch it, and I put in the first DVD, watched it...and I think I laughed maybe once during all four or five episodes I saw. Maybe I was too mature for the humor, or something, but it just wasn't that amusing. Overrated, IMO.
