Is anyone else watching this show? It's pretty fantastic.
Official Website
The first episode was great. It really managed to be it's own thing while staying entirely true to the spirit of the comics. I really enjoyed the ways that it focused on the emotional elements at play, as opposed to taking the easy route and focusing on the action and gore.
So what are your thoughts?

I was intrigued by it. Especially, as you say, because it focused on the emotional aspects. Like when the deputy caught up with the zombie without legs and put it out of its misery, for instance. You actually felt pretty darn sorry for the thing.
Unfortunately, the audio track was about two seconds later than the video for me. That kind of drained the tension out of things.
One question, though: how did the main character survive in the hospital for a month, in a coma, without water (or without his fingernails growing for that matter)? Remember, the black guy (didn't catch his name with the audio so messed up) said that the hot water had been out for a month, so I assume that was how long it had been since the outbreak.

Maybe some of the hospital staff was there for some of that time. That corpse in the hallway my have been a nurse that was taking care of him.
I thought it was very well done. It really felt like watching a movie instead of a TV show. Like they said it would in their promos. In a lot of places I was like "HOLY CRAP!!".

Anyone else read the comic? I have the first hard cover and was SO happy to hear it was being adapted for TV! X3

I'll check the comic and get back to you.
Also, here is a rockin' fan made opening credits from a while back containing pieces from the comic.

I actually didn't know it was even adapted from a comic. Maybe I will have to go check it out if I miss an episode or two.

Cheers.
If they don't use this as the official television opening, they are stupid.

My guess is that he was only unattended in that hospital for about 2 weeks. There isn't much to base this on other than that the flowers aren't completely brown when he does wake up, and that two weeks is about how long a healthy person in moderate weather would be able to survive without water.

The father and son are Morgan and Duane. The comic says, "The media shut down after a few weeks". From that, it can be concluded that society didn't collapse immediately. Even given the difference between the comic and the show, one can imagine that different parts of the infrastructure fell at different times, and the hospital held out like a fort with its own generators and such for a time.

Okay, that makes sense. It did seem like a lot of wounded were brought there after the outbreak, as if it had been a source of refuge. Also, the military were there protecting it for a while.
The non coagulated blood in the hallway might be pushing it, timeline wise, and the fact that his fingernails had been recently trimmed seems implausible given that the nurse's attentions would have been towards the more critically wounded, but I guess I can let those slide.

I know! I caught that! Red blood no less! No oxidation! And a gooey carcass in the hallway. Maybe they were trying to doubly imply a recent evacuation of the hospital.
Oh, well. How many people would have known that? The suspension of disbelief has to take over with extra force at times.

This may be a knee jerk reaction but...
This is the best show on television now.
It really could have been a movie. The actors were great and it was true horror. Not just spring loaded cats.
The characters seem real, and the zombies are almost a MacGuffin to reveal how people adapt to the new world around them. Brilliant.

Okay, episode two:
1. What was up with the base camp couple? They claim to be barely surviving, day to day, and have spent the last month exhausted and starving. They don't even have enough time to put up a road sign warning people away from dangerous areas, thereby indirectly taking the lives of people heading into the city, searching for the last bit of hope for humanity. In short, they murdered others to save their own skin. Knowing this, what do they do? Run into the forest for a tryst, of course.
Sorry but that doesn't make sense psychologically or physiologically (libido is one of the first things to go when you are hungry and tired). Major negative points for that bit of Hollywood fanservice.
2. Holy cow, gore. I would have been very disappointed by this, except for when the sheriff goes through the dead zombies pockets and finds the card that says he is an organ donor. That part really hit home, and gave that entire scene meaning beyond just "moar zombie gore".
3. I liked the way the doping, power tripping, obnoxious white guy was handled. People like him tend to be trouble in post-apocalyptic stories, so to see him get put into place in such short order was very satisfying. Also, he isn't dead. When the black guy dropped the key, he kicked the tool bucket towards the white guy. The white guy will be protected from the zombies by the chained door, and will hacksaw his way free. No idea what he will do after that, but they definitely didn't kill him off (unfortunately).
4. The very last scene was so awesome. "Where is the Asian dude?" *cuts to him speeding down the highway in the Mustang*.

I agree. That part made me feel really akward; It seemed to go on longer than was even remotely necessary, in my opinion.
Apart from the above, I thought episode 2 was OK. It took me a while to get interested... and then shortly after it did finally rope me in, it ended
.
Bring on episode 3 at any rate. I'm still interested enough in the show to keep watching... for now.

Ugh, but people still having sex is mentioned in the comic as part of a "life goes on" kind of thing. The zombies won't be going away, so surviving is also co-existing. It makes sense, but the show jumped in a little soon.
The whole department store bit isn't in the comic. Maybe the producers were worried the more suspenseful, atmospheric approach of the comic, only punctuated with terror, might not have been enough to hook people. Good news is, the series has already been renewed for more seasons.

Oh...and did anyone notice in one of the recent episodes that when their RV broke down and at the same time Jim said he wanted to be left behind, the RV mysteriously repaired itself after they set him down by the tree?

So how did everyone enjoy that first season?
Personally, I wasn't completely sure I liked the show until that finale. Now, I am certain. While the show does drift into the melodramatic at times, and does seem to overplay its hand, so to speak, it is an intriguing, thoughtful show. The zombies aren't really what this show is about. It is about humans in high-stress situations, and about watching them crumble or stand strong, depending upon their strength of character and ideology.
Biggest fault? It isn't accurate. Not physiologically, not biologically, not in its weaponry, and not in its plot (as evidenced below). Frankly, no one bleeds that much.
On a whole, it is solid and interesting.... I just hope the creators don't go through quite so much trouble to wring out every last ounce of melodrama from each and every situation. Also, a little tidying up of the plot and fact checking certainly wouldn't hurt. I look forward to the next season.

I caught that too.
I enjoyed the first season. It's not my favorite show in the world, but the fact that I took the time to watch it all when I can't really watch anything as it comes on tv has to mean something. I'm definitely interested in seeing the 2nd season and in reading the comics now.

Wow this fell to far. I am four episodes into the first season. It seems very similar to 28 days later.

You just started watching it!!!!!!!???!??!
I watched it all when it premiered. It was so awesome! I can't wait for season 2.
I'm surprised your on episode 4 and still saying it is like 28 Days Later. It kind of lost that vibe after episode 2 for me.

Yes i am just watching it, mostly because lack of cable. I am watching it on Blu-ray. As far as why it feels like 28 days later is, its a story about survival and the characters going through it. Where as most modern Zombie films, minus 28 days later, and Dairy of the dead are either comedies or a mindless action horror hybrid. It focuses of characters instead of in your face scares and gore, granted they are still there just less so then most modern horror. Gore has reason, from the shocking gore sequence in episode 2 to the splashing of gore from gunshots or wounds. It never feels forced, it is just the consequence of the action being taken

That is what is awesome about the movie. Robert Kirkman (writer of the comic book) once said "I didn't make a Horror comic I made a comic about people that happens to be in this horror setting." (I'm paraphrasing a bit there) but I think the show really captures that just as well as the comic. The gore is just icing on the cake.
It is nice because the way the censors work with AMC is that they can't use F-words or have nudity but they can have as much gore as they want. So it is pretty cool.

I waited until it was on Bluray before I started watching. The show is absolutely fabulous. Stinks that S1 was only 6 episodes long. Very excited about the start of S2 this Halloween.

I am so excited about season 2. Two great things about it: It won't be on Sunday so it will be easier to watch and 2 it will be a full 13 episode long season!
