Star Wars Episode 1 is going to be rereleased in theaters in 3D. The release date is February 12, 2012.

Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox announced today that the 3D theatrical launch of Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace now has an official release date -- February 10, 2012! Set against the thrilling and exotic backdrop of a "galaxy far, far away," Star Wars is perfectly suited to the immersive 3D theatrical experience, and Episode I delivers some of the Saga's most stunning and spectacular sequences -- from the Naboo invasion to the Tatooine Podraces to the climactic lightsaber battle between Darth Maul and the Jedi.
Supervised by Industrial Light & Magic, the meticulous conversion is being done with utmost respect for the source material, and with a keen eye for both technological considerations and artistic intentions.

Dang, I thought by the title you meant they were going to completely rewrite it to be a good movie instead of a terrible shallow one.

Yeah, pretty much this. I loved Ep 1 bcs Ewan McGregor was gorgeous, but the story? Severely lacking.

He totally was. Honestly he was part of the reason I watched it so many times when I was younger.

I find this to be incredibly humorous unless there is some sort of alternate version of Episode I that was actually the greatest movie ever made but was only released to this guy...or something...

And here I was trying to be helpful. :P

(I am a bit of a smart aleck myself, so no big.)

I just want to echo that this is a horrid idea. George just needs to quit --like, a few movies ago.

Great now we can see Jar Jar act like an idiot in 3D.

Might see it just for the lightsaber battle.

So a mediocre movie will be made even worse? I hate 3D. I enjoyed some scenes in Phantom Menace (the pod race was pretty good and the fight with Darth Maul was very enjoyable - if illogical). I even enjoyed aspects of Attack of the Clones. Rise of the Sith was pretty good. Not quite as good as the original trilogy though (the action scenes were a little too busy at times and Anakin's fall to the dark-side could've been a little more developed and gradual).

I don't know about you, but ever time I see Jar Jar stick his tongue out to grab a piece of fruit, the first thing I think is, "You know what's missing here? 3D."

EDIT:

Dang, I thought by the title you meant they were going to completely rewrite it to be a good movie instead of a terrible shallow one.

That was EXACTLY what I thought. I was like, "Well, I'm not sure how they could take what they've already got and turn it into a good movie, but it's an interesting id--oh."

I should have made that joke somewhere other than the thread title, it seems. XD

I wonder why George Lucas is going through with this, considering he actually believes the world is going to end in 2012. He ought to be building a spaceship to escape the Earth instead.

Yes. This movie will be precisely the cause of that.

I can't wait until January 1, 2013 and all the weirdos are gonna be like... "...Oh."

I don't doubt that ILM will make it look awesome, but really, what's the point. Lucas, make a movie about something else, ok? You've done that before.

Yes, fight the majority opinion! *Goes to mountaintop* THE PREQUELS DID NOT SUCK COMPLETELY!
There, I said it. Now, excuse me while I get my armored box and hide in it to protect myself from the onslaught of tomatoes and insults. Really, I think the main problem is that the prequels aren't "old enough" yet. Give them more time to age, and maybe more people will stop saying they stink. I mean, just because an opinion is popular and in vogue doesn't mean it's right. Let's not forget popular opinion also got some bad things off the ground.

Um, it's been over a decade. I think it's fairly safe to say that enough time has passed that if those movies were anything but mediocre, more people would be saying it.

The original trilogy is pretty cheesy too if you watch it critically. The problem with the prequels lies with its storyline, romance, and characters. The storyline of the original star wars trilogy was rather concise and made sense.

The plotline of Episode I just felt like an excuse plot to me. Episode II's plot was okay as it established many of the constants about the Star War's universe. However, Hayden's acting was badddddddd. Not to mention his romance with Padme was so bad, it made me fast forward all those scenes. I will admit that I do enjoy Episode I and II, but I recognize that they're not that great.

Episode III imo improved on many levels, although it still had a few setbacks *cough*romance*cough* I really enjoyed Episode III.\

The funny thing is, I heard the Clone Wars show is actually pretty good.

Like many others, the title of this thread gave me hope, but then, yeah. Never mind. Lucas is still lame. -_-

I agree, they did not suck completely. The graphics were rather nice.
I just wish they'd recast most of the characters and rewrite the screenplay of all of the prequels. Much of the acting and the lines they had to say were really terrible and flat.
