Americanizing Anime

The real heart of CAA; discuss specific series, issues, and things related to anime here.

I don't believe anyone has noted that some subbed versions of anime sound strange, if not hard to listen to and still enjoy the anime. Anyway, it all boils down to two words: PERSONAL CHOICE.
K. Ayato: What happens if you press the small red button?

*Explosion goes off in the movie*

mechana2015: Does that answer your question?

K. Ayato: Perfectly.

Yes, it does seem stupid for someone to be shot or beaten and no blood. But then you get soccer moms complaining they saw blood on a Y7 or PG rated t.v. show or kids who can seperate reality and cartoons and attempt to stab a friend cause they were tyring to reanct a scene. Awful examples but nevertheless realistic scenarios that has happened.

Well..it got kinda hot in here...

I like both version..both subed and dubbed... I take my anime any way I can be it edited and dubbed so be it...

The thing is, some times the dubbers can't get the translation EXACTLY so they have to change the sript a little... they still have basically the same storyline...but different words...

I really don't see the bigga deal... I like both..and watch both... sometimes I am just too tired to read...so I watch...soemtimes the dub is better and sometimes the sub is better... it all depends as someone said, PERSONAL CHOICE!

Watching a subbed version doesn't make anyone a BETTER anime fan..or More dedicated... and the same goes for dubbed...

I just watch the version that has the least annoying voices. You gotta admit, sometimes you watch those subbed anime where the guy sounds like a total woman and it drives you crazy, or the dubbed where a female sounds way too crazy excited every time she opens her mouth; so really whichever that has the better sounding voices, that's the one I'll be watching.

and not insult our Canadian friends by leaving them out of it.

I wouldn't worry about that. Hopefully our Canadian friends will realize that we're not doing it on purpose and forgive us.

For the last time, I was not bashing anyone.

Can we just forget this already? I've already said that I wasn't, and I quote:

For the last time, I know my response may have come off sounding rude, but that was not my intention. I've already said this. Just forget it already. /-_-

Look, some people hate dubs, some people like them. I don't even know why we need to discuss this. Do you think someone is going to change their mind? Naw.

My personal rule of thumb. :thumb: If I can't stand the screeching voices in the sub, I go for the dub. If I can't stand the stiff delivery in the dub, I switch to the sub.

Simple as that, folks. No need to get your shorts in a bunch.

As Christian Ronin said:

I personally think this discussion is over. You can look at a similar thread at http://www.christiananime.net/showthread.php?t=16047 . Now let's all be nice.

Heed wrote:I am sick of us Americanizing all the good anime (i.e. Full Metal Alchemist, Naruto, and a few others) BAsically, when it is Americanized it is made more for children and they cut out alot of the really funny stuff. Stop bringing it over here and cutting it to pieces. I think they should subtitle it. Japanese voices are better because it is more natural. It is how it was meant to be.

I really don't approve with ruining all the good anime. Now, I don't mind if they bring the cruddy anime and ruin that (i.e. Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT, Sailor Moon etc...) But when you started destroying and editing perfectly good anime like FMA and Naruto, it bothers me.

I just know they are going to edit out some col fighting scenes just because of the violence but that is why I enjoy some of it.

Except for the part about ruining certain specific anime, I strongly agree. I think an English dub is fine for people who want it in their own language, but making the Japanese version available should be a requirement. And none of it should be butchered. If there's enough material that they deem not suitable for young kids, don't aim it at young kids. For instance, though I myself am not interested in Yu-Gi-Oh, it makes no sense at all for 4Kids to license it, since it's not a kids show. It should have been licensed by someone else and released like many anime are: on dvd with a dual audio track, unedited, and possibly on a channel like Anime Network. I'm very much against editing anime, I think it should be left alone. Heck, I can even get a bit ticked off about many anime licensing companies replacing the Japanese credits with English credits (like Pioneer or Viz, for example). They can do that for the dub if they want, but when you watch it in Japanese, you should be able to see the original Japanese writing. Big thumbs up to Disney for doing this right with the Ghibli releases. There could also be a translated script at the end of the DVD if you watch it in Japanese and want to see the translated credits, like the X TV DVDs. And the dub script should be as accurate as possible to the original. I think Japan has a facinating culture, and though much of it is being eaten away by American influence, it would be nice if what left of it that's shown in anime could be left alone when it's shown in the US. Not everything has to be American. It's nice to learn of other cultures, and I just hate it when something is messed with to try and make it more "suitable" to whatever culture it's being brought into. I'd think the same if an American show or movie was brought to Japan and messed with. Just leave it alone. Give it to us completely untampored with.

First> I never said that CN dubbed anime. I said they've been known to edit it.

Second> Mr. Impact Alberto, I wasn't complaining at you saying that you were bashing. I know that you apologized. I was just using what you said and what someone else said as an example to emphasize my point. Maybe you're the one overreacting a little.

Third> Since everybody keeps mentioning that its each one's personal choice why don't we just leave it at that? I like both subbed and dubbed, some people like my friend Brit can't stand subbed just cause she doesn't like to read. And there are others that prefer subbed just because.

We all know this, we all make our choice, lets not be mean and be the nice happy little duckies we're supposed to be.
