I watched this a number of days ago, and I loved it. I thought it was pretty reminiscent of Mirrormask, which I thought was cool. I need to track down a copy of the novel at some point; I'd love to read it!

When you watch both films back to back, it's like watching the same girl grow up with her family with only minor tweaks. This I attribute to the shared authorship of Neil Gaiman, and would speculate that it is reflective of of his personal life.

His books all share a single theme of "other worlds accesible from our own," but I would posit that his childrens works have an additional theme of mutual adjustment by families. The kids need to learn to accept their parents, and the parents their children.

The exception to this would be the Graveyard Book, which kind of had the theme, but altered it by

[spoiler]the fact that Bod had to leave his family when he grew up. He accepted them all along, and in the end he lost them.[/spoiler]

*ahem* Back to Coraline, has anyone read the graphic novel version? I found the Other Mother creepier in the GN because she was drawn realistically and had those horribly cartoony button eyes, as opposed to the one in the movie, who already looked cartoony anyway. I also liked the mother's real hand and not the metal skeleton one. But I did like how the movie had that whole button motif going on in the Other world, like during the lunar eclipse.

Keith David was perfect for the cat.

Yes, the graphic novel is great. I actually enjoyed it more than the novel (the story and characters seemed to be better developed). I thought the Other Mother was slightly creepier in the graphic novel but I do like her metal skeleton hand in the movie.

I didn't even know there was an actual graphic novel. I bought the book years ago but didn't know there was a graphic novel too or I would have got that instead. I'll have to find that.

I did the same with Stardust.... I bought the book before the movie came out and then I later discovered there was also a graphic novel version >.>

The graphic novel came out after the book and before the movie. So if you bought the book years ago then the graphic novel wasn't out yet. It was only released last year.

I finally watched it, and loved it. The button eclipse and the unweaving of Other World was genius.

Zyborg, I struggle with lust and there is no way the near naked woman in this will make you lust, at all. If you do, I'd be very, very concerned.

Can I say that I'd be more worried about the mental scarring rather than the lust? I'd normally say this without hesitation, but we've moved on from that topic. For some reason, I feel I need to explain myself here. I'd say something about the rest of the movie to make up for it if I had anything to say about it.
