Should I get Vista?

Hey there guys,

Its been ages since I last posted anything here, but this is really one of the few places I can post and get a real response.

I am currently running on XP64, and while the issues are few, the ones I have been running into are quite annoying (EX: updating to the most current version of iTunes is taking a chance with my playlists and settings...).

I am wondering if Vista is a more stable platform, or if I may as well just stay where I am, because Vista would have just as many, if not more, annoying issues.

From the reviews I have seen, Vista is still not the stable draw that people are expecting. On the plus side, you can get rid of some of your annoyances! On the minus side, you get an entirely new set in exchange. The bottom line is, you probably will not enjoy the upgrade yet.

If I were you, I would wait at least another year. Maybe two.

I'd suggest to consider getting Vista if/when you get a new computer rather than now.

To be fair, it does have its share of niceties above XP, but if you're expecting it to be more stable, I'd wait for a bit.

How is this for a statement on Vista? I've recently heard a rumor going around that Microsoft has either started or is considering offering a free downgrade to XP for those who have legitimately purchased Vista.

Well, I'm not going to get into the computer wars. But from what I've read and experienced, no. You're best staying with XP right now.

Hmmm, currently moveing from XP to Vista might be a bit too pricey. If anything either Vista Home premium or ulimate is the choice that I would favor. Basic is not much to jump up and down about. In terms of multimedia much has been improved in Vista, however it feels more like a fresher codeing of windows XP than anything, but then again windows XP is pretty much the same as a fresher codeing of windows 2000.

There are two service packages that are about to be released. The first one will rather than press down the accelerator remove the brakes. Meaning that some of the bugs and such will be fixed. The second one I don't have much info on.

If you are looking for eye candy then Vista got alot of that. The overall design is improved quite a bit. Security is also improved. And with Vista ulimate one could make quite a bit of use of the bitlocker function.

If you are looking for the newer games then you really don't have much of a choice seeing that Direct X 10 seems Vista exclusive. At least to my knowlegde.

You should also see if your computer is powerful enough to run Vista. If you have a slow computer the OS will slow it even more down. However if you got a fairly powerful computer then the OS will work even better.

Also if you want the Vista 64 bit version then you have to go for Vista ulimate. You can also get the 32 bit version which has more drivers, but 64 bit is highly likely to become more used and also get more drivers.

You should also check if your computer is ready to be upgraded to Vista ulimate. Visit the microsoft homepage to download the program which checks if it is ready to be upgraded, and warns you if some potential programs will be lost.

One of the cool features which comes with buisness and ulimate is the virtual machine function. With it one could install other OS's if one prefeers that. *You will need a copy of the OS in question, at least to my knowlegde*. I have never tried it, but reports says that it works well.

My conclution would be to the price drops and to the flaws is straightened out if you want to upgrade to windows Vista. However if you do want to upgrade right away then here are a few tips.

- Have an external hardrive to keep your files safe on. *Meaning copy and transfer them*
- Have someone who has installed windows vista and in short knows what they are doing.
- If your computer is old, then instead of upgradeing it I would consider to buy a new pc with Vista already installed. *If you are into mac's then the new Imac runs Vista ulimate without any problems at least according to PC Pro*.

Vista is defidently an upgrade from windows XP, but a tad too pricey and hopefuly the new service packs will add features as well as remove the flaws. If you are somewhat limited to your buget then Vista home premium might be the choice to make. If money is not that much of an issue then I would go for ulimate. Either way, waiting might be the best option for now.

Vista = evil. And that's what I've learned^^ Too bad when people come in to buy Halo 2 for PC at work I have to let them know it's Vista only... and then remains on the shelf :/ Definitely not good for games, only those specific ones^^

Why pay $$$ so that Microsoft can own your Computer.

I have read to much about built in DRM and other lovely features.

Not only that but you need a gaming class computer to use it to its full potential. Not right.

My recommendation, wait a month or two and get a Mac with Leopard.

... I didn't want to be the first person to say Linux in this thread, but yeah. I bought a laptop this past thursday that came with Vista, and the first thing I did was put in a Gentoo (Linux) installation DVD.
