TV Turnover: Casting changes all at one time

Postby Sakaki Onsei » Mon Aug 18, 2008 10:17 pm

Some of TV's most popular and longest running shows are getting upturned on casting all at once. Here are a sample of those who are in and out:

Law & Order: SVU -> Out: Diane Neal; In: Michaela McManus (One Tree Hill)
Law & Order: CI -> Out: Chris Noth; In: Jeff Goldblum
CSI -> Out: William Petersen, Jorja Fox, Gary Dourdan; IN: Lawrence Fishburne, Lauren Lee Smith, <insert potential replacement for Dourdan here>

So far, there are 4 replacements with a fifth one on the way. The question I pose is: How do you think these new people will do in replacing really established characters. I'll give an example:

On L&O: CI, Chris Noth's character of Mike Logan was a hit with those who loves L&O back in the day, and thought this guy was good. How will Jeff Goldblum, a guy who is more in line with Vincent D'Onofrio's portrayal of Det. Goren than with the hard-nosed Logan, he fit in? Do you think he'll last a season or more?

Also, what's going on with the former film bigwigs all of a sudden invading TV screens?

Something to think about.

I guess actors are taking small screen jobs because they can't find anything on the big screen? Maybe the TV execs think that if more big names are on TV shows that more people will watch?

Consider ER. How many actors have been changed on that show.
What about a TV show where the whole cast changed when the show changed networks.
Airwolf.

UGH! Though that wasn't as much a change in networks as a change in Countries. Airwolf 4th season was entirely filmed in Canada, because the special effects were so expensive in the USA.
