Link and merge this if it's been said before....

Who here runs windows and who runs a Mac or Linux?
No arguments over which is better, just who runs what?
Thanks!

Strangely, I can't find one in the recent past where it was explicitly asked like that. *shrugs* So I guess we'll go with this one. :)

Huh. I have to click all of them. In fact, I could ad a few OS's to that list.

Let's see, homer is running HPUX, the woz is running GSos (for now), this little cutie is running newton OS...

*wanders off to count OSs*

I run Windows XP but I prefer the open interface of SUSE Linux...too bad Red Hat got bought out. I am not too familar with Mac, all I know is from a graphic standpoint it is prefered. I also like using Novell, for it's unique IPX/SPX protocols but then again Unix offers that save very non-proprietory TCP.

WindowsXP all the way. that might be because of my bad experience with usings macs in school that were like 30 years old.

I run Windows and Linux. Windows 2000 to be exact (XP's too resource hungry) and Slackware/Debian for Linux. Debian when I feel like doing lots of configuration, and Slackware when I feel like slacking off.

I should try Mac and BSD. I heard good things about Mac, but I won't be using it for a long time due to my nature of playing weirdly incompatible games and figuring out HL doesn't work on a Mac.

Most of my terminals are either on Win 98 or XP. I wouldn't mind Linux, but I am afraid I do not really like using Macs.

I use both mac and windows and am happy.

I've tried Linux and understand a good portion of how to use the OS and terminal, but I'd rather use the other two choices because they are just...*wonders how to say this without getting flamed*....better

Oh, by pc, I mean a non-Mac device operationally controlled by the commercial domination of microsoft.

PC all teh way... No, PC 3/4 of the way, Mac like one one-hundredths of the way... If that doesn't add up, well that's perfectly normal. So, yeah...

Actually, I like all windows from 95 on better than the Mac OS 9.? I was forced to use for a semester in Computer Illustration. I haven't tried Linux (Only seen it in operation once in real life, and a few times on TV) or OSX.whatever.

With all the weird things about Mac OS9.? if OSX.? is even close, I forsee major headache if I am forced to use it... I mean, come on... Changing the function of the word processing buttons... That's the worst thing you can do to someone whose keyboard is his lifeblood... To run a mac, I'd almost be required to run a windows machine too... Yeah, it's not gonna happen unless I get one for free...

Bob, you keep ranting and raving about OS 9, which makes about as much sense as one of us Macheads screaming that Windows 3.1 is lousy and buggy. OS 9 was phased out several years ago, and only remains on modern Macs for the few of us (like myself) that use it for legacy applications, and the rest of the time in emulation under Classic. Apple doesn't even distribute it with new Macs; you have to go buy 9.2.2 from them separately!

Myself, I actually *do* like OS 9, but regardless, it's not a fair comparison.

As for me, I use 2000 and XP (unfortunately) daily, so in contrast, I *do* know my enemy.

I name all my computers too, actually. The names aren't very original, just wk2000# for the WinPCs, linux# for the linux PCs, and constellation names (eg. cancer) for the workstations. Naming computers is absolutely essential if you want a network to run properly. (In fact, I don't know of an OS which allows you to go without a hostname and have network capabilities, but I don't know that many OS')

And as for my workstation, I use XP, but I have to turn down hardware acceleration because it crashes everytime I try to drag-select...my card may be defective. Or maybe I just need to format O_o

So do I. All of them have names, but I'll just post only the ones on the network:

bryan (dual 1.25GHz G4 Power Mac -- my main computer)
andrew (IIci workstation)
andy (IIsi workstation)
alex (486DX4/133 games PC)
benji (Power Mac 1400+G3/333 laptop)
gordon (486DX/40 utility laptop)
gutenberg (Lantronix EPS4+1 printer server)
bil (Commodore 128D connected with a Lantronix UDS-10 Ethernet-serial converter)
sadie (Sega Dreamcast with a Broadband Adapter)
nathan (Pentium 120, not working yet -- figures ^^ )
currier (Apple LaserWriter 16/600 PS)
carl (Power Mac 7100+G3/233)

