dvd temp files problem

My friend is having trouble with his DVD-RW drive. He can't get the temporary files to delete from the window. he has tried clicking remove temporary files and it would not work. he removed the drive from the hardware profile and let windows redetect it. and it didn't do anything. It doesn't read discs either. He is using windows xp home edition. It's been like this for a while. Any advice?
