Some quotes on the plot.

When Smurfs 3D was coming together in pre-production, producer said Jordan Kerner did say the story of Gargamel will be explored: "What his backstory really was. There's an all-powerful wizard... there's all sorts of things that get revealed as we go along."

Kerner also mentioned some sort of strange connection to Lord of the Rings, "the animated Lord of the Rings - through the world of these idiots. Because they're sweet characters but they're goofs. It's a comic version, but still very heartfelt, version of Lord of the Rings - though not literally Lord of the Rings, but an epic story like that."

The story is going to be unique. It is neither a sequel or prequel to earlier works.

I am not sure if anyone among you have half as low expectations as I have for this movie.
Of two evils, choose neither - Charles Spurgeon.

Oh man! I can't completely write it off if it's got Neil Patrick Harris in it but I desperately want to. That's a conundrum...

I want to say this looks terrible but...Neil Patrick Harris? Hank Azaria? Kevin James? JONATHAN EFFING WINTERS?

Don't get me wrong guys, I wanna hate this but...that's a lot of good talent. Seriously. A LOT.

It may be a lot of good talent, but that little image that was posted makes me cringe a bit...it looks very sub-par compared to the kind of 3D animation we are seeing more and more of lately.

It kinda reminds me of something from the late 90s....

*shrug* It's a still image, it doesn't show what the animation will look like.

Since there's no official trailer out (that I know of) I don't think we can make judgments on how the animation will look.

When I saw the name of this thread.....I wanted to laugh, and I was thinking "YOU'RE KIDDING ME??? LIVE ACTION SMURFS????" XD!!!!! That's just as bad as the rumors about live action Tsubasa Chronicles (which thank goodness were ONLY rumors!!!). Just like sacred anime should not be touched by live action, so should the smurfs....though I'll probably watch it anyway to see if they kill it or not XD!!!! I might be shocked, but I am iffy on this...

Katy Perry as Smurfette???? No...just....no....

20th Century Boys, Oldboy, and Death Note would like a word with you.
Katy Perry as Smurfette???? No...just....no....

I'm okay with this tentatively, so long as they don't try to make Smurfette into some kind of sex symbol or something, that would just be too weird. Actually I'm hoping that the movie will shy away from sex humor or gross-out humor, we saw what happened when Transformers tried it.

Come to think of it, who's the director for this movie? *checks* Raja Gosnell...hmm...what's he done?
Home Alone 3 (1997)
Never Been Kissed (1999)
Big Momma's House (2000)
Scooby-Doo (2002)
Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (2004)
Yours, Mine and Ours (2005)
Beverly Hills Chihuahua (2008)
The Smurfs (2011)

Well...crap. Now I don't know what to think.

They may be going for a 'claymation/animation' art style kind of like what Ardman and Dreamworks did with 'Flushed Away'

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/9e/RoddyRitaFlushedAway.jpg

or, they haven't put the final polish on it yet.

I'm agreeing with Nate and saying don't knock it till you try it . There are some awesome live-action adaptations out there that I fully endorse :thumb:

But I still am hoping they might go for claymation or something.... That ad looks just odd ><"

This seems interesting, but there is uncertainty about the quality of this film until a trailer is released.

I am so glad I wasn't the only person who saw this thread, said "LOL Live action Smurfs would be dumb," and then saw NPH and said "oh wait maybe not." XDD

Still, I won't go see it. XD I didn't really grow up on The Smurfs, and looking at the rest of the movies this guy directed, I have my doubts. XD Besides, I'm not seeing Marmaduke in spite of the fact that Lee Pace is in it, so I think I'll pass on this one, too. XDD

e.e Ugh, I saw the commercial for this the other day when I went to see Toy Story 3. I was, to say the least, in disbelief they would actually think this was a good idea. I'm going into hiding when the movie comes out, so I don't have to hear anything about it. I just want to wipe it's existence from my mind x.x

I saw the ad for that also before TS3. I was all like "Oh my gosh....it's actually real!!!" and my brother told me, he was like "They're really going to do it???" Yeah, basically, out response: YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!!
Seeing them hanging onto the thing atop a taxi just.....I know the plot is going to be screwed up....

Wow a Smurfs movie... I can't say I'm really surprised I mean they seem to be taking every series ever made in the history of the world, and turning them into live action versions...

But wow...

There are several live action adaptions of different anime in Japan, however they are made by the same people who make the anime, and by the same companies, so they turn out good, like Death Note, and Saikano, and Gegege no Kitaro...

But then... we have American produced ones like Dragonball Evolution, and I hear that James Cameron wants to make a Battle Angel Alita film.
And I also heard they are making an Akira movie, and Ghost in the Shell movie.

You know, they pulled the Akira movie thing with the anime, which really compressed the manga, and the movie suffered for it. WHy haven't they learned theur lesson?!

But also part of the success of the live-action adaptations of anime is that the ones on tv have full-on hour-long episodes and many-episode seasons. It's far longer than a movie, time-wise, which means they can fit more in and have the storyline flow better.

Ha ha what?

Okay maybe everyone else will believe your falsehoods, but I'll prove you wrong right now so nobody else jumps on the "Japan does everything right and America does everything wrong!" bandwagon.

Death Note anime was made by Madhouse. The live-action films were not made by Madhouse...because Madhouse is an animation studio. The producers were Nippon Television and Warner Bros.

Saikano...anime was made by Gonzo. The live-action movie was made by Toei Company.

Gegege no Kitaro anime was made by Toei Animation. Live-action movie was made by Shochiku.

No, the same companies do not produce the anime and the live-action films in Japan, which only makes sense because animation studios make the anime, and animation studios don't make live-action movies.

They're not made by the "same people" either, I'm not sure what that means. The manga-ka do not act as the directors or the producers of the live-action movies. They give feedback, but they do not make the movie.

Just thought I'd clear that up.

Now that's rude and uncalled for, and falsehoods? :hits_self

Ok sorry I thought the movies were made by the same people, but seriously come on I thought they were when I watched them (I'll pay more attention next time, but they seemed to have many of the same people working on them)

But hey at least the Japanese live action ones still are a bit closer to their source material than ones like Dragonball Evolution, and Speedracer (Ugh!)

After watching ones like Death Note, and Saikano, they are definitely made a lot better by the Japanese producers, than by the American ones, since the people they are making the movies for have obviously already seen the source material, while the American producers just want to pump out something that they think the American audience has never seen before.
And anime itself you can see that the Japanese put a lot more love and thought into it than the american ones who just want to make a quick buck off of a bunch of kids. :bang:

Also as you said the original mangaka give a lot more feedback, that's mostly what I mean by "made by the same people" with the American adaptions it might as well, be the complete oolar opposite of what the Mangaka intended.
If God is your "co-pilot" then you need to switch seats.
