Opinions? Thoughts?

As for me, I'm not even an Eva fan (yet) but I think that this is just another case of a nut going off the deep end-and then blaming something else for causing it rather than his own twisted mind. It's really sad. . .why do people have to do things like this, taking innocent lives? :sniffle: :mutter: :sniffle:

Hopefully this doesn't pull a "pocket monsters" and get spread around by watchdog groups, but because of Eva's popularity, it probably will...

"Those sick, pornograpic, violent japanese cartoons are going to make our kids commit suicide and murder and rape people!"

Worst thing is, people in Japan (like in the US) DO take these things very seriously... Overreactions aren't exclusive to Christian Grandmas in the biblebelt... Fear and swift reaction to it are part of human nature... The "Otaku murders" from the 80's almost destroyed the anime and manga industries. It's sad, but true...

Ugh. I hope Focus on the Family and Kjos and all don't pick up on this. . .I mean, it would be ironic: 99 percent of the anime fans I personally know are pacifists or at the very least, opposed to murder and see insanity as something that needs to be treated rather than encouraged.

(I'm worried about the one man who wasn't theoretically opposed to murder last I checked who posts here at this board *cough*Cephas*cough*)

My point though, is that I don't think anime fans have any corner on insanity. I mean, I've read of several cases of people who would never watch anything like Eva who went off the deep end in a similar way-except with different terminology but a very similar reason as their reasoning for what they've done. The Andrea Yates case for example. . .

My point is that everywhere there is a massive grouping of people in society (anime fans, Fundamentalists, politicians, daily readers of the New York Times, dog owners, and we could go on about this forever) there will be psychotics in it, because there are psychotic people in all of humanity. And yes, some of those psychotics will go over the edge and hurt or kill someone. :sniffle:

However, does that mean NGE, church and the Bible, the political process, crossword puzzles and news, or a pet, for example, itself drove someone over the edge? Of course not, and I hope people understand that.

I'll save my rant on why society in general needs to take better care of the mentally ill for later. :)

that's bad. real bad. out of all the possible answers you can get he got the answer that he should kill people. out of all the possible scenarios you can get from watching Evangelion, he gets the idea to go on a murder rampage.

so sad to see just one person ruin everything, when so many others enjoys it.

Yeah. . .all right, I'll rant now.

In both American and Japanese society, the mentally ill are marginalized and excluded. Someone suffering as this young man must have been should have been able to go somewhere, say what he was feeling, and get some help. :sniffle:

Instead, he probably knew that if he did get help, he would forever be marked as a "psycho case" or "mentally ill," so he chose to withdraw into himself, formed his insane belief systems, and then acted on them. :sniffle:

I honestly think the removal of the stigma from mental illness would do much, much more good for society than almost anything else: especially, since if an illness is treated and/or controlled properly, the person with said illness is no worse a person than anyone else, is just as capable as others are, and does not deserve to be ostracized. :sniffle:

And let me use this rant to plead to anyone here who has suicidal or homicidal thoughts, even in the slightest: GET HELP. NOW. There are people that can help you, there are places you can go, there is help-I beg you to find it, and if you want, PM me and I'll find it for you if you feel that you can't find it. If I'm not online, I'll get to your message as soon as I possibly can.

Don't become another statistic, and don't make me cry even more, all right? :sniffle: Life is a precious gift, and to see it taken because someone didn't get the help they need. . .that is the most sad thing of all. :sniffle:

That is so disgusting. It always amazes me and sickens me how people can twist different words and phrases to justify themselves. No one wants to take the blame anymore. Notice how often people plead "temporary insanity" in court cases? I understand there are exceptions, but give me a break. You did the crime, now you have to pay for it.

That's crazy (no pun intended). At least they young man was caught before he killed anyone else...

I don't think we have to worry about Congress banning anime or anything like that. There will probably be some people who try to exploit this to further the cause of censorship and thought control, but the most they will do is get some sort of rating system placed on anime, which no one will pay attention to anyway.

I'd like to say more, but I have to get to class. :(

thats pretty twisted...
That is the exception though, and not the rule...
Battle Angel Alita could be construed as a violence causing manga as well but I've never heard of a reaction like that before now to any manga....and the govt. wont do diddly. Doom was blamed in the Columbine shootings and there still are video games like that out and in production. (Halo, GTA, GTA:VC) all they'll do is enact a rating system of sorts. Oh and wasnt Natural Born Killers used as a justification in a murdur case?

Well, he killed someone and he got caught. Now he's putting up a smoke screen trying to hide the fact that he beat his mother to death. It doesn't matter if he got the idea from Evangelion, the point is that he needs some swift justice.

But back to the topic, somebody's always going to be oppossed to something some people like. Look at Harry Potter, look at Dungeons and Dragons, look at homeschooling. Anyway, I wouldn't be scared of it because anybody with a brain knows that Evangelion and anime didn't kill that women.

