Worst sequels

Postby rocklobster » Sat Jan 22, 2011 5:59 am

In honor of the Nostalgia Critic's Sequel Month, I've decided to ask what you people think are the worst sequels you ever watched? Here's my list of torture:
Police Academy 2-7
Batman and Robin (A BAT CREDIT CARD!)
Superman IV
The Little Mermaid 2 (only Tara Strong's performance is worthwhile)
The Fox and the Hound 2
Bambi 2
Spider-man 3 (what a mess)
any Land Before Time sequel (really, they should've just made one movie)
Home Alone 3 (no Kevin, so what's the point?)
The Neverending Story 2 and 3 (ugh!)
The Secret of Nimh 2 (UGH! THIS WAS HORRIBLE!)
"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you. I appointed you to be a prophet of all nations."

I have to put Toy Story 2 up there. It my not have been a bad movie in and of itself, but definitely didn't live up to Toy Story.

Other than that.... Okay, I admit it! I know that most sequels are horrendous, so I never pick them up- no matter how awesome the first movie was. Because I know they will let me down.

(PS- I liked Home Alone 3 better than the first two Home Alones. The first one had someone stepping on a nail, and since I've done that and know how painful it is, I couldn't find it funny. And that ruined the entire movie for me.)

Pocahontas 2

Alien 3 (Note: I've not seen the last one, but in all seriousness they should have left it after the first two.)

The Lion King 2 (I admit it's not bad, but it doesn't grip me like the first one did.)

Is it sad that I love TLK2? Or even Bambi 2? xD Sequels are hardly ever as good as the first movie, but I can't really think of any I didn't like right now.
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

WHAT. Oh my goodness, this post makes me so sad. XDD I love all three Toy Story movies, and I thought 2 was definitely just as good as the original. XD

Anyways, posting in this thread is difficult for me. XD Not only do I tend to stay away from bad sequels, but it's just far easier to pick out which sequels are actually good, instead of naming off really bad sequels, since there are SO MANY. XD

That being said, I wish the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels had never been made. XD

[font="Trebuchet MS"][SIZE="4"][color="RoyalBlue"]Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (I'm sorry, but William Shatner should stay in FRONT of the camera and away from the directors chair. A good Star Trek movie, in my opinion, should be timeless. The viewer should not be able to tell when the movie was made. One can CLEARLY tell that this was an 80's movie--the hair, the costumes--ugh...Not hating on anyone who likes this movie, but it's not my cup of Earl Grey. And since WHEN did Uhura and Scotty have a little "thing" going on?!)

The Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions
Jurassic Park: The Lost World & III (why 3 never had a subtitle, I will never understand)
Star Wars: The Prequel Trilogy
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Batman & Robin
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest & At World's End
Grease 2
S. Darko (I haven't seen it, but this is the very definition of an unnecessary and unwanted sequel)

I would put Transformers here, but I don't know if a terrible sequel to a terrible first movie is really a bad sequel.

Edit: I have one more that I'm sure would be controversial, so I will hold off on adding it until I have the time and energy to explain it.

Atlantis: Milo's Return. I didn't watch more than several minutes of it, it really was awful. Atlantis: The Lost Empire was so good, and then the sequel is like a bad fanfiction... It was disappointing.

At the moment, I can't think of more that others haven't already said.

Highlander II, III, and IV... but II takes the cake as being one of the worst sequels period.
Alien 3 and 4
Any disney direct to video sequel.
Saw III (never saw a Saw movie since)
Jaws 3 and 4 (3 was the worst though IMO)
Any Ernest sequel (though the first was bad too)
Gremlins II...
Terminator Salvation
Nightmare on Elm Street VI (I think that was the one... with the kid getting sucked into the Nintendo game? Dreadful movie)

Ah there are plenty more.

Edit: Oh I forgot, there were actually a Highlander V... which was about as bad as Highlander II. Dreadful movie...

Toy Story 3 was absolute brilliance.

Some of my most hated sequels are The Secret of Nimh: Timmy to the Rescue and The Neverending Story 2 (and especially The Neverending Story 3).

Pretty much everyone has mentioned all the ones I would have mentioned, but I will go ahead and cast my vote for the Star Wars prequels (technically not "sequels", but they were made after the originals so that's good enough for me). Sure, there are lots of movies out there that are far more terrible, but few are as utterly disappointing.

Also the POTC sequels are an abomination.

There are many awful sequels, so it would be kind of pointless to list them all, but here are some of the ones that have bugged me the most:

Pirates of the Caribbean 2 and 3
Aladdin: The Return of Jafar (you know a movie's going to suck if you take Robin Williams out of it)
the Air Bud sequels (I rather liked the original movie, but the rest is overkill)
every Home Alone sequel
Mulan 2
Star Wars Episode II

Has anyone here seen Brother Bear 2? I've always assumed it's total garbage, but I've always been too afraid to check it out because the original Brother Bear is one of my favorite Disney movies of all time. I would be curious to hear what it's like, though.

I'm gonna go ahead and disagree with you here. Completely.

Return of Jafar is obviously not as good as the original Aladdin. I admit that. However, it's not a bad movie. It's actually a lot of fun and pretty decent. Besides, it's hardly an unnecessary sequel, unlike stuff like Lion King 2 or Little Mermaid 2. There was a definite opening for a sequel, that being "Hey Jafar is a genie now and in a lamp, what if someone finds it and frees him?" They didn't have to invent something stupid just for the sake of a sequel, which helped immensely.

The writing was also very good from what I remember ("I thought genies couldn't kill people!" "You'd be surprised what you can live through."), and okay yeah, Robin Williams isn't in it. It's always annoying when they replace an established character with a new actor, but I think it didn't hurt anything in this case. Dan Castellaneta is a brilliant actor, and he pulled off the role of Genie just as well as Robin Williams did. It also doesn't hurt I find Robin Williams a bit overrated; not to say he's bad, he's a brilliant actor but I don't think he's as great as some claim.

At any rate, Robin Williams did come back and play the Genie again in the third Aladdin movie, the reason he wasn't in the second was apparently due to some dispute between him and Disney. It has to do with Robin Williams NOT wanting Disney to emphasize him playing Genie in the first Aladdin movie, actually. Robin Williams was making Toys at the same time, and didn't want his role in Aladdin to overshadow that movie, so the contract they signed said that Disney was not allowed to use Robin Williams' name in advertising or promotion of Aladdin, and that Genie was not allowed to take up more than 25% of the space of advertising images for the movie.

Of course, Disney went back on both of these deals. So actually, I think the movie benefited from Robin Williams not being in it. He didn't even want to be associated with the movie in the first place. :p

At any rate, it has been years since I saw the movie, but I remember it being pretty good for a direct to video Disney sequel. Again, certainly not as good as the original, but decent in its own right.
