Possible Troll Militia?

Postby BigZam » Sun Nov 14, 2004 8:41 pm

I'm not really concerned, persay, but I noticed something really strange. As I was perusing through the member list one day, I noticed a large amount of members who have registered long ago, have user titles as Registered User, and haven't posted very little or haven't posted anything. Very fishy...

There are many lurkers around here. It's not surprising really, as many forums tend to have very low number of actual posters in relation to those who just likes to read. Myself is one of those people, who doesn't post very often. In actual case, CAA is much more active than other forums I know of.

Well, not a big deal. Even if some of them are trolls they'll be squished in no time. Right you lot of mods and admins? ;)

Speaking for the "lot", you got that right.

We do like to keep a clean list, so we do prune it off every once in a while. But rest assured, one of the primary search parameters when we do it is not logging into CAA for several months and a low post count.

And we've found out there really is no effective way to stop trolls from coming before hand--that is to say, even screening all the ones that join and killing the very obviously offensive usernames, the smarter ones will slip through and wait to strike. And there's no way to stop that except shutting down or backing off--and we're not willing to do either. The best we can offer is quick, decisive counter-measures and hope the least amount of people have seen it.

Am I looking too far into this? I mean, these people are basically dormant...

I think the admins have it covered; there's nothing for you to worry about. ;)

I believe the tomato was thrown at John316, because he ducked. At least, I will assume it was done in the spirit of randomness. In any case, I believe this thread has served it's purpose, and would suggest we not post further unless there is something new to bring to light.
