avi. files play slowly.

This has gotten to be a really annoying problem.

None of my video files have been playing at normal speed! They're mostly avi files if that's any help.

I've tried reinstalling DirectX. They still play slowly. The only solution is to restart the computer and play the movies right when the computer has started back up. I haven't tried doing this after I reinstalled DirectX.

ATI Radeon 9250 (overclocked)
2.0ghz sempron
512mb ram

If anyone here can help me, I'd appreciate it very much.

What program are you using to play them? If you're using windows media player, I'd recommend just about anything else. It sounds to me like the system is having to work really hard on whatever it's doing. But if it works Ok for a while after a reboot, the problem usually ends up being not enough RAM.

I'm not in the market for a new video player - I ususally use VLC. Anyone else have a good video player that does many formats? I'd say start there. If you still have problems, you may wanna think about more RAM.

I use winamp myself, but I have to admit I had to do a lot of tweaking to get it working like I wanted to. There are more powerful programs than Winamp, but I just enjoy it because it's gotten to the point that it's so customized that it has done exactly what I needed. I've also used VLC in the past, and I agree that it's excellent as well as an all-around media player.

Well.. thing is, it never used to do this before. This just started not too long ago and I've always used WMP... *sigh* idk.

I just tried watching a movie with Nero Showtime. It works perfectly with that...

I've heard of VLC too. I'll give it a shot.

But, why would Windows Media Player suddenly start messing up like this...?

In my experience? Two words: Planned Obsolescence.
