Tintin comes to the Bigscreen

Postby bigsleepj » Thu Mar 08, 2007 10:47 pm

I know we have a few Tintin fans in here, so here are two articles informing us that Spielberg will be producing (not directing) a Tintin movie. It's not sure if it is going to be live-action or animation, according to the article.

Any thoughts, anyone?

Yeah, I was going to post this first (I know big surprise). lol

I think it's awesome news! I remember hearing rumours of a Tintin movie since 1998 and I've been waiting that long. It's about time, isn't it?
Moulinsart is going to make sure its 'by the book' which is good. I just wonder why they need $100 million US, that's a heap of money.
It will probably be rated PG (G wouldn't work).

Can't wait!

Because in Hollywood they believe that if you don't spend at least a $100 000 000 on a movie people wont bother to consider it worth seeing. Just kidding.

I'd like to see an animated Tintin movie, either traditional style (my preference) or a 3D CGI animation (also prefered). A live-action move, for some reason, makes me skeptical (even if it has been done before). I think I'll just end up being distracted by the actors trying to play the characters (I heard at one point they wanted Tom Hanks for Captain Haddock though that was probably a rumour). Also, if it is a live-action movie, to cut costs they'll most likely set the movie in the 21st century and have Tintin walk around with a cell-phone and an iPod which is sort of a scary thought. With an animated movie they'll be less tempted to relegate it to the present. The world of Tintin always struck me (due to the time the stories were drawn in and the revisions by the author at later date) as being somewhat stuck between different time periods from the late 1920s to the early 1960s (the Blue Lotus especially had an important pre-WW2 theme that might get lost). I'd hate the movies to loose that feel.

I suppose they'll most likely begin with Tintin in America, although I think Cigars of the Pharoes would be a good starting point.

Edit: They might also begin with Tintin in the Land of the Soviets, though they might skip that and Tintin in the Congo since Hergé more or less disowned the two graphic novels and because they are less known.

I think they may go with the any of the double albums. My first thought was The Seven Crystal Balls/Prisoners of the Sun, but then Cigars of the Pharaoh/The Blue Lotus would go very well also. They'll more likely do The Secret of the Unicorn/Red Rackham's Treasure though.

I would also like them to stay within the confines of the late 20s to mid 60s (preferably upto the late 40s - love those ones).

I've heard rumours of live-action and CGI animation. At the moment it's more likely to be 3D CGI from what I've heard, but it's still not concrete.

*So happy!*

Check my avatar for Tintin (you've never heard of him? You guys are so deprived! lol He's essentially a young man who's a reporter/detective who solves crimes and has adventures around the world. It's primarily for kids but unlike most stuff is actually not dumbed down for them.

Yes, I believe it will come to the US as Steven Speilberg is involved.

I think they should keep The Seven Crystal Balls and Prisoners of the Sun for when the series is well established cinematically. Otherwise people might think it's more horror / creepy orientated. We'll just have to see what the filmmakers do. I just hope Spielberg gets a decent director.

Tintin has always been published in the US, but has never quite been as popular there as he has been in the rest of the world. He's a Belgium comic book character that predates the Superman and Batman, but helped popularized the art of comic books and graphic novels. Tintin is a reporter who travels the world and solve crimes and have many adventures.

And since Steven Spielberg is behind it, then it's a definite "Yes" that it's coming to the US.

Here's the Wikipedia article.

I remember Tintin... From HBO, the animated show I mean. I remember the whole space thing. I hope they keep this in the 20's, keep the science outdated, and generally keep the feel of it... Of course, I never read the comics, only the cartoon, so I don't know how faithful the cartoon was to begin with (I didn't realize, for insance, the live action Ninja Turtles were closer to the comics than the cartoons were)

Speaking of the tomatometer, I checked out their bottom 100, and 2 movies I like are on that list!

EDIT: I think that "speaking of the tomatometer" was meant for another thread, possibly on another forum... Oops...

The Tintin series from the late 80s and early 1990s was very faithful to the series (although Captain Haddock's alcohol related problems and smoking were sadly omitted).

This movie looks good. I hope that I'll be able to see it in theater. I think that Bigsleep is right when he says that live action wouldn't work as well. I personally want to see close to the same style of cartoon as the original comics.

The only live action anime/toon based movie I know of currently on the drawing board is Speed Racer.

I don't know whether to be happy or sad about this. I grew up with Tintin and his friends, and I still love them. However, I've seen so many of my favorite stories ruined that I'm pretty suspicious of any attempt to adapt them.

I'd better watch out for this one.

And oh, have I mentioned that Tintin was my first real comic/cartoon obsession before anime and manga came along?

The iconic cowlick comes to the big screen? Fine with me.

I've read through some Tintin, and it's solid stuff, though personally I grew up on Asterix.

Yeah. I practically devoured all the volumes that were in the library of my elementary school. I'd buy some if only the books' present prices in our bookstores here aren't so....hideous

Update on the Tintin movie: Both Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson will direct a movie in a three picture deal.

Hoo-hah!

Spielberg goes Jackson

Not yet. Hopefully it wont be Uwe Boll. Or John McTierman.

I'm fairly certain no one in film so much as wants to touch what's left of Uwe Boll's career, doubly so if they can hire talent like Spielberg and Jackson.

Three films for this? Goodness. I love Tintin, but the more I go into this it seems they're trying to make a live-action film from this. And while there have been times when live-action films have very rarely done well to the comic or animation, this wouldn't really work well with me if it was. Preferably because I love animation more and a tradition styled one without the help of computers would be a dream come true for me.

I have faith that they might do a good job but, something about it makes me feel skeptical.
