how would you go about learning to read japanese?

In the thing I've been using to learn japanese, I've got to switch from reading japanese in romaji, to reading and writing japanese characters in hiragana and katagana pretty soon.
Last time I tried, I was doing it all to fast and lost interest, because it was very hard to do.
Now it should be easier, because I'm taking it alot slower and can actually remember what I've been learning.
But, when I do have to read japanese, what would be the best method to learning how?
constant reading/writing in japanese hiragana/katagana?
or... what?