And the servers:

thule (Mac IIci, 25MHz '030, running NetBSD as my DNS, AppleShare and printer server)
(reykjavik, Solbourne SPARC server -- dead at the moment)
helsinki (used to be jonathan, my old Power Mac 7300+G3/500, repaired and reincarnated as a NetBSD-based database and gopher server)
rintintin (PowerBook 540c, 33MHz LC040, running NetBSD as a mobile server)
oslo (G4/450, running OS X Panther with 220GB online for network backups)
godthaab (Quadra 605, 25MHz full 68040, running NetBSD as my RTSP, PNA and HTTP proxy)

and finally stockholm, the master web/mail/DNS and proxy system, an Apple Network Server 500 (200MHz 604e).

Naming is fun. :)

I personally don't have a big problem with either system. The Macs that I use have some serious issues with cookies, but that isn't the OS's fault. If Macs had a task bar I would probably use them far more often.

I'm running Gentoo Linux and XP for those pesky peripherals that don't like Linux.

In OS X, the Dock at the bottom of the screen has some features like that of the Windows task bar. In fairness, the Dock steals a lot from Win95's task bar idea, so Apple doesn't come up with *all* their own concepts. ^^

95 has been "phased out" for about as long. They haven't sold 95 with new systems since 98, just as they haven't sold 98 with new systems since 2000 (when ME came out...) and so on. Also, while 95 and 98 are almost identical, 95 hasn't been supported since probably 2000 and 98 hasn't been supported for a while either. It is an entirely fair comparison to put 95 against 9.2.2. It makes perfect sense. Those were the competitors... I don't think OSX has been around THAT long because I saw the mac show on TechTV when they first released it.

I didnt' see the "don't argue over which is better" thing so I'll get rid of the rest of this and just leave my answer to Shoo.

Perhaps only in an academic sense, but I'll shut up also. By the way, since you asked, the Mac OS X Public Beta was released 13 September 2000, although Mac OS X DP2 "Developer Preview 2", the first appearance of the "modern" Darwin kernel, was released back in fall/winter 1999 (the kernel datestamp says October 25th).

*looks back through thread* How did I end up not replying to this thread? Usually I'm one of the first ones to do so! My memory must be going on me...

I use MS-DOS and Windows of many different flavors, but I can't tell if any of them are better or worse than other OSes because that's all I've ever used. (But that's beside the point of this thread anyway. ^_~ )

I think I mentioned already once somewhere else that I took my newest computer which had only XP on it and turned it into a 98SE/XP dual-boot system by installing a second hard drive; switching OSes is a simple matter of changing the boot device in the BIOS. Some of the programs I use don't work properly under XP, but at the same time, other programs I use don't work properly under 98, so I find myself switching back and forth on a regular basis. But it all does the job I need it to. :thumb:

Ah, docking bar. That's all I really wanted, anyway. It's helpful for keeping track of seven or so windows. But if you have a G5 you might as well just have them all on screen at once.

I'm glad all of this resolved nicely. It's always strange now involved people can become discussing OS opinions.

I say forget mac, windows, and linux and let's all just go back to Apple II. Gotta love the onion man illustrated storytelling program... Just type your text, pick a picture, and enjoy it in all of it's 7 bit, monochrome glory. Ah, the good old days... I still remember form fed printers and the broderbund word processor. And Applesoft BASIC. And those incredibly loud disk drives and lack of harddrive, GUI, and mouse. Oh, and the Newspaper thing that I used for my bookreports because I liked padding them with clip art, hehehe.

EDIT: Oh, I know what that cartoon is too... I saw that when I was looking for parodies of those rediculous Mac commercials (the "I love my Mac" ones) Needless to say, not only was it tasteless, but it didn't really follow the format of the commercials it was supposed to be making fun of, and there are better ones at http://www.ubergeek.tv under animation section. ONe fore mac, one for linux.

That particular URL references a gay porn site in the animation -- don't post that here, please.
