Book Club....?

Anyone else interested in starting a CAA book club?

There seems to be quite a few readers -- casual and avid alike -- lurking about here, so I think that we could pull it off.

Something like once a month we chose one novel/novella and read it, and then at the end of the month, we get together and discuss it.

So, if there's ever been a book that you've always planned on reading at some point in your life (A Tale of Two Cities, Macbeth, 1984, etc), this would be the way to do it because you could ask stupid questions (Ohmygosh... so Darney and Carton aren't twins separated at birth?????), and be able to get it explained/answered so you understand the book better.

I’m kind of leaning towards a mixed reading list, a little itty-bit of pulp fiction, with a good chunk of some real literature mixed in; either contemporary or classical..... Probably mixed genres too....

Right now I'm looking around for a couple of 'Top 50 Books Ever Written' lists to help get some ideas about the reading list, so if anyone has some suggestions, shout out. Or in general, shout out if you're interested...!

the mixed reading thing is an awsome idea for average readers to find out about books they would normaly have no idea about.

i would personnaly like to read some Steinbeck and Clancey ( see, a mix! )

My suggestion: R.A. Salvatore's Dark Elf collection. (Though they are a tad violent, they're short and well written. Consider yourselves forwarned!)

Redwall is my recomendation for the reading list =]

Man, I haven't read Redwall in at least four or five years. But which one? That will be tricky.

If we wanted to go prestigious we could go The Watership Down.....

My AP Lit Professor gave me a list of his 200 favorite books/authors, so I'm working a bit off of that. I'll let you know when I get a good list of about 10 or so of them, so we can get our 'Classics' covered.

These are two that I'd like to cover:

The Hollow Kingdom
Why? Because I love this book. And will use any excuse to read it again. Isn't not exactly hard reading, but it's really well written.


A Bridge to Eden
I've been looking for a excuse to read this for a while now. My prof actually wrote it, but I've never gotten around to actually read it yet......

So, let's see, I think that we should get about, oh, 25 book suggestions, and then we can either pick all 12 books for the year at once, or pick them one by one for each month.

Megan Whalen Turner's book, The Theif, is really good. The sequal, The Queen of Attolia, is good as well, although you need to read the first to understand it.

Although, those books do have some cursing, and a little bit of weird religion. (A patheon of gods similar to the greeks and romans)

Maybe we should mix in some Christian Fiction as well? (My apologies if any has been listed... Since I am relatively new to the faith, I have yet to peruse any of the Christian works out in the world. Sorry in advance!)

Hmmmmmm.... Mere Christianity by CS Lewis is awesome. There's a teen version of it that we could do quite easily. That and Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan are probably two of the most influental Christian books ever written.
I've read bits of Mere Christianity, and even skimming over it, I was learning a lot. Pilgrim's Progress is a bit more dated though, but I'll check seeing if there is a newer, 'teen' version of it around. The orinigal is a bit dated, 1700's if memory serves, so there will probably be a few words that you wouldn't probably know right off of the bat, but the morals and the theme are very good.

A book club is a great idea. Two books I'd like to recommend are "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" and its sequel " The Second Summer of the Sisterhood." There is some language and mature subject matter in them, but they are really great books to read.

Just because I have to... You guys better be very clear about what IS and ISN'T appropriate for what audience. For example, I don't think anyone would care about, say, David Eddings, but if you tried to do a Terry Goodkind novel, you would need to be VERY carefull about which CAA members you try to get to read. Remember, we have members of all ages here, and it would be really upsetting to some parents if their kid was reading something they didn't approve of.

Incidentally, I felt a great deal of 40 days of purpose was "Christian Fiction," but I don't think I'm in the majority, and we probably shouldn't tangent on it. It was just a funny staggering of posts...

I know. Mind you, most of the books on the list so far are pretty tame; I've personally read about 3/4 of the suggestions so far, and the ones that I haven't I'm will be going through personally reading before I suggest anything final. Promise.

I have an essay to write still tonight for AP Lit, so I won't be one 'till Saturday to do it.

So, on that note, what do you guys wanna start this off with? Personally, I wouldn't mind reading Mere Christianity. (And safe, right Big Brother? ) What do you guys think?

Mere Christianity is a great book and would get my vote for being good for the first reading.

The word is "ani" ( あに ). And yes, I think C.S. Lewis qualifies as "safe", although I must point out that not all our readers would likely be interested in that one. It's, ahem, thick. Not in terms of number of pages, mind you, but the theology get's a bit dry from time to time.
