The Cape

Finally got around to watching the pilot that aired on Sunday. I have to say this looks promising. It's a show about a cop who becomes a superhero when he's framed by an evil corporation that wants to privatize the city's police force. He's helped by a blogger and an underground circus (headed by Keith David? Sure sounds like him). So, did anyone else here watch the pilot? (The show itself will start 1/17 at 8/9 on NBC.)

That is Keith David. I watch the two eps last Sunday night that it aired and I like it.


But after reading what they plan to do with the show in the comming eps, I'm now scared to death they are going to mess it up.

You can probably catch it on hulu.com. A lot of other NBC shows are on there, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's on there too. In fact, I just checked. You can watch it here.

I liked it, though I thought the first episode tried to cram 2 hours worth of material into an hour and suffered for it. The show's writing also had some...well...bad moments. But I've been interested and will continue to be interested unless they thoroughly mess it up. A poor man's Batman is still a pretty awesome hero in my book.

He actually seems more inspired by The Shadow than Batman, what with the theatrical mind-games.

The bad thing about that is, it was really two eps that they cram so much material in.

I wish they just had made the Plot ep two hours and taken their time and then aired the ep call tarrot this Monday.

This definitely has some promise, but it gets weighed down a bit by rapid fire cliches.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the Cape, but at the same time some parts of it made me sigh. For example, how the Cape instantly finds and teams up with Orwell who just happens to have a vast amount of high tech computer equipment. In addition, we could obviously see that the private police corporation was bad news. We didn't need Orwell to do that lame hack on the main character's computer to explain to him every detail. Also the fight in the kitchen of the restraurant. How many times have we seen this scene in action movies/T.V. shows? And what was with the rapid fire introduction of villians?

That being said, the fight scenes were nice and it was cool to see a superhero actually use his cape as a weapon rather than just wear it as a fashion statement.

This does give me some big Batman vibes.

Haven't watched the second episode yet but the pilot enormously impressed me. The show was well written and well acted. The best part, I think, about the show is that it makes no apologies for being a superhero show. It's not a parody or even just a comedy. It is a true blue cape-sporting superhero show. If it is one thing I am getting sick of it is genre films being turned into comedies. Like instead of putting out a new superhero movie you make a parody that makes fun of superheroes or instead a new Horror movie you release a new Scary Movie or something to that effect. This show is classic superhero stuff. Over the top villains, a mysterious mentor (played by the awesome Keith David), powers that defy the laws of physics, and even an Oracle type character. (When I say Oracle I am referring to the code name that Barbra Gordan takes up in order to continue helping Batman after she is physically paralyzed by the Joker) The Cape reminds me of the old superhero shows from the 90's such as The Flash, M.A.N.T.I.S., Nightman, etc... It captures the charm and fun that these shows had. It also does a good job of placating to comic book geeks by making comic book references and putting fan-favorite actress Summer Glau in the show. I look forward to future episodes and hope that the show keeps the same charm as the pilot.

Well, so far, this is an interesting show. Monday's show was good [spoiler] I was curious how long it would take before the Carnival of Crime would show their true colors and start committing crimes.[/spoiler]
Also, I'm real curious about Orwell's origins. I'm predicting that she's Peter's daughter.