Yah. o.o My dad listens to Focus on the Family sometimes and he would have a fit if heard something like that. I'm serious, he might not let me watch anime anymore. At the very least he wouldn't let me watch Eva...

I'm not certain how many people will take it very seriously. I mean, does anyone bother with nonsense like "Dark Dungeons" anymore?
The scientific method," Thomas Henry Huxley once wrote, "is nothing but the normal working of the human mind." That is to say, when the mind is working; that is to say further, when it is engaged in corrrecting its mistakes. Taking this point of view, we may conclude that science is not physics, biology, or chemistry—is not even a "subject"—but a moral imperative drawn from a larger narrative whose purpose is to give perspective, balance, and humility to learning.

This has got to be the first time I've heard somthing like this blamed on anime. Anyway yea the Japanese do take thing seriously. Most christians that think anime is evil porn think Japanese people are sick and have no morals. But the truth is they are as cautious as americans when it comes to what they will let there kids see. But anyway I don't want to go off topic but this does worry me abit but I don't think it will get very far seeing that anime still has along way to go in that tons of people still don't know what the heck anime is.

Yeah. -.-;; People tend to link anime with there first encounter with it. Like, if the see pokemon first, they'll think that all anime is pokemon. If they see some anime porn picture, in say, a spam e-mail, they'll think all anime is porn.

I would say look it up on google, but there are actually some nasty sites you get that are associated with his name... Anyhow, this guy was obsessed with really violent hentai and killed a bunch of people... He was in the first group of anime fans to use the term "otaku" (house) to refer to one another, and this group (the otakus) were often shown as having no life and incapable of social interaction (the same sort of image associated with "Dungeons and Dragons") and the image of his appartment was shown on Japanese news... He had pictures and tapes and things all over the place of various (primarily violently pornographic) anime and manga, and it really caused some damage...

Gah! This happens all the time... people scapegoating. He could have gotten the same conclusion from "The Matrix", or "Trigun", or "Princess Mononoke" or almost anything... heck, he could have even gotten it from "The Chronicles of Narnia" (In that, it is a human who brings sin/strife into Narnia orignally, - a parallel to the Bible). ...

I've seen so much of this stuff... like... watching an A&E Biography on Stephen King... the one novel he regrets ever publising, "Rage" has been used in school shooting cases - when it was never the man's intent for people to do that when he wrote the book...

I remember reading someting on a Trigun site about a case involving a young man, a homade bomb, and his love for the Trigun anime was brought up in the case... when.. well, Trigun has a totally OPPOSITE philosophy about taking human life...

And, how many times have people used the BIBLE for stuff like this? There was a local case a few years ago where a woman murdered her daughter (who had been born out of wedlock), because she thought she "thought it was the will of God" for her to eliminte the result of her sin or some garbage like that... Then, there was that case of the kindnapped girl (national case, but I forget her name), whose kidnappers were kind of cultists, but used the Bible...

On a local Alternative rock station I listen to, there is a person who gives a somewhat humorous "Politically Incorrect, Yet Touching Moment"... after the kidnapping case, he (he's an athieist, by the way), proposed that Bibles should be like guns... that people should get background checked and all kinds of screenings before being allowed to read or to own a Bible. I was so mad at him! :mutter: (and he has a tone that anyone who believes in the Bible anymore is a nut, anyway...)

Listen... I read and live by the Bible... I've read a little Stephen King (though I'm not really a fan... only read a little by him, and I dislike certain aspects of his style)... I love anime... I've watched Neon Genesis Evangelion... I am not the most mentally stable person in the world... but...

I'm one of those pacifistic folks that MillyFan mentioned. I just get sick of hearing these things, people scapegoating things they don't understand, people using things as co-outs... gah.

That's incredibly sad. What a horrible thing for a family to go through. While I don't care for the anime, I also feel bad for the EVA fans. It doesn't seem fair to have a blemish on your favorite anime because of another messed up fan.

Hopefully this case will be handled like that of the aforementioned bomb case-there will be some sort of defense by both Anno and Gainax that the point of their anime was not to encourage people to kill others.

That's really sad. Nobody today wants to take responsibility for their own actions, we all have to blame it on somthing or someone else. Which really just highlights personal sin, and the need for a personal savior.

Yes this all very sad... I'm not an Eva fan; however, I feel sorry for the fans of the show. I personatly don't like Shinji and thought he was a cry baby and that the series was mess up. But I really don't understand how can people be so creative about kill other people? I'm an anime fan and love animes very much, but I'm kind of out there sometimes, still I don't do stuff like that. What you guys mention about that kid bitting his mom to death is ... I don't even have words for it sick wouldn't be enough.
